Ouch, Under quoted a job? Feel the sting fully and stick with it. Never walk off no matter how frustrating it may seem. Finish up, make the customer happy, save face and learn from it.
The painful frustrations are the real secret.
Screw these other guys who only brag about how good they're doing.
Your going to have break downs that make you feel like a worthless nobody.
Your self esteem might drop really low, but always remember, your in a "learning / earning" game,.

Old video but still such good advice. Until you feel it such a hit you will never understand. I knew a business owner who had a gym before the keyless entry picked up. If his employee wasn't there the owner himself would actually come early in the morning and let people in at (5am or 6am). One day he was late and we were all waiting for 30+ minutes. The next day he found us all in the gym and gave us gift cards for making us wait. That professionalism was so impressive. I held a high opinion of him.

Keith I came back and watched this after being in business for myself for a couple years. A job that’s underbid by a small factor is one thing. If you start a job that you know is way off, that’s another. A failing business owner can’t help anyone, if you’re confident in your services, then you have to be confident in a price that’s higher than your competitors. Got to be willing to hear no 4 times or more to get a yes. Your men depend on you to run the business smart. Don’t walk them into a trap.

I've been in the business for ten years now and I relate and attest to pretty much everything you say in your videos about starting and running your own business. I think it's cool that you can put it out there for others to possibly get a better foothold from the get. And actually allot of the information you put out there is really useful even for some who have been in the game for a while but have also been stuck in a rut and can't find the way to move to the next level. We've all been there at some point. "It's not easy to get respect in this industry, but if you don't respect what you do you might never get it."

Love that you get down to the grit and acknowledge the realities of working for yourself in this profession, you always hit on that emotional rollercoaster that I can relate to when under quoting, I did 9 hours of pruning/cleaning for $160 talked down from $240 which was still way way under cause I had no real concept of billing, that's one lesson I'll always remember, thanks again

Good video! It might be a good idea to put some money to one side as an emergency fund for situations like this.. I agree, the customer should never know that you messed up, after all you messed up not them. Finnish the job as agreed, make the customer happy, do as much damage control as possible while keeping the work quality as good as it should be, take the hit, learn from it, don't do it again.
@keith-kalfas

That's a good idea. I still made $80 profit in 6hrs. Was supposed to make $300 profit. So I stopped the bleeding, sent my guys home and finished the job myself. Lately, I've been taking ONLY high paying jobs. But.. Hey man, when your short on work in the slow seasons, sometimes you gotta take what you can get.

The Landscaping Employee Trap Good save man, lucky you spotted the error early enough, you still got paid more than a minimum wage job, Happy days... Last year I did a leaf cleanup, quite honestly 1/3 what I should have charged, my brother and I worked $5/hrs last year. I am guessing they will want me to do it again this year, I could probably do it in a little bit less time but what should I do when they ask about it? Thanks for all of your videos, kinda been binging them lately.

possible stupid question alert: could it be wise (as a newbie) to come to a figure in my head (of what i think is realistic), then, over-quote the customer? i figure, i'd be giving myself a "deadline safety cushion," and, if i finished "early" (or when i originally thought i would actually be finished), then i would just tell the customer i finished early and charge them less for the job (making them happy). just something i thought.

If he keeps his employees there probably on overtime because its Saturday afternoon already. I can tell you never owned your own business before and had to suck it up and finish the clean up late on a Saturday night just to break even on a job. I bet his employees made more profit on this job then he did.
