Not quite. At least in her origin (Savage She-Hulk), she was a tough on crime attourney that was going after a mob boss that killed her mother, almost killed her (that made Bruce use his own blood to stabilize her before getting her to the hospital, almost getting caught by the police since he's a fugitive) and later succeeded in killing her best friend (who's alive and kicking in this series) and frame it on her. While Jeniffer indeed got a confidence boost by becoming She-Hulk, she wasn't a doormat (at most she was comic relief to the writer in the "Sensational" run). She has also never thought being She-Hulk as a curse or that it would cause any impediment to her life. She welcomed it with open arms and was extremely grateful to Bruce, who would feel guilty for spreading his "curse" on her (back then Hulk was still a tragic character). Jennifer was competent, but after becoming She-Hulk she got enamorate with the reality of being a superhero, of not being ordinary and having the power to do even greater good. Sensational She-Hulk's run was more sex positive and a lot more humorous in tone, but she was still exciting, heroic and never a bore. Just self-aware (literally, for better or worse). Unlike the best of She-Hulk in the comics, this show's Jennifer is an ironically self-aware bore who does nothing about it because of current year victimhood.

I dont think that that's the biggest issue. Ofcourse the show would have been infinitely better if it had stayed at least somewhat true to the source material but even if they had never read a single word of the original lore, they could still have written a fun, interesting, relatable show that stood on its own merit. The biggest issue to me is that the writers are horrible, narcissistic, morally bankrupt, assholes dedicated to a lifestyle of entitlement and decadence. They're incapable of writing likable characters because they have no idea what a genuinely likable character may behave like.
@ChampagneSharks

It isn't that the writers realized what you said and made any conscious changes; it's that there are different writers for different episodes, and each of them write Jen as a self-insert instead of a consistent character, so she changes to how the writers see themselves. Perfect girlboss Jen is when Jessica Gao writes her. Flawed Jen is from Dana Schwartz and others, but even then nothing is ever really her fault but the fault of crappy men and mean girls.

Which just illustrates how bad the team is. Every series has different writers doing different episodes, yet they maintain consistent characters by hashing the base plots out together. And the showrunner ensuring continuity. It's like none of them have any experience in a workflow that has been successful in thousands of shows across decades, possibly a century. Ironically, they may have made their own system because they know better than all the men that came before them.
@ChampagneSharks
@ChampagneSharks Жыл бұрын
@@bryanwoods3373 I think you’re right and I think the lack of professionalism in collaboration is because they don’t care about She-Hulk as an independent character but only as a vehicle for self-insertion and personal therapy. I read an interview with Jessica Gao and she said the writing room approach is that they just share personal cringe stories with each other and then write them into the script for She-Hulk. I also read Gao say she views writing as personal therapy. With these priorities it makes Jen a vessel or mouthpiece for whoever is writing her that day instead of an independent voice they have to strain to capture consistently who may or may not always act the way they would.

I love how there's no reason given for Titania's power in the show. She's just enormously powerful (and shockingly weak compared to Jen) and nobody comments on it or has any curiosity. Was she born that way? Was it a lab accident? Was she created by Dr. Doom? Show doesn't care and the characters don't care. And what's the point of her anyway? A rival for Jen? Titania was a joke the second she appeared on screen. I figured she'd be a one-off, because once you do that you can't expect the viewers to take her seriously as a threat. In that case you can kinda get away with not explaining it, just say she went to jail and call it done. But she keeps showing up while being as effective as she was in her introduction.

It's not just her. This show has casually introduced a man who can't die, a bull-man hybrid, a vampire, and a shape-shifting elf, just to name a few. The bull-man has one throwaway line to explain how he exists, which is more than almost any other character. Holloway said early on that"enhanced individuals are appearing out of the woodwork" early on, and I guess that one line is license for the writers to bring in whoever they want, no backstory required.

@XxTaiMTxX
@XxTaiMTxX Жыл бұрын
@@JeffCaplan313 You can do both, but it's very difficult to do. Understanding women also involves knowing how they got that way to begin with and why they were ever oppressed in society. I understand women more often better than they understand themselves. That is, I understand them to the point that I can turn them from enemies into friends, can convince them to date me around 70% of the time, and get them to trust me implicitly. This is just from interacting with them enough and asking questions. Lots of failures to understand all the underlying logic behind every action they take. It has lead me to find that most women are just not "tolerable" in the slightest since I know most were raised wrong. They were raised as spoiled children by their parents and then by society and have never REALLY been held accountable for anything, nor are they ever really going to be. A small minority of women, who come from homes with a strong father figure have been "taught right", and don't fall into this category, but most come from broken homes or ones with weak fathers. So, you have women acting like they're 8 years old, perpetually, and sometimes finding an intelligent and mature woman appropriately acting her age as a well-balanced individual. The women who end up as "actual people" rather than "children", are easy to love as they talk almost everything out, use logic and reason, and don't make excuses for the things they do or feel. But, they're rare.

Making this show a representation of "current year womanhood" couldn't have been a better (though ironic) anti-thesis to both who She-Hulk is and what a superhero should be.

Midnight's Edge, here on YT, have claimed that She-hulk has had several reshoots. AND that the episodes are out of the planned order. The "first episode" was a much later episode but test screenings rated the season poorly. Show runners switched this season's episode order around, almost back to front, and reshot new scenes in an attempt to patch the continuity. Tom and Andre claim the original plan was to spend time with meek Jen and have her become She-hulk half way though. Test screeners were displeased with not seeing She-hulk, so showrunners had to jam She-hulk into the first ep.

Starting to think test audiences weren't just confused by the origin being in the middle.

All the audience of any show/movie wants is for the characters to be written as human first, and male/female as a much more secondary priority. Start by setting up a loose character archetype, such as for example "Lawyer" or "Doctor" or "Scientist" or "Parent" or etc. Layer in some personality traits associated with this, and perhaps a few here and there that typically aren't but can still work for what you are using them for to give the character some flare as an individual. Once you have all that set up, you can start layering in some gender traits as a lower priority thing to help establish the completed identity of the character without their gender outright defining them. The characters should be flawed by design, which means the writers are aware of what these character flaws are and are deliberately structuring the plot around said flaws. This is where the comedy, drama, and character development comes from. A flawed character doesn't have to develop if they're not the main character, but if they don't then their lack of change should be a character interaction with other characters that is of much more consequence to said other characters over time. There's a number of different roles these unchanging characters can fit, such as acting as a comparison point to highlight the growth of the main character over time, or to act as a running gag, or etc. If a character does change over time, it should always, ALWAYS be because of something in the plot naturally and believably molding them into this new "shape". If you have a character go from bold and confident to meek and submissive, it should be because of something in the plot believably diminishing away their confidence, such as trauma and/or guilt. Likewise, if a character is going from bratty and self-absorbed to polite and compassionate, it should be because something in the plot has shaped them into that new role. A character suddenly changing for no apparent reason and with no explanation given is jarring and unnatural, and simply doesn't work in a plotline that's meant to be taken seriously as the characters personal story. It's what you expect to see in low level fan fiction that exists to fulfill someone's personal fantasy, not in an official product. The shortcoming of these writers is that they are so obsessed with gender that they've forgotten to write their characters as human. Gender is top priority in the identity of each character, and who they are as a person is directly shaped by this obsession. It's even to the point that individuals can't even do their jobs properly because the gender politics of "woman good, man bad" is all that matters and is clearly the only thing that motivates these writers. So much so to the point that when criticized for it, they jump to their isms defense immediately even though all the critics want is for them to treat their characters as human beings instead of as gender stereotypes.

The name Pug is a dogwhistle that he likes to get pegged. They would have just called him that, but Peg is already a name.

This show should've been a PERFECT inside view of the Marvel world from the "normal" non super powered ppl in Marvel. Like what happens when the Hulk smashes stuff in your neighborhood and you need to call the insurance company or sue ppl for super hero related battles ,etc..🤷‍♂️

IIRC Bridesmaids actually has a job supporting the Bride. If the Bride is all dressed up and suddenly has to use the bathroom or something she needs a BFF help her take care of business without messing up her dress. Everyone is supposed to come together to support her on her special day.

Am I the only one who find it odd that the same people who tend to prefer 'Strong, Independent Women', also tend to be not too keen on Individualism as we know it? I mean, you got to pick a lane at some point, don't we?
