I'm glad the father was not convicted, as the evidence was all circumstantial and the motive nonexistant. It is still heartbreaking that the murderer was never brought to justice. Rest in peace, dear little William.

It seemed as if this whole family was haunted by tragedy. 3 children dead. The mother fallen apart from losing her children, the failed marriage and hard times. The father hampered by both being accused and also by injury from his heroic act. Seemed as if nothing could go right for the family.

I can’t fathom how Victorian parents coped with death always at their doorstep ready to take their children. Every little cough, earache or digestive issue must have struck fear in their hearts. Losing a child to murder would have been crushing.

I understand that the father would feel the loss of his child but by his own choice he left the family to live apart from them . The reason why I felt it was a tragedy for the mother is because she had the job of caring for him only to lose him to a murderer . No disrespect was intended

Agnes was charged in 1905 with trying to commit suicide by drinking poison. Apparently upset John had spent the night away and wouldn’t tell her where he’d been, she reportedly said “I’ll do something to make him sorry.” At the time she had a year old baby, it died the following year. John’s Army record shows he was given 3 months hard labour in 1909 and again in 1910 for deserting his wife and child and leaving their support to the Parish. Despite this they were living together on the 1911 census in one room. Poor little lad never stood a chance. I’m still inclined to think he was snatched by a stranger though.

I just read an article about Titus, John insisted the £50 reward be held by the Post Office and paid to him £1 per week because his wife liked to drink. From what you stated I'm suspicious of the mother as she sounds quite immature. If she could consider killing herself to be manipulating, it's not a far stretch to kill someone else for the same ends.

I don’t think the father did it, honestly. Plenty of witnesses were able to corroborate his alibi and had nothing to gain by lying for him, and similarly there was something to gain by falsely implicating him. Also doesn’t help that “a dark coat, hat and mustache” were identifying features of the killer when everyone and their dog had a dark coat, hat and mustache in this era. I think it was probably a revenge killing for putting the other man away, especially because (thankfully) it doesn’t seem like there was a sexually driven motive to hurt William. I feel for mum, can’t imagine losing all of my children.

My former Father-in-Law grew up in the Bronx in the 1920s, and I know he delivered groceries from his parents' store from a very early age, and that it was expected of him to do so (he had some hair-raising stories about being chased by other kids who wanted to beat him up because he was Jewish). Perhaps it was the same way in Britain?

I’m 70, and did groceries for my mom from the age of 6. Just like this boy, it were small things I was sent for. And the shops weren’t far away. That was quit normal. And although this boy was murdered, millions of other kids weren’t. The probability of something happening to a child outside is very, very small. Most kids are hurt by people they know.

I remember going to the store too. Once we sent my cousin, she came back with limeade instead of lemonade because she couldn’t read well enough! She was a little too young apparently. I told my son, go ride your bike to the store and get some milk, he said, “This isn’t the 80s.” He won’t go. My mom would send a note so I could buy cigarettes for her when I was 10 😂

I used to go 3 blocks to the store for my Mother at 7 and mowed a yard for $3 and a soda when I was 8. My Grandma sent me down the block to have the neighbor wish my wart away when I was 5 and I walked 2 blocks from Grandma's to Great Grandma's too. She let me stand on an old pan and cook my own rolled oats at 5. I never met a stranger. That was in the early 70's. When you knew all of your neighbors and didn't have to lock your doors.

Good morning or good evening because you’re across the pond but I am in California. It’s always heartbreaking when a child dies because they haven’t had a chance to live life but it’s even harder when they’re killed by someone especially an adult. What’s even worse is when a parent is accused and they actually did it and I’m glad Williams father wasn’t found guilty because witnesses were confused and I believe they were just looking to find anyone and to be honest I really don’t think he did it. Unfortunately we live in a society where people just don’t value human life and will take the life of any age including a child or even a baby. Williams parents lost their children so they lost their world and that you cannot get back. Thank you for another amazing story this one really hit me because I lost my daughter many years ago to a drunk driver. I still call it murder because of the choices that he made when he took her life. Thank you so much for another awesome story and we will look forward to next Monday have a wonderful week Bless 🙏🏽🇬🇧🇵🇭

Really it's a wonder any crimes were solved at all, without confessions. SO MUCH relied on eyewitness memory, which is proven to be the weakest form of evidence and of course people can also lie. To make matters worse, people dressed and styled themselves SO similarly (look at 14:40), and lots of men had up to half their face covered with facial hair and wore hats everywhere, so if one's head were tilted down in the few seconds somebody saw them, they might as well have been wearing ski masks. Just to think of how many victims never received justice, and worse, how many innocent people were wrongfully convicted and punished, even executed, much sooner after conviction than nowadays, and it's not terribly rare that something comes up to exonerate death row inmates. Just imagine knowing you were innocent while having the rope put around your neck with a crowd bellowing disgust at you, knowing you'll be remembered as a killer and your loved ones treated with shame as well. One more reason I roll my eyes when someone talks about the "good old days."
@_SolitaryMan
@_SolitaryMan Жыл бұрын
You're right,the good old days is a myth. They held more morals than today is the only difference. They were lax upholding those morals. But unlike today they recognised they were morals. And most people then would be horrified by the depravities of their time being celebrated and encouraged today.

Very sad case, that dear child having his life taken, and nobody found responsible. Great illustrations as always and superbly narrated, thanks for this, one I certainly never heard before. RIP William.

Good morning B.C...i noticed in your narration of the story the focus was on a man being the culprit...I personally think the reason why the case was never solved is because police didn't look at women as possible suspects 👍

My thought, too. A woman disguised as a man. I didn't believe the father was the culprit.

I still cannot abide it when a judge instructs the jury to find a not guilty verdict. Why impanel a jury if the judge can declare the defendant not guilty ? If the jury would conclude the defendant is guilty the judge can always set aside the guilty verdict and declare the defendant innocent. An excellent video as usual. Thank you so much for your detailed work in preparing this presentation.

I know times were different back then, but good Lord, you send a five-year-old out on his own, out in a big city? The boy should’ve never been alone. This is how things happen poor boy poor mother.

I have 3 sons I saw the video and and the pic of little boy. I almost didnt watch. Poor child. Why did landlady send him on errand. Not her baby. Thats all I could think. People were made with more grit than I. Bless them all. Thanks for giving him a voice as others have said. Morning BC I'll be pondering for a while.

It seems like witnesses were plentiful back then, either motivated by notoriety or reward. Investigators invented evidence or interpreted it in ways that were beyond their ability to understand even if it may indeed have have been tied to the crime.

Sad story all around. Murder affects the life of so many people. An unsolved one, of a child to boot, even more so I think because one must add doubt, frustration and everlasting suspicion to all the emotions brought out by the violent death. No wonder some lose their health or will to live. Here, today, we've all had a thought for little William Starchfield. Thank you for that Brief Case.

Your work is always so interesting: you start with the crime, which gets our interest, and then the details and clues are disclosed, we meet the suspects, and consider them ourselves as you give details, and then there's a resolution. Well done!

Another truly fascinating Brief Case. I love all these old historical crimes that are pretty much unheard of. I feel sorry for the mother who had alot of tragedies losing 3 children yet she still managed to carry on. She deserves alot of respect. What I cannot fathom is why on earth would anyone kill an innocent young child??? U must be a truly u hinged monster to commit such an awful crime. Imo I seriously doubt the father killed the child & the fact the killer has never been brought to justice is very upsetting aswell. May William RIP

I think it probably was a catch all phrase then as they really didn’t have any knowledge of real mental illness at that time. Many women were out into mental asylums got nothing more than difficulties at a certain time of the month. And it also happened that husbands could have their wives out in those asylums for no reasons at all except what they said!
