TURKEY TO BRISTOL on a 1994 TRIUMPH Thunderbird 900 Day 5:
It was nice to wake up in a farm house in Florence, thanks Ed and Fiammi! Everything here in Italy seems to be stunning. I took a ride up to the local monastery and got told that I wasn't allowed to fly my drone around there. I headed off hoping to get as far as Grenoble, but aware that I might not as I started a little later than normal. I wan't on the road until around 1030am which pushed the day back considerably. It's pretty much dark by around 5pm. I decided to take a trip to Pisa to look at the tower, not much else to do there really - nice tower though.
The road took me through some lovely Italian countryside, past some towns and eventually to Turin where I booked myself into a hotel on the outskirts of town. Typically the restaurant was closed that night so I headed off to the local pizza place. I wasn't disappointed, one of the best I've had.

I had a longer stay in Pisa, in 1971 on my three cylinder triumph. I managed to get to the campsite near the tower, My trident had a hole in the centre piston and both valves were burnt. I had to strip the engine down on the campsite. After finding out what i needed, I had to walk into town and find the telicom office book a call to my place of work, Because I didn't know anyone with a phone, Then I had to sit down until they called me, you couldn't just make a call. I got hold of a workmate, Who then got parts, had them sent to pisa airport, When they eventually arrived, I had to walk to the airport and back Rebuild the engine on the campsite before I could continue my travels. Getting the valve springs down so I could fit the collects in without a valve springs compressor, Was the hardest job, I will never forget the cutts and pain. Happy days 😂

Mate that is a real bike touring story, love it. That trip turned out very different than expected, but what an adventure. That was back when the standard bike manuals had instructions on how to check your valve clearances! Amazing.

Oh..., you're not alone with not knowing about Pisa tower being open to the public, neither did I. Some really nice (messy) country roads in this offering, especially for that time of year, but I guess you've got the bad weather still ahead of you. Great choice of music on this one, sets the tone well for taking in the scenery better. (actually your music has always been good, but this time particullary good). You seem to be a better man thanI, I hate motorways. 🧤👍

Cheers mate. Yea it was a bit different coming though Tuscany, really lovely, but some tricky roads for sure. Music is actually a really challenging part of the edit. Not always easy, but I do lean towards a bit of feel-good funk, that always seems to win. Weather wise I did have some challenges for the last couple of days, but I almost dodged it...

Haha. Yes, I did talk to someone about that pizza, the one from Brindisi. Apparently a very traditional pizza in Italy. Nearly put me off pizza forever though!

Great ride Matt, the road up to the Monastery was bad and slippery though… but you handled it perfectly… that bike is a real piece of work… still on my list 😊👍

These Thunderbirds are really quite something. Never even considered them before, don't know why, just kind of walked past them without thinking. Probably the best bike I've had to be honest. A bit brutal in some regards, but a 30 year old bike that covers 6000 miles without fault has got to be a good one right? What's even better is that I could rode 500+ miles without aching at all. The bike seems to be ergonomically perfect for me. I am a short arse though.

It's that time of the year. We go out to the garage and look at our bikes and sit on them for a few minutes, dreaming of the open road and willing the rain/snow to stop. Thanks my friend.

700km a day is pretty huge too. Those long distances are not my choice really, nice to know you can handle them though. The pizza was amazing!

4-5 hours is ideal. You get to see loads of the places you visit with half day rides rather than 10-12 hour stints.

Dont you have any need to go a bit outside this boring asphalt? why you driving this road motorcycle? What it give you? Sersious question?I mean drive same ways like everyone else with cars - seems to be boring after 200 km. Just with super google map, easy riding.

There are probably more interesting routes to take for sure, but I was racing against time to avoid some bad weather through Italy and France. Genuinely pained me to be riding past some of the places I could see from the roads, they looked stunning. The exploring will have to happen another time! In defence of the motorways though, there is something I really like about simply munching the miles. I get really bored in a car, but I find the riding really cathartic, I think about stuff that my normal hectic life drowns out with busy-ness. Anyway, dirt roads and some kind of scrambler does sound like a lot of fun. I'll let you know if I get a scrambler (or just rag the thunderbird through them) and you can join me on a few. Stay upright bro, all the best.

Ok i was maybe not specific. My question was about philosophy of riding. Not this particular trip. But you answered me so thank you for that :)@@thebristolthunderbird
