Poor Lillie Johnson, here she is thinking that she is going to have a nice carriage ride with a friend just to have it escalate into witnessing a murder. Then if that isn't distressing enough she ends up in jail, charged as an accomplice. I wonder what Lillie thought about what she was going through.

Not necessarily, I was under the impression that they kept any correspondence from Alice from her, as well as forbidding Freda to correspond in return. This wouldn't be unexpected and wouldn't be difficult to manage.
@liandra83

I think they came across the reality of their situation at that time. Freda decided that there was no hope in continuing like they had, and changed her course for one that was possible in society's eyes. Alice again saw no other way forward than with Freda, felt betrayed by her decision to move forward and probably saw no way out for herself.

@@mystic_tacos I think something like a podcast would better fit his style. His voice is clear and easy on the ears, and the visual aspects aren’t a necessity to the story, just filler to occupy space. So a podcast could work very well. I think that’s be a good way to avoid a streaming network from forcing changes or changing the style.

It would have been interesting to have known how Alice and Freda's relationship would have turned out if they would have ended up together. This was a sad and horrific story about a forbidden love and society's moral standpoints of the day, and mental health issues, as well. Great investigation work of this case.

You know, I'm going to guess it wouldn't have been great? The whole "if I can't have you noone can" thing really points to Alice likely being a controlling and abusive partner. Maybe she would have been a better person if society had been more accepting but also, maybe not. Certainly people whose relationships were accepted by society have done that sort of thing in the face of rejection before. My guess? Even with complete societal acceptance, this relationship would have ended in an ugly way.

No difference most probably. There are people nowdays (both straight and homosexual) that don't deal good with refusal or with someone breaking up with them. The problem was Freda refusing to be with her anymore, not the fact that the society didn't approve. It seems that Alice had no idea that Freda broke up due to her family's disapproval. Alice thought that Freda just didn't want to stay with her anymore and that was enough for her to kill Freda.

I'm not sure why Alice thought she needed to dress as a man if they lived in St. Louis. It wasn't at all unusual for two unmarried women to live together -- it was actually considered more respectable than a woman living on her own, since in theory they acted as chaperones for one another. There was even a term for it: Boston Marriage.

@FunSizeSpamberguesa
@FunSizeSpamberguesa 3 жыл бұрын
@@lazyhomebody1356 Some were romantic, some weren't, but to society at large, they seemed completely respectable because so many people (usually men) assumed women were just totally sexless beings unless there was a man involved. @@lazyhomebody1356 It's theorized that James' sister was actually gay, but the term was well-known by then as a platonic one: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_marriage. Once general society started suspecting they could actually be romantic and sexual, they lost respectability. (It's worth noting that the idea of lesbianism really wasn't that well-known to most people in the 19th century; there's a reason laws against homosexuality at the time almost exclusively refer to gay men.)

Merry Christmas to everyone! Another case of love gone wrong. It's not ok to kill someone because you can't have them! That's not real love. These two ladies didn't have much of a chance for their relationship to be a success. If you want to read about another couple of well known ladies that lived around the same time, look up Gertrude Stein and her friend Alice b. Toklas. They didn't kill anyone but they knew many of the famous artists of the time, had quite a fascinating life and beat the odds. There are quite a few books written about Gertrude Stein.

@Nicole Perron - I love Gertrude and Alice's relationship. Sadly, Gertrude's family ended up taking many of the items that Gertrude wanted Alice to have after her death, including many valuable paintings. Alice killed that girl because her family shut down their communication. I’m sure that after Frieda’s sister discovered those letters, her family took swift action to cut the relationship off. Frieda was probably closely watched and monitored with everything being examined and scrutinized. Just because Alice’s mother didn’t seem concerned, it was very clear that Frieda’s family was the complete opposite. She probably never even got a chance to even set eyes on the last letter Alice sent to her. The fact Frieda wasn’t able to understand that the lack of communication was most likely not by Frieda’s choice, and chose to attack her besides say a family member withholding Frieda from her, really led me to believe that she was crazy. Or should I say, driven crazy by what I would call an obsession, not love 😳

What she did to Freda was absolutely wrong and horrific, but Freda clearly wasn't serious about her. She was acting like a simple-minded little girl and ignoring Alice (after accepting her proposal) because some boys were starting to pay attention to her. I think it was just a game or phase to Freda, but it was real to Alice.

Good Morning my fellow casers. This is such a heartbreaking case . Young women .. punished for being themselves in a cruel hateful world . It's baffling and disheartening that there are people who think this was a "better" world. (sigh)

Wait. Who punished whom for being themselves? Sounds like these two had a good plan until Frida met someone else. Alice was lightly punished for killing someone... not because she was gay. Frida was punished for cheating and not ending a relationship properly.
@beautifulcaptive
@beautifulcaptive 3 жыл бұрын
@@scharf74 When they were found out, Frida's family prevented her from having contact with Alice and sent everything Alice sent back to her. The punishment came from Frida's family long before the murder was committed. I'd hazard a guess that Frida wasn't cheating and didn't break off the relationship, she was likely pressed into the relationship with the man as being more "proper" and all contact with Alice was cut off by the family. She was all into the relationship, despite the man until the sister found out and told on her.

8:00 I understand taking care of the victim is the priority....but seriously why did nobody apprehend (or at least tried to) the culprit before she left the scene!? Alice wasn’t even running, she just up and went home normally.

It would have been interesting how the relationship between Alice and Freda developed, outside social constraints. I remember a cousin of mine who was in a socially hidden same-sex relationship and was eventually killed by her partner, however the authorities ruled it as insanity, and this was as late as the early 2000s. I hope murders of this type do not always end up unpunished.

Sad story. Knew from first description of Alice as tomboy she would be lesbian, and once Freida in story knew something bad would happen. Though I though it would be both getting killed by husbands they would be forced into marrying. From description possible Alice was dyslexic and/or had ADD. Unclear if Freida was following family wishes willingly or after threats or even knew whatt they wete doing to seperate them.

Hi Briefcase another great video! You were the first true crime channel I subscribed to. I love the old crime stories, particularly in the Victorian era. Times have changed in the last 120 years or so. My 22 year old niece is transgender and her life choice is accepted by all the family. 'Not of sound mind' if one enters a same sex relationship! Then there was the age old adage, if I can't have you no one else can - jealousy. Well it's getting late her in Australia 11.30 PM December 21st (summer solstice). Keep up the good work and wishing you all the best and happy holiday season

Many, many men kill their girlfriends when the are rejected for the very same reason; if I can’t have them then no one will. No one feels badly for them and tries to excuse their behavior as insanity. Alice sounded as if she were angry and jealous and wanted to punish Freda. There were no other real indications that she was insane.
@Mutilatrix

Straight men who kill their girlfriends over real or imagined betrayals have zero lack of community to fall back on, zero fear of repercussions for expressing straight love, and countless people they could turn to in crisis, unlike this young gay woman , but okay

@@Mutilatrix The fact remains there is really no excuse for killing a significant other. No one should have to fear violence and death because they no longer want to be in a relationship. People of all orientations have been rejected since the beginning of time but absolutely none of them had the right to take someone’s life.

Alice despite being obsessed with Freda Alice is also that type of person that wants things to go on her way and when her plan of getting married with Freda and run away to st Louis to live together didn't go on her way she killed Freda as punishment.. And also killed Freda because both wemon made a pact. this happened when Alice proposed to Freda in three different letters Freda say yes three times so...I don't know why Alice keep asking her the same question 😂😂😂😅 after Freda accepted the third time Alice told her Freda she would only belong to Alice and disloyalty meant death if Freda broke off their engagement Alice promise to kill her and that's exactly what happened Alice felt she had to keep her word. Alice also felt in her mind there was just two choices either they were going to be together or Freda was going to die. So sadly this is another sign that Alice was mentally and emotionally unstable because she have many red flags on her and even threaten to take her own life and even warn Freda about murdering her
