I really appreciate that you told us about the lesser known person (to many of us) that was Trotsky's executioner. Who he was, where from, how he became an NKVD agent, the lengths and years he dedicated to his mission. I liked it too that you continued Mercader's life's story after the act and the sentence to its end. Great storytelling. Thank you!

I got snagged when I heard the name of the director Vittorio De Sica, but then it turned out to be an all-out gathering of historical figures doing what they did to become famous! I had always heard that Trotsky was killed with an ice pick and imagined it to be the kind with a long nail with a small round wooden handle at the end.

Leib Davidovich Bronstein was the real name of the Bolshevik leader Leon Trotsky, the co-dictator of Lenin after the October 1917 revolution in Russia, the creator of the "Red Army" and the actual founder of the "Gulag" archipelago. At his behest, the first concentration camps in Europe of the 20th century were set up in June 1918, the "konzentrazionnyie lagerja" for "parasites" and "anti-Bolshevik elements".

Great video. One small correction - the theory of permanent revolution was actually the original program of the Bolshevik party. Even Stalin aped this idea before Lenin's death. The Bolshevik Party minutes show that the aim of the Russian revolution was aimed at being the first step towards an international revolution. It was the Russian revolution that sparked the German, Italian and Hungarian Revolutions in 1918 and the British General Strike in 1926. Stalin and his loyalists did not want to deal with the storm and stress of fighting for world revolution, especially after the end of the Russian Civil War. It was around the time and after Lenin's death when the parochial idea of socialism in one country began to be circulated. "Trotskyism" was an invention of the Stalinists who wanted to bury the original program of the Bolsheviks and smear those who fought for the Russian Revolution and were opposed to Stalin's maneuverings. The idea of socialism in one country/ the theory of two stages was used by Stalin to undermine mass revolutionary movements of the 20th century, most notably the Spanish revolution to devastating consequences. Permanent Revolution explains that it is ultimately the task of the working class in backwards countries (like Tsarist Russia) to fight for reforms by taking political and economic power into their own hands. The problems faced by the working class and oppressed in especially economically backwards countries should be solved by the capitalists in theory, however the bankruptcy and degenerate state of the ruling class pushes the ordinary masses to take mass independent action (i.e. revolutions). This would mean that capitalism would have to be abolished and a planned economy under a democratic workers state must be implemented by the workers in order to transition to socialism. However the economic basis for such a transformation cannot be found within one country - which is why the revolution would need to spread in order for a revolution in any single country to survive. It is by combining the productivity and technique of several nations under a socialist federation that you can form the actual basis for a socialist transformation and overcome the problems that workers from all countries face. If you'd like to learn more I'd highly recommend checking out marxist.com Keep up the good work!

Excellent episode! Over the years I've different stories about Trotsky's death but most of them were about Russia's KGB being involved directly but they were not ordered to kill him. I've never anything about all of the details you provided! Thank you very much!

Very excellent history. Thank You. A couple of corrections though. Trotsky was born Lev Bronstein. Trotsky was his alias/revolutionary name. Also, Professor Robert Conquest reported this story & the fact that the assassins name was Ramon Mercader in his 1968 book, "The Great Terror".

Yes I did include his name in my original script, but in order to shorten it, I took it out, the book is interesting, I didn't know that, thanks

@@meemurthelemur4811 it has been a bit of a challenge, health-wise. I'm glad you're heading down the flea markets. I used to do that. Fun times! Are you in the US may I ask and if so, what state? I'm in PA. We have quite a few flea markets. I used to do them every week when I drove and had the strength to move all that stuff in and out and back in the vehicle. Hope you are making out well! ❤️

@@resarm5007 I'm sorry to hear you're not doing well. I have a number of health challenges myself, so I know how that goes. I'm actually in PA too! Yep, we definitely have tons of flea markets an antique stores. It's a state pastime, I think! And you're right, hauling all these boxes around really is a pain in the... back! We did a double last weekend, both days, and it about killed me! Hope you're having a good one!
