WE Could Have Sunk the Boat - Goiot Escape Hatch Failures | Episode 101

On this episode we replace an escape hatch that could have sunk our boat! It comes from an issue with the escape hatches that have been know to detach from the sailboat hull, usually causing the boat to sink and we fixed it just in time!
We have know about this issue for a while now, and its something that has worried us considerably but also one that we have been quite unable to address until now. It requires us to be in one place long enough for the company to send the replacement hatches to, as well as that place big enough that the company in Europe can send them to. THEN, once we receive them, we have to EITHER haul the boat out of the water - what we wanted to do originally, but costs us nearly $1000- OR find a safe spot that is calm enough to complete the work safely from underneath the yacht.
It finally all came together in Mexico, we stopped sailing long enough to receive the hatches, and tied up to a nice marina in La Paz. Here the water was calm and conditions were good to complete this arduous task... but not all the stars lined up perfectly and it took us far more work than it should have to get this troublesome job complete. But after teaming up for a full day, busting some knuckles, calling some experts, and a little but of cursing, we finally got it removed and swapped out for the recalled replacement. FINALLY!

When working in the water, if parts can fall down, put an umbrella upside down in the water. It will catch what you drop.

No warning label on the replacement?!?! The idea of a guest being on board and thinking it would be nice to have the window open to touch the water would haunt me.

who the hell designed that thing?? ahh yeah glue will do for the near water line constantly wet hatch that cannot fail at sea, no need to bother with screws. Absolute madness!
@rszkodzi
@rszkodzi 2 жыл бұрын
@@fergusoddjob The idea wasnt bad. If you think about it, its an escape hatch. Worste case you pushed on the window and poped it out to escape if the handles broke. The glass was installed outside in, so sea water was positive pressure to keep it closed. The issue is the glue that was used and the ease of which it poped out. Rather than using both a popable window and handles they sshould pick one or the other and engineer to spec and if its a popout design, there needs to be maintenance and inpections performed. There needs to be an escape mechanism for the boat when its upside down. Its safer that way.

Some people seal them shut...I would... a hammer is a much better way to open it if you ever need to. But the placemnet and design of some of them is counter intuitive.

You adapted and succeeded--good work! The pin can become cocked when attempting to drive it out with a screwdriver or a smaller tool, making it even more difficult to remove. If possible, use something that is close to the inner diameter of the hinge tube to apply even force when attempting to drive out those expansion hinge pins. That looked like a tight space with few options. Thank God for the grinder!

I would have tried to find a very sandy beach with a deep stern drop-off to ground the bow on but at least shallow enough to stand where the problematic hatches were located. Great job on your repairs though!!! Love you guys! Just let me know if you get tired of my 'know it all' comments. 1) Goiot is gōyō. It's all over my boat. 2). You need a bigger hammer. Yes, I know you don't want the extra weight, and I just borrow one, cuz I have a baby hammer too. 3) those black bushings cost a fortune, if you have extra, send them to me to replace my diy bushings. Those that are exposed have turned to dust. 4). I hope you rinsed that hatch and handles, and gasket w fresh water. 5). Is Evolias have a higher waterline? I saw the growth on the hatch. 6). You guys rock for doing that in the water. 7) xo

I own an FP and it has the Goiot hatches, I never knew about the recall...ThankYou. One issue I did see on your repair, salt water on your rubber seal. The salt water will dry out the seal and the salt crystals can dig into the rubber. So when you do haul out in a few months clean the crap out of the rubber seal and add some moisture to the rubber. In fact you should do that every time you haul out. Again thank you for the heads up. I will be contact FP this week.

Absolutely killer video. I'm mechanical and I'm thinking through the whole video so what's the actual problem with that hatch??? And then at the end you drop the other shoe. All that water so close to that hatch... Yikes! (Probably give me nightmares.) I'm currently chartering monohulls and will soon pass my catamaran certification, then I'll charter multihulls as I search for one to buy (and then head over the horizon). Fountaine Pajot and anything with the Goiot hatches is also off the list: Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Catana-Bali, and Nautitech. There's no excuse for anything like this to happen. There no excuse for any company with engineers to even spec something like this. There has to be a mechanical retainer to that polycarbonate. This might've worked: Vise grips on the outside, hammer on the visegrips. This will tend to stretch the rubber, banging on it from the inside tends to compress it. (Of course this is all academic at this point. But... there will always be a next time.) You guys are a brave couple (crew) to do this in the water. And great teamwork. btw a great temporary lube especially for rubber/plastic is Windex, or just ammonia. These are Bases, and bases have what property? They are slippery (soap is Basic). Probably not too much penetrating ability so it might not work on your window hinges. The classic use is bicycle handle bar grips. Bases and Acids (their opposite) need to be wet in order to have their properties. So spray down the handle bar with Windex get the grip on, it should slide a lot easier. Then the Windex dries - no more sliding. Rain? Not likely to penetrate very far and re-wet the ammonia. And get a couple of pairs of hear protecting headphones. It's very stressful to work with the noise. Thanks for this video, and the warning... and the nightmares.

You need to order a set of screw grabbers off Amazon just in case you end up with a stripped out screwhead . they are a must another thing to have on hand is a 50/50 mix of ATF Transmission fluid and Acetone or called Propanone. this mix will unseize anything a few squirts and let it set for a bit and it works every time way better then the stuff you buy at the store.

Just for you know, the manufacturer of the glue is the only responsible. There has been a trial between Goiot and the glue manufacturer and it's been settled a few month ago. The glue manufacturer has been recognized responsible for providing shitty glue although he claimed its glue was OK and meant to keep these hatches safe.

A couple of big suction holders to tie off to. Drill a very small hole into the rubber and then spray with oil. Buy a real hammer. Put silicone grease on the new pins. You need to grease the handles. Davey on barefoot sail and dive had the same problem as you and ended up cutting them off with the angle grinder. One of my favorite tools along with a die grinder. They both take no prisoners, regards Steve.

So the hatch is securely bolted to the boat but the glass is just bonded to the hatch and this bonding can come loose over time? Astonishing! I would want it bolted and bonded. Silly question but I take it that that glass is super thick, strong and can withstand an impact from objects in the water?

I'll be honest, I'd have been with the grinder after the 2nd failed attempt....no need to worry about cutting parts that are being thrown out! Hope the 2nd replacement goes smoother

I have two screens, and was doing other things while I watched, but did I miss a second replacement? Or is there not an identical escape hatch on the other hull?
