Hi just wanted to say thanks again for the prompt replies and for posting up the video to begin with. I couldn't of done the job without it. Went pretty smoothly. Only thing that had me with a "gulp oh crap what did I do" was when I was rolling back the cam sprocket closest to the firewall to put more tension on the timing belt and have it so that the belts teeth were aligned correctly, I went too far and then had to roll it back the other way a little. Well "a little" was a little too much and the engine must be balanced or something because it acted like a spring and all of a sudden my wrench flung down 180 degrees with the timing mark way down towards the bottom. Yeh my heart dropped. I didn't panic though and just slowly rotated the gear back up to where the timing mark on the gear was again close to the one on the metal flange. I then did much smaller steps to get the belt on correctly. Took it to work this morning....so far so good..knock on wood.

Caution they are spring loaded. The first and only time that happened to me, I had a grip on my wrench rotating the nut on the cam pulley to line up the timing mark and like you said, it just yanked my hand clockwise about 90º in the blink of an eye, I thought I lost a couple fingers or broke my hand but didn't. It did scare the shit out of me for sure. I'm at the point right now where the rear cam pulley was off 1 tooth with the other marks being dead on. I marked the belt at the spot one tooth clockwise where my pulley tooth needs to be. I zip tied the other pulley in place and put a wedge down at the crank sprocket they were perfect and I wanted them to stay that way. I loosened the tensioner which gave me plenty of slack. I lifted the belt up and put the mark on the pulley in the mark on the belt i made and went down to the tensioner and got it all back nice and tight. After rotating the TB 2 full rotations, the cam pulley towards the front of the engine is 1/2 tooth off. FML! How in the hell is that possible??

First - Thank you for this super video! After lowering the engine to access the front cover, At 4:50, you noticed that weight of engine and transmission was let down to rest on pulley/shaft of power steering pump... you recognized that was bad and corrected the engine jack quickly. !! CAUTION to any others that do this job on similar vehicle - if you make this mistake, as I did and as shown here, you may break the seal on your PS pump - and it is a bitch to get out (Mitsu Eclipse). Especially when working off the floor. Be careful if you use hydraulic jack for engine !! Back it with a stand if you leave it for any length of time as your hydraulic jack may have a slow leak and release as mine did over the evening. Came out to finish work in the morning to a slow PS leak dripping off pulley. New pump needed ($140 reman) %^&%! Thanks again for the video!

Excellent in depth video. But man, what a job! I certainly learned one thing. I will Not be attempting this anytime soon! Just not set up for anything this involved out of my modest home shop. Looks like I'll need to start saving up and have it done professionally. Providing I can find a mechanic that knows what they're doing.

There is a specific tool that you put on a torque wrench and a specific torque you put on the tensioner pulley then tighten it up. You'll know when it's done right because after you cycle the engine twice to check timing marks the grenade style pin that you pulled out of the hydraulic tensioner should slide right back into it. If not the incorrect tension was put on it as the manual states.then starts the re-compression of the hydraulic tensioner very slowly in a vice to get the pin back in and start over. I would advise anyone against just using snap ring pliers and blind guess of tension

if you're doing a timing belt job and you have a new one already, you can use the OLD belt around the crank and up to the alternator, and folded back onto the crank pulley; this way you can break the bolt free without a special tool. This can be duplicated with the cam belts as well. If the belt is broken, you do a figure 8 in a sense with both ends tucked under the pulley you are breaking free. Just some 2 cents for those without a good impact or tool on hand.

Hi Iam at the point with this job where you said to insert the bolt back into the crankshaft to align the marks up. Do or should I put the balancer back on and then the bolt or is just the bolt needed? also I can't just turn the motor over, I already removed the alternator and serpentine belts. Can I just with a torque wrench rotate the motor until the marks on the crank line up? Once done with that, Iam assuming the marks for the top gears should line up but what if they don't? Iam not near the car right now. Just trying to get everything in my head ready for when i get home to go on to the next phase with this. This is the part Iam most nervous about because I don't want to throw the timing off on this and end up with serious issues. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for posting this. I did this job 4 years ago/56,000 miles ago. My water pump is now beginning to leak. Do I need to do this entire thing all over again or should I being the mileage? Not sure how long these parts are suppose to last or how often this job needs to be done. Not sure If I will be tackling it again. I have gotten a quote from a mechanic that has told me for the 7-8 hours this job takes he will charge me $300 in labor. That sound about right? Any help kindly appreciated. ALSO: you mentioned your replacing the "seals" at the 19:17 mark in the video. What seals are you referencing and where are they located? How do you replace those?
@fixingcarsandstuff
@fixingcarsandstuff 9 жыл бұрын
Xtremevette The seals are the camshaft seal and the crankshaft seal.The are oil seals behind the camshaft pulley and crankshaft pulley for the timing belt. due to age they can start to leak oil.Seal puller installer demonstration here is a video showing a little about the tool.If you should do it all again, tough on the pocket book but you might as well as long as you are there. can depend on how easy or hard the job is (was).

@dodecahedron1228
@dodecahedron1228 Жыл бұрын
The water pump kit usually comes with a gasket. The original one the car comes with is metal. You should use the one that comes in the kit, though. I used a little extra silicone with the gasket it came with to ensure no leaks. It would be a pain to have to go back for a leak after all that work.

It looks like he doesn't read replies very often. I needed to know how the pieces of the crank pulley go together. I did not see that here. The car I have was worked on by idiots. I had to buy a new crank timing gear. Three pieces. They way it was when I got it, the pins in the back wear smashed and sheared. So was the big one on the front. No instructions on how they go together. But from studying it, it looks like the metal ring goes behind the gear and sensor ring? They had it between the gear and sensor ring. It was spinning when I got it. The sensor ring, that is.
