I'm impressed that Wong refused to change his testimony. A far more important person bribed all those corrupt cops.

I was thinking the same thing; he must’ve been a strong character to withstand what he went through. Also, the fact that he returned to work for the Bakers indicates that they believed his innocence.

It wasn’t incompetence. It was very competent tampering of evidence by the murderer and their accomplices.

I don't know if he was guilty or not it's hard to tell with this little bit of information however I think you accidentally made an intense significant double entendre. Many many Chinese workers lost their life building the Canadian railroad they were paid slave wages and many died because of the treacherous conditions of building tracks along steep mountain sides with raging rivers below them.

Settle to Carlisle railway (Yorkshire/Cumbria UK), tunnels viaducts, had many sad losses, Irish navvies - which is NOT a racist term, it comes from the word Navigator - whole shanty towns were built up there near Ribblehead Viaduct. Many died from diseases. May be of interest to you. Good wishes.

Wow. I'm glad Wong's case was thrown out. There was a lot of bias toward Chinese back then. It probably was her boss because he was dealing in illegal stuff 😳

that's what I think. Mr. Baker was doing things that were against the law and Janet probably discovered that. He was naturally worried she'd go to the police and squeal so he got rid of her. But because of him conveniently being away from his residence at the time her death was discovered, he knew he wouldn't likely be considered a possible suspect. Mr. Wong was simply a convenient fall guy as he would have been the only other person at the residence when the murder was discovered, and obviously, the infant wasn't going to be a suspect and because Mr. Wong was the only other person in the home other than the victim herself he was automatically blamed for it while the real fiend got away with murder. The blatant anti-Chinese bias of the time didn't do Mr. Wong any favors either, but good for him that the court saw the falsehood for what it was and threw the case out.

@@riggs20 Italian press does that with pretty much every death that happens in unclear or mysterious circumstances that makes national news: they “latch” onto a person linked (often barely) to the dead and turn him/her into the perpetrator labeling him/her a killer, and go on saying that even after evidence shows there wasn’t a crime to begin with.

The prejudice against immigrants of Chinese background in those days was completely unfounded and terrible. They had already contributed an enormous amount to Canada, including the building of the trans-Canada railroad.

What a sad case! Why wasn’t the first officer investigated? He handled the gun immediately rendering forensic evidence useless (at that time). That SOB was covering for someone.

In 1920ish forensic science was an infant . They had only just discovered finger prints lol You can see detectives, police until 1950s handling guns, bullets, knives, etc with bare hands not realizing they were contaminating the evidence. Not until 1960s, 70s, they started to realize they needed to handle evidence differently to not cross- contaminate BUT also to process with the cutting edge technology.

My guess is J. found out something she shouldn't have and Mr. Baker had a hand in it. Mr.Wong was a scapegoat.

Wong called Baker immediately upon finding the body...would he really have had time to stage her "suicide" and get back to where he was supposed to be that quickly? They lived in an upper class neighborhood...doubtful he had offices that close by. And where was his wife?

I lived in Vancouver. It’s a beautiful city but I think there’s always been a dark side to it including racism and shady characters and drugs. It’s still true. I hate when police botch the investigation like this one. Or was it deliberate? Hopefully now crime scenes are treated much more carefully

That was so interesting. I looked up more on her but the only different thing was that she haunts the Hycroft Mansion and not the Osler House. It's all very strange. It's a miracle Wong wasn't murdered as well.

How sad; because of incorrect investigation techniques initially, we still don't know how Janet Smith died. The lack of proper procedure can make it seem like the responding officer purposely handle the weapon in an attempt to cover evidence. The lack of proper procedure for post mortem examination initially has that same effect. Maybe the police officer was covering for someone. Very intriguing case for today Briefcase. I'm grateful you shared this one with all of us, so Janet Kennedy Smith will not be forgotten to time.

God, I hope 2021 is a better year. Someone told me that if anyone tries to do a year in review they aught to be drawn and quartered, and I think I agree!😂😂

This was a botch up from the start police were trying to pin it on that young man as they were getting blamed for not not saving the evidence. The treat this man appauling no wounder in the end he went back home thank you for your great stories waiting for the next one press the like button everyone as I have done.

That's a sad story of a life cut short - and poor Mr. Wong's ordeal. It reminds one, with the rowdy party story, of the dreadful Fatty Arbuckle case: apparently such things did go on, complete with covers-up.
