Amy, every time I hear your Scottish accent I think of my Nan. She left Scotland right after wwII bound for America. Her heart missed Aberdeen all the time, despite having had harsh and brutal childhood. I hope to set foot on the land that lost her. I’m sure that you hear from folks with Scotch ancestry all of the time, so I apologize. You are not Scotlands keeper of it’s lost souls. I do hope that you are over that brute of a virus and make up lost knitting time💗💗💗

No offence on my part, lovely. So special to have this connection to Scotland through your Nan. Your motherland. The Scots are a far flung people - especially following the highland clearances. But also just for folks looking for a better life than could be afforded here. But there is something special about this land that keeps calling all those children back home. And for those of us who’re still here - well, it’s an honour and a pleasure to share our living, our making, our remembering with all those with hearts and minds and ears to listen. love love love the bright pink gloves and headband!!!! best way to place buttons and buttonholes is lay your piece next to a shirt or jacket. most garments space buttons 3-3.25 inches apart measuring from button center. you can actually just draft a strip of paper for yourself or for your husband- then just use it as a guide for future projects.

All your finishes are beautiful. And, your button choice is perfect. Such a shame that manufacturers are now selling buttons in numbers that almost always cause you to buy a greater quantity than what we need.

Oh the Hogmanay intro made me so wish I lived in a place so steeped in history. I loved Scotland when I visited years ago. My Lento is done and is lovely, but sadly has less positive ease than I wanted and the neck is scratchy, despite being soft alpaca and merino. There will be a second Lento knit a bit bigger and without the folded collar, in hopes that will make it wider at the neck. That blue yarn from Ginger Twist would make a divine Lento and that yarn from South Africa could inspire me to knit a Cargill sweater. I loved knitting the Cargill cowl. So glad you are getting back to good health and I hope the viruses will leave you alone from now on. Thanks for a lovely”visit”- sorry we didn’t get to see your mystery man in his perfect vest with minus a few requested pockets.

Oh my goodness, I made a Lento sweater for my daughter in law, last fall. It is almost identical to yours, but I used a speckled yarn and a cream coloured mohair silk. It was probably my oldest yarn in my stash. But I had enough left over to make a wee little one for my two-year-old granddaughter. I’m glad you’re enjoying continental knitting. I learned to knit this way when I was six years old, as my family is Finnish and that is how all Finns knit. It is a lot more ergonomic and easier on the hands. Especially since you knit so much, you might find it beneficial. I occasionally knit English style, especially when I am doing colour work. I loved the TV show, The English. I thought it was absolutely brilliant and heartbreaking. I might watch it again because I absolutely powered through the episodes.

I enjoyed this video and it took me the first 52 minutes of it to sew in the ends of my Twists and Turns, but I did it! It looks and feels fab, and I can't believe I stuck in for a 4 month period making and sorting mistakes of all types, as well as doing some bits right, in the end! I came to your talk on Stephen West shawls and colour choices, bought my yarns that day at the Perth Yarn Festival (having taken my inspiration picture with me, and taking heart from what you said.) Love all those projects, very inspiring to follow my heart. ❤If you are looking for buttons, have a look at merchant and mills, their wooden buttons are stunning and as they have a this shimmer, they go with a wide range of shades in a colour and somehow change their aspect, I find that they look very different depending on the shade of the garment colour.

HAPPY MONDAY TO ME! I can’t believe you and I watched the same video for the purl stitch! I also don’t like to purl. If I am doing stockinette stitch I can backwards knit for whole rows which makes it so much easier! Since I am going to begin making sweaters the video intrigues me a lot and then seeing you do it is awesome! Also seeing your beautiful pictures with Rebecca brought a smile to my face! @@TheSablelou I think that would be a beautiful combination. The unspun yarn takes a wee bit of getting used to. But it's much easier when you hold it with a strand of laceweight. Will you hold your Nutiden single or double?

Ah! Lovely episode--shawls, gloves, color.... You have convinced me that I need to knit a Lento--so instead of purchasing that pattern alone, I ordered the Laine issue 11 thinking maybe I could get it on the sale, but from Laine my shipping would be the same as the book price; so I found it in the US for $15 with $12 shipping; but, now I am in "need" of to some lace suri to go with my fingering weight yarn 🤔. I am also really enjoying the Inspector Gamache series (I did the same order as you: TV, then books) ; I'm currently on book 2 and am on the waitlist from my library for the next. I can't believe Death in Paradise is still going! Thanks again for sharing your time, and calm, and joy with us.

I am very old school. All my DMC is stored in 2x3" bags folded in half w/#'d labels. All my overdyed is on large binder rings by maker/color name. All in a clear plastic carry bag. About half of my floss in kitted w/chart & fabric.

Thank you so much for a very entertaining, yet peaceful episode. I too was very unwell in the first part of January so knitted very slowly but was able to immerse myself in light, but enjoyable books. I highly recommend The Funny Thing About Norman Foreman. I’m knitting the Aurora Cabin Shawl. I loved the pattern, then wasn’t sure. I saw your yarn choice for it and decided to try the Isager Highland Wool. I choose, Chocolate, Rose, Stone, Clay and Chilli. I really wasn’t sure about it after the first section but decided to carry in. I’m twelve rows into the final multi-colour slip stitch section and I love it. It’s developing more of a drape and when blocked should be gorgeous. There are a huge amount of stitches though! I also have the Anthe by Moonstruck Knits on my needles and have my eye on a couple of her other shawls.

Another enjoyable episode. Interesting to hear about your local John Lewis. My local one in Greater Manchester moved the craft/dress making section to make way for Christmas stock. It has now been left in a tiny area with less room for stock, in fact there is now no dress making fabric at all and also a poor button selection. Really hope it doesn’t disappear .

Another lovely podcast Amy, love the footage of New year's eve and the shore area of Edinburgh. Your shawl is gorgeous and the beads set it off beautifully too. Your Lento is gorgeous I love tge neutral shades. I am taking part in the Lento KAL too. Thanks for sharing how you changed the neck , I think I will do this for my second Lento. I finished my practice sweater in DK , my first sweater in the round, I wanted to see how the construction worked out. Im now ready to do the next one in Alpaca/mohair kid silk. Sorry to hear that you have not been well Amy glad though that you are on the mend. I'm trying to learn continental style of knitting, I get a lot of hand and wrist pain as I am a thrower too. I also have arthritis. Thanks for sharing the video re doing the purl stitch, very helpful. Your Aurora cbin shawl is beautiful too, lovely colours I think you are right to continue with it. Your colours for the colourwork sweater are a lovely combination . I'm learning to do colour work at the moment but doing a cowl. I'm also going to learn to do Brioche knitting. This year I want to concentrate on learning new techniques snd also use up stash . Take care Xx

Ah, well, when you start brioche, you'll definitely want to do your brioche knits continental style. That was when I had to learn continental knits, as the throwing style was causing pain. Check out Andrea Mowry's tutorials. Really helpful!

Hi Amy, many thanks for another lovely episode - I always enjoy your podcasts and am constantly amazed at the number of projects you get through. Re knitting styles - have you tried hold the needle in your right hand 'pencil' style ? I think it is called 'lever' style. It would mean that you don't have to take your hand off the needle to throw the yarn and so prevent the problems you are having. It is closer to your current style than the Continental method and so easier to adopt I would think. Good luck and best wishes, Kristine.

Thanks for sharing that continental purling method. I knit continental but because I'm self taught my purls are.... well... weird. They work for me but if I do loads and loads of purling it can become painful after a while. I'm going to give this way a go. This was so beautiful, it made me cry. Will you put a button on the pocket as well? Or would it be too large for the pocket size? Just for looks... I do love the color of the yarn chosen for his vest. I am a sweater lover and have several vests as well a couple of poncho sweaters that have one button closure underneath arm. I've lived in Florida so long, the first hint of coolness, I pull them all out to work into my wardrobe. The house is block and stays cool so it's cooler longer in the house than outdoors. I'm always disappointed to turn the a/c back on 😒 It's always lovely to visit with you❣ I love speckled yarns the best!

I do hope you continue with your Aurora shawl. I just love your colours and am so keen to see how they play out!. I knitted one in a month over December (crazy fast, as I wanted to complete it before the official start date, to see if I wanted to do a second one over January! I just LOVED it! Never knitted anything so fast, but never again at that speed, haha.) I'm now on my second one (with a third on the needles but hibernating atm) and have another planned with different yarn weight and colours in mind. What I found throughout, was that as I completed each section, it seemed to have a different vibe. It's nice and large too. The way the colours are spaced, & play together, I think is really exciting.

The Aurora shawl is one of my favourites that Stephen West has designed and I too am keen to see how Amy's colours play out. I'm busy with other projects but you never know I may get around to knitting one at some point this year. I'm in awe that you've knit or are knitting 3 or maybe even 4.

Aurora shawl: not surprised you are ambivalent! The beautiful beast has around 130,000 stitches!! As I got halfway through my second slipped section, I realized I had between 20 and 51 long days of knitting remaining. I put it on timeout, and am making sure to play with other projects instead, and only pulling it out between other smaller things (I normally knit only one thing at a time, finishing everything). Not sure what makes that one shawl rather oppressive- each row is absolutely simple. But it still feels like heavy lifting. You seem to thrive on huge numbers of finished projects, so it’s no surprise that you are having your eyes wander to your planned projects as you do never-ending K5 Sl3wyib!!!!

wow, gorgeous yarn! when you brought out that Leading Lady Lace I did gasp out loud the colors reminded me of jewels. Whoever wins that will be pretty excited i'm sure. I just started the Ilya and also thought the neckline was not looking quite right. I then re-read the pattern and realized that the rib is only the first bit of the neckline and the majority is supposed to be in stockinette! (if you are going for the cowl neck)

Have you seen Godless? Another amazing modern Western that is quite far removed from the usual Western trope. Lots of amazing female characters and the sets and costumes are incredible. I’m going to check out The English thank you for recommending it!

As the poet Brian Bilston has noted January we all know has 6184 days and it probably seems like many more when you've been as poorly as you have Amy. Good to see that you're on the mend now. I think that your egg shaped hand wound balls are a delight but if you're looking for hints and tips to make them rounder Alex Collins has a great 3 minute tutorial here on KZfaq. It's like magic and is my go to method for hand winding these days. Alex also has a lovely podcast that I enjoy watching.

I follow Jacob's Ridge Animal Sanctuary on all of the social medias, and the main human there, Julian, is in "The English!" Check them out, if you don't already follow them.
