As someone who has been stalked, while at uni, by an individual who - for weeks - refused to take "No!" for an answer, I have never doubted the dangerousness of such situations. I was fortunate to have a group of "big brother" classmates who strongly encouraged this 'suitor' to abandon his quest for my affection and leave town. Tense times, indeed.

I had 3 different stalkers in my early 20’s. It was awful. This was before computer tech took off but I got called all the time. I developed an anxiety about answering the phone and literally just stopped picking up the phone for years. I still don’t pick up unless I know who it is. Now it seems so easy to be stalked. A lot of young women are still going through this. Older single women are also being targeted for relationships for their money/savings today. “Fishing.” Some things never change.

The secret is that they were allowed to rely on common sense. These days, you can literally catch someone in the act, with the murder weapon in their hand, covered in the blood of their victim, have them confess in front of dozens of witnesses, and there will still be a cult of halfwits claiming that the killer is "innocent". Don't believe me? Google the name "Wesley Cook" (ne Mumia Abu Jamal).

It's even frightening to have someone go off on an emotional tirade because you said no. It is a punishment for the person who did say no? I don't think we do enough to instill in boys that a real man knows how to politely take no for an answer and not use either physical or emotional force. Poor Mary.

Though the majority of stalkers are male, women are not immune to this behavior. I do believe that it starts with the environment they grew up in. An over indulging parent or a home life of violence where the abusive parent controls through fear and intimidation so that Johnny or Jane grow up believing that if you don't get what you want by asking politely then taking what you want by force is acceptable.

not only does this show human nature dosen't change with the whole I can make you love me stuff...but also treatment of the victims. Now we do have stalking laws in most places but it is so difficult sometimes to get the police and court to listen to you. often treating it like a joke when we know how dangerous it can be. and to expect the victim to constantly put up boundaries, the example here her employers 'make him stop coming here.' HOW? HOW do you expect her to do that? She told him to stop thats all she can really do. home, work, the street, mom's house; etc nowhere is a safe place for the victims. it is a constant fear. meanwhile the stalker gets to do whatever they want.

Good morning! I missed you last week. I was sick and when the nurse came in the room and saw me on the phone, she told me I had to put it away. I asked her to let me finish watching your video and she came over to see what I was watching and she watched it with me.😂😂 then when the doctor came in, she jumped up really quick and asked me to put the phone away. I told her you were just watching it with me right in front of the doctor. I wasn’t the only one that was going to get in trouble not by myself. Anyway, this story is sad and scary. It’s obvious James was clearly obsessed with Maryanne and refuse to take no for an answer, and it led to her death. It’s too bad back then they didn’t have things as protective orders and stalking laws like they do today I don’t know if it would’ve helped in this case because he showed up at all times of the day.. I put no blame on Mary and because she seem to just want to be his friend and when he started to be a little improper with her, she made it quite clear that she didn’t want to see him anymore. He had no intention at all to listening to her demands, so no matter what anyone said to him he was going to keep stalking . My only wish is that Maryanne wouldn’t have went up those stairs by herself. There’s so many we could say what she could’ve done or what she should’ve done no matter what I think in the end James was the type of person if he couldn’t have her, no one could.. I also think in the long run he probably would’ve killed her anyway because she kept telling him no he was so obsessed with her that I think if he saw her with another man, he probably would’ve killed them both Thank you for another awesome story. Have a great week. Bless

This is an almost textbook case of erotomania, which co-exists and is a common symptom of bi-polar disorder, and also less commonly with schizophrenia. The incidence occurs 3 times more frequently in women than men. These people suffer delusions and become totally obsessed by their target and cannot be reasoned with. Medical management in the form of psychiatric medicines, consistently administered during their lifetime is required to calm and manage this disorder. Behavior modification counseling on its own has no effect. It is thought that there is a deficiency in the temporal part of the brain that affects reasoning ability. If not physically prevented from contacting or seeing the person of their obsession, the erotomaniac's behavior will continue to become more intense, irrational and violent. They like to "own" their victims by killing them without remorse. Anyone can be the target of this kind of dangerous obsession and stalking, but it is a common problem encountered by famous people.

Those are not real images, as photography was yet to be invented. They're most likely AI generated images, perhaps based on sketches produced by newspapers covering the case at the time or maybe just made up.

I had assumed as much, but brief case generally does an excellent job at finding images that match the details of a person's appearance, and their attractiveness was mentioned in the story. I honestly did not consider AI as a possibility, but that is a neat idea, if you can just put in your list of descriptors and get a "photograph" of the person. Would be at least as accurate as many painted portraits of the day, haha.

@@BriefCaseOfficial that’s why I see AI imagery like Midjourney and others as a bonus for creatives like you. The images really added another element to your story. You did a great job jumping on this technology before others. Even though I recognized it, I still thought it was cool. It also shows you want to bring the best available tools to your viewers.

Hi B.C.! Early stalking. I’ve been stalked a few times. It’s sick the lengths people go to just to torture themselves. I love you so much! You sounded a bit hoarse in the beginning, try honey lemon tea! Use real honey if you have it. It will sooth it. You’re still my favorite crime narrator and historian! The research you do is absolutely amazing. Until the next Brief Case😊

I studied abroad in the early 90s and i had a stalker in my first two years there. I'd find flowers at my door, later sweets and love poems. It took a sinister turn when one note described how i had spent the previous two days, what i wore and what i had eaten at the student cafeteria. I did go to the police but back then it wasnt taken seriously. I'm not easily frightened but the notes turned darker every month. I came back home and finished my studies here. I never found out who it was.

@@BriefCaseOfficial yeah, I'm fine, it's been 30 years now or so. But in the back of my mind I am still wondering if it was someone I actually knew and spoke to. It was very strange and I had to get out of that situation as I was very young and alone over there. I still think I made the right decision.
