I've always thought the five members of the godhand from Berserk looked alot like the Cenobites. Hellraiser might have been some type of inspiration.

The Cenobites are there to offer great pleasure through horrific pain, they offer this only when one is tempted to open the box, after all those who open the box have already begun so by seeking out such dark pleasures, the Cenobites are merely a way to actually experience these dark pleasures that the seeker so wants, whether it be consciously seeking or subconsciously seeking such hell.

I've always considered the Cenobites to be 100% settled in the gray area, not "Good or Evil" but individuals who's actions are dependent on the interpretations of their victims/"customers". Their complete emotional detachment from their actions (in regards to dishing out the "reward" for summoning them) makes them endlessly fascinating. In the original two movies their actions and demeanor is just so "matter of fact" that it makes them such captivating creatures. They aren't out for revenge or malice, they are simply fulfilling their end of the bargain that comes with opening the box. Even their pursuit of Frank and later Kirsty isn't motivated out of some emotional investment, it simply them "putting their books in order", Frank escaped and needs to be returned to them as that was the deal he made by opening the box. And even though they made a compromise with Kirsty, she still made the same deal (unknowingly) as Frank by opening that box and therefore she has to "fulfil " her end of the unspoken pact that comes with opening the box. I personally don't enjoy any of the expanded lore that had been attached to the Cenobites that wasn't in The HellBound Heart or HR 1&2, as demystifing a monster is the worst thing you can do. The second you know what Pinhead does in the morning or what his hobbies are, the monster becomes too "human" and the danger of the unknown evaporates and it's just another person.

The Lament Configuration isn't the only way to summon them. There are puzzles of various design scattered across the world that serve as a means to summon or be brought to the Cenobites.

If they do do a reboot, I hope they show how, when the box is opened, Franks senses are enhance to the point of agony. I always thought that element was so terrifying. The idea that ever slight movement or noise is overwhelming to the point of pain.

I don't think many people could handle the old films these days. I grew up as a kid watching them, so I had no adult voice telling me what I was seeing. I had no filter to put it through, so I just watched and absorbed. Ive seen them all. Your right, it should be rebooted, along with Maximum Over Drive.

The first cenobite was acephale’s headless man. Discordian, hedonistic. Limit experience by Bataille. Although maybe the actual first cenobite was the picture he held in his pocket. The grinning mutilated face and body of ling chi, death by 1000 cuts. Thich Quang Duck also comes to mind, the self immolating monk of veitnam. Cenobite’s are of course angels, I see their reference from the most worthy of humans. Those who’ve reached the depths of experience.

In the original book "hellbound heart" Clive Barker, the writer and director of the book and movie, wrote the story in such a way that the humans where bigger monsters then the Cenobites. Frank and Julie kill innocent people for personal gain, but the cenobites can only be summoned by solving a VERY complex puzzle (it takes frank at least a whole summer to do so in the book). This can also be seen in "Hellraiser II" when the mentally ill girl is tricked into opening the box, yet Pinhead stops the other Cenobites from taking the girl. Saying it was desire that brought them, not hands. Personally, i feel the series went drastically downhill after "Hellraiser II". In "Hellraiser III" the Cenobites and Pinhead become just another "evil baddy" in the vein of Freddy Krueger and Jason Vorhees.

I just watched the first 2 hellraisers the other night and im so FUCKING happy I did lol. That was one of the most creative and on-par with modern day screenplays I've ever seen acted out. It definitely helps that clive barker wrote the book, the screenplay and directed it too for sure

I think Cenobites represent the dark side of human nature. As humans we tend to find gratification in mundane meanings like lust, gluttony, pride, sloth, and entitlement. However, what if such meanings are turned against us? What if we get a taste of our own poison? In Hellraiser mythology the Cenobites offer pleasure beyond the experience for humans realize that Death & Hedonism are the cause of their own damnation. Cenobites provide such a "means" to each human' s sins like being slaughtered by chains or being turned into another cenobite as ways to gratify the same human soul's deepest desire.

Just saw the first Hellraiser, definitely scary and grotesque. As for the Cenobites, judging by the chains, hooks, body parts and mutilation, they’re totally demons running a butcher shop in hell.

The cenobites are so intriguing. I agree that the franchise could use a reboot, but they've soiled the Hellraiser name so thoroughly with innumerous crappy sequels that I worry a reboot would be ill-received.

No reboot please. It is a timeless classic. There's no need to stain its legacy with a pc fest of beautiful actors who can't act and a director who's vision can't see past cg. It is perfect the way it is.

When i was younger and i blagged a vhs of hellraiser, i always thought that when pinhead said you either summoned pleasure or pain, it was a game of chance.. You either had the chains rip your flesh off and faced an eternity of suffering or you entered a heavenly paradise. Looks like no matter what , its bad to open that box.

I guess the pleasures the cenobites gives you are like a rollercoaster. You stand in line, nervously waiting...Should I turn back ? You go forward and get strapped in thinking: Is this the end ? Slowly the car goes up to the point were it will let go, no way back ! You swoosh down the track getting the incredible feeling of being XXXXXXXX. The car stops, you get out and say: "And to think I hesitated..."

Yaaaaas!!! I always watch the first 2 Hellraiser flicks around Halloween, every year. Favorite horror series. It's a shame they released a bunch of not so great sequels.. I'd LOVE to see the original redone..

Dang, pinhead was a guest at a pop culture show, I was gonna get him to sign a Rubik's cube ( nice & safe , I would think!) , I got kind of cold feet about it, thought it would be too weird, I wish I had done it. Lesson: if there's something you want to do, try, see a live concert, parachute, anything, DO IT! Ya never know if you get another chance

They're sort of mentioned in Barker's novel "Weaveworld", except they're referred to as "surgeons" there, and are stated to be some kind of interdimensional magical beings. They create a living, flayed, flying sheet of human skin that attacks the main characters, which is kind of the opposite of Frank.

My favorite was Hellraiser:Inferno. It was so dark and entertaining part, I just loved It,and actors were on point.

I figured that the Cenobites' Hell is a psychic dimension that has always existed and that the various world's religions' versions of Hell were inspired by it. Leviathan is an elder god who lures mortals from our plane into finding ways of opening doorways into his own (such as lament configuration puzzle boxes) so that he can recruit some and torture the rest, feeding off their anguish. btw- a cenobite (pron. sin-eh-b-aye-t) is just an archaic term for a monk living in a monastic community, as opposed to an anchorite which is a solitary monk who has chosen to live alone in some remote wild place, such as a small uninhabited island, in order to find God.

Clive Barker has to be one of the greatest horror writers of our time. I recommend everyone who is into this stuff to read The Hellbound Heart (the book that Hellraiser is based on) but most of all the Books of Blood series. Each book is a collection of short stories, so it's an easy read and the stories range from bizarre to creepy to fucked up, but they're all pretty interesting.

They are intricate metaphors of feeling and intuition all people experience we they embark on doing things that they know it isn't morally right but still seek the drive and thriving rush to have or do. Never ever thinking the consequences that will unfold afterwards when they indulge themselves against instinct and it turns against them harshly upon decision.
