That’s what was so callous about it. It makes you feel less sympathetic towards the perpetrator. “Oh but he was only 14 !” Yes, old enough to know it was a crime. He watched the boy’s movements for weeks, conceived of a plan, and with greed and malice in mind he robbed and murdered him. If he hadn’t been found out just think of the road he would have gone down. He would have been emboldened to do it again and could have racked up quite a body count. The real tragedy is that of little Richard.

Infinite blessings to you for not only giving voice to this poor boy's grisly fate, but for doing so in such a manner that respects and preserves his dignity, honor, and humanity as a boy named Richard Taylor whose life had meaning and who brought so much joy and pride to his family and so many others. He meant so much to his father, and it violently broke my heart upon witnessing the father's discovery of his son's body. It cholked me up and brought me to tears imagining the horrendous grief that poor father undoubtedly suffered while mourning the tragic loss of his beloved son. No parent should have to endure such an unimaginable loss.

I always like BC's presentation of the social conditions of the time of the murder. There is a theory (that I just made up) that the most heinous crimes committed in a country are a reflection of the worst excesses of that country's culture. At the time of this murder, Britain was the wealthiest country in the world, but that wealth was only enjoyed by the kind of people you read about in Jane Austen novels. Among the 'have nots' were the usual domestic behavioural issues - alcohol, marital violence, child abuse and crime. I suspect the Bird Bell brothers copped the full lot. The usual disclaimer applies: no excuse for murder, lots of people have horrible childhoods etc. etc. Young Richard Taylor was also born into the 'have nots' class, but at least he seems to have had a loving family.

I was born in 1961 but for my grandparents and parents as working class people due to poverty, the threat and fear of ending up in a workhouse was very real. Obviously by the 60's workhouses were closed but the fear they engendered remained in psyche of the working class. The fear of childrens homes was still a fear for children from the 50's upwards. Usually they landed there because one parent had died and without family support the other parent couldn't work and take care of their children or both parents had died and no family members could afford or wanted to assume guardianship. I remember even in the 70's children from a children's home were treated differently by teachers, usually in a negative manner No child was unaware of how children from childrens homes were treated. To befriend a child from a children's home in essence ment you were social unacceptable and isolated your from your peers.

My mother was 14 when she started work in 1930s England. Remembering that shows that 14 wasn’t as young back then as it is today. Yes life was tough in the 1830s but John Bird Bell’s actions show a level of extreme wickedness. Bell had observed young Richard for a few weeks which shows that he wasn’t completely desperate for money, if he had been he would have robbed the boy much sooner. It seems that the plan was always to kill Richard, it wasn’t necessary to do that if robbery had been the sole motive. Did Bell confess the details out of conscience or to relive this crime, that can’t be judged and at least he did confess. Poor Richard is the one I feel truly sorry for.

What a handsome boy. Poor soul. 😢 Can’t believe his father waited until morning before going to look for him. The perpetrator deserved hard punishment though am baffled why the judge overruled the jurors decision. Is it not the case that a jurors decision was binding?

Man that was a rough case to hear. Even at 14 they have no concept of finality. Hanging was so harsh. Honestly ending up in a work house at their age would have been harsh enough.

Shocking to know a 14year old boy could be hanged . How sad to think that he murdered another boy for money

I didn't watch this surreal case until Thursday, but that simply means that I only have four days until the next thrilling story!! Lucky me!! We think of evil children killing their exemplary peers as unfathomable horrors only entrenched within the horrid context of Modern Society. But Evil has always plagued Global Society. The dutiful son would have been such an asset to his nation had the teen killer spared his life. I am horrified that the honorable victim lost his valuable life over a small sum of money. But I am extremely thankful that his younger sister did not suffer the same fate as her wonderful brother. Thankfully, the budding serial killer was hung before he had a chance to murder other innocent children. This was a sorrowful story, but the ending renewed my faith in Justice. Thank you, Esteemed Brief Case, for a sad yet sublime narration of this callous crime.

People always like to refer to some mythological time that was “better”, but the world has always been dangerous for certain groups; one such group being children.

Lord have mercy indeed. I wish the judge didn't have him hummed. But gave him the rest of his life prison he clearly did not have the proper upbringing that children should have had him and his brother. But to make you think deeply what was going on at home that these two young men wanted to be murders at such an early age. Just a sad and cruel story all the way😢😢😢
