My understanding of the Paul Varelans ECW story is that he was brought in to put over Taz, who they were selling as a legitimate submission expert, in what was billed as a "shoot fight". There were some concerns, since Varelans was actually a fairly good fighter who made the finals of UFC 7 and lasted over 13 minutes with a prime Marco Ruas, as well as 6'8" and 300 lbs., and if he wanted to, he could've ruined everything by beating the shit out of Taz. To apparently make him more amenable to doing the job, Hyatt promised him a blowjob. So all went down according to plan, and when Varelans came to collect for keeping up his end of the bargain, Hyatt told him "I don't blow jobbers". This didn't go over well with Varelans, who apparently went apeshit and trashed the locker room. Probably not a good idea to make a promise like that to someone that big, trained to fight, and very likely gassed to the gills and then renege.
@misterelom
@misterelom 2 жыл бұрын
Paul Varelans got legit knocked out during that match with Taz (Taz talked about it in an RF Video shoot interview back then when ECW was still around). If you go back and watch the match there's a spot where Perry Saturn runs in and springboard dropkicks Varelans in the back of the head and legit knocks him out (unintentionally i'm assuming) then Taz deadlift suplexes him and chokes him out for the finish.
@BestWayKilla
@BestWayKilla 2 жыл бұрын
@@misterelom Well, yeah, kicking someone in the back of the head seems likely to cause a knockout, especially if the guy isn't trained to take bumps or sell or anything. Not likely that would've put him out if he'd taken it head-on, though, Varelans could take a beating. He got absolutely abused by the likes of Tank Abbott, Marco Ruas, and Mark Kerr, and none of those guys could knock him out.

I love all the Conrad hosted podcasts and I listened to the one where Bruce loses it about Conrad asking why Hulk had to go over at Wrestlemania IX and it’s one of the funniest things, Conrad and JR have such a good working relationship and JR only gets worked up by stupid decisions and matches they talk about in shows, but he knows how to push Bruce and Eric’s buttons for sure! Hahahaha

I loved it when Conrad finally got Bruce to admit about the Wrestlemania 9 finish with Hulk walking out with the world title after Yoko won it from Bret "It's what Vince wanted", since it had nothing to do with the upcoming European tour, which was already sold out, whether Hogan had the belt or not.

Actually Bret Hart has said that he confronted Hogan about not wanting to do business with Bret, Hogan was shocked and pulled Hart with him to Vinces office and had it out with the old man, turns out, Vince lied to both of them. He told Hogan that Hart was fine with doing the job and then told Hart that Hogan wouldn't do the honors for him. Also Jeff Jarrett has said that he had no problem jobbing for Chyna, just used the timing to settle accounts.

2 things to know about #5 on your list: 1. Bret refused to drop the WWE title in Canada. 2. Bret refused to drop the WWE title to Michaels pretty much ever. He was getting revenge on HBK for scuttling their WM 13 rematch where HBK was supposed to do the job for Hart and put him over for the title. Also you're missing something else Survivor Series 1997 was basically his last match with WWE as he was leaving for WCW,there would be no rematch with HBK.
@lazykahn1979
@lazykahn1979 2 жыл бұрын
Wrong on #2 and #4. Hart was going to drop the belt to HBK but after Michaels said that he wouldn't do the same for Hart, Hart refused to do that. Plus Hart was leaving for WCW in a month and there was an "agreement" between Bret and Vince (really just a ruse by Vince) that they would figure out a place and a time for Bret to drop the belt after Montreal.

@@TheGeneral308 Vince is an idiot. Numerous people (Ross, Cornette, EvenVince himself) knew that Bret saw Vince as a father figure. Due to that and the fact that Bret has too much respect for the business, he would never do that. Also the idea that he would not drop it in Canada is a lie. He wouldn't drop it to HBK in Canada is the truth. Undertaker even offered to be part of the match as a triple threat to win the title because he knew Bret would be O.K. with that. Then Taker could drop it to Michael's at the next PPV because of interference from Kane. It's just Vince and HBK that kept pushing for HBK to beat Bret in Canada.

People forget that Bret Hart had a clause in his contract that if he were to leave the WWF, he would have complete creative control over his wrestling character for the last thirty days he was there. So he had every right to refuse to lose anywhere. I'd like to think if everybody had kept calm and came to their senses, they should have let Bret win and after the match have him give the belt to Vince, shake hands, goodbye, thanks, etc. But not the case as everyone was on a knife edge.

The WWE needs to bring back theFiend and have him go on an undefeated streak like we have never seen before. Then keep him unbeaten at every pay per view event, including summer slam, wrestlemania, etc, and they'll create their biggest star ever for the next decade or more, and fans would absolutely love it. How hard is that?? They could create a bigger star than Hulk Hogan and the Undertaker, by doing that. Ratings would be off the charts, despite it becoming so predictable, and yet it's like the WWE is too stupid to know it

I look at WM9 from a purely business angle and I think the reality of the whole thing is something like this: Hogan was supposed to win the title at WM8, this is well know fact. But Hogan did not win the title. It is likely that Hogan had it in a contract that he wins the title or gets paid some large sum of money. Hogan was only going to be in the WWF for a short period of time in 1993 and he is a bigger draw than Bret so the best business decision is to get the belt on Hogan who is the bigger draw and not have to pay out the contact clause. Knowing Hogan was not going to be in WWF long term and knowing that Bret (or Luger) was going to be their next top wrestler WWF has to get the belt to Hogan without making Bret look weak. WM9 accomplished several things. It got the belt off Bret in controversial fashion and got the belt on Hogan in a way that is a major surprise to the world helping to sell the encore showing of WM9. Bret is protected, the bigger draw has the belt, and you can sell WM9 encore to people who want to see what happened. Hogan was never going to lose to Bret without MAJOR interference as Hulk Hogan is a brand and must protect itself. So the easiest thing to do is get the belt back on Yokozuna in controversial fashion to keep Hogan protected and make Yokozuna the monster heel. Thus when Bret/Luger wins the title they've defeated the monster heel solidifying themselves as #1 while not putting Hogan down. WWF wins, Hogan wins, Bret wins, everyone wins. At the time everyone was happy, Hogan got a bigger pop than Bret. It is only in hindsight that people complain about the whole situation.
