Yoga for Piriformis... Some of my favourite yoga for piriformis poses!
Piriformis has the function of externally rotating the hip joint, with the help of the deeper and smaller GOGOQ muscles. Weakness in the GOGOQs can lead to Piriformis over-working and building an excess of tension - as can over-use and a lot of sitting! Here, I show 5 poses that can help strengthen and stabilise the deeper hip rotators and release tension in piriformis.

About Helen Clare
Helen is an international yoga instructor and natural running technique coach. She’s taught 1000s of students worldwide on retreats and via her online training programs and membership platform, helping them to discover greater strength and ease of movement - to move with more power, grace and, ultimately joy.
Previously a competitive swimmer, Helen has always been athletic and fascinated with improving physical performance. This led to starting her yoga practice, which developed much more than physical benefits. Helen teaches yoga, inspired by modern movement and conditioning approaches, to not only enhance our physical capabilities - but to enhance our internal calm and wellbeing.
A keen road, then trail runner for many years, Helen developed her unique approach to yoga and natural running after years of frustrating injury. Her methods have since allowed her to run injury and pain free for over a decade - and is passionate about helping other runners to achieve the same.
Helen uses the term ‘connected’ to symbolise the connection between brain and muscles, muscles working together, the balance of strength and mobility, the link between body and mind, and community connection.

I’m going to be revisiting this video! I’ve been to different massage therapists, chiropractors, have done numerous KZfaq videos and this is the first video to give me relief from my piriformis in years!! You are an angel, thank you for giving me back my health!

Hi Helen, I just wanted to let you know your particular exercises in this sequence completely changed my life. For 4 years, I have been dealing with a major issue where I couldn’t sit comfortably anywhere and hold my children or pick up groceries or do very simple tasks because of my piriformis muscle. I did have back surgery which fixed a herniation the back pain 2 years ago but I still had trouble sitting or being mobile. After a few more years I got another MRI and EMG and found everything was clear but I still had pain. The doctor suggested I had Piriformis syndrome & an IT band issue. That night I found this video and immediately felt a release of that muscle! All of my mobility came back 100% so thank you!!!!! They were the perfect exercises!!!

Helen I wanted to let you know that I'm so glad I found you after googling "yoga for piriformis". I was having so much pain from a ten year old piriformis inury last week and this has given me so much relief. I'll do it every day and all exploring your other running videos too. I wonder if you'd consider re-recording this with better audio?

Thanks Helen for you video, just a suggestion, . The sound can be improved with Bluetooth earbuds with microphone connected on your phone, You. will record video with the phone and the audio with the earbuds. I do appreciate so much your video,. Namaste

Thank you Helen, 2 years ago I actually cured my right leg (irritated piriformis) with this sequence. I did it for 2 months straight. Now that I pulled the left one, I return to your video because that was the only thing that helped. Namaste

Awesome stretches!!!!! Thank you so much. Wanted to add that one of the causes of piriformis syndrome is hyperlordosis (arched lower back). These stretches really helped me today. I appreciate you posting this.

Amazing. Thanks so much Helen. I have had hip problems for 3 years. Different diagnosis and even surgery on my hip. Your yoga is the only thing that has worked. I love it. Now that your yoga helps so much I think I will see a neurosurgeon to get a diagnosis on piriformis, maybe this is what has been causing the pain. If it is confirmed then I already have a massive headstart from your exercises. I've done a week and feel amazing!

These stretches feel amazing. I have scoliosis, stenosis and degenerative disk disease. So, basically, I’m the oldest 34 year old I know. My right leg/hip is in constant pain. I’ve gotten a few epidurals in my back and been told I’m a candidate for surgery. But just don’t trust spinal surgery enough to go that route. I can’t afford physical therapy or to keep getting epidurals (which I hate anyway! Needles in my spine at $500 a pop, every other month!) So my spine doctor told me to look up piriformis stretches. After I do these I’m nearly pain free for a solid 5-6 hours! I know that doesn’t sound like a lot. But I haven’t been pain free in years! So 5-6 hours feels like heaven! I’m sure if I keep up with these, the 5-6 hours will just get longer and longer! I can’t do the full pigeon pose yet, my knees don’t like it. But the rest feel so good! Thank you so much! You’re a wonderful teacher! You answer the questions I have without even knowing I have them. ☺️ 🧘‍♀️

Hi Nikki! That is so awesome! Thank you for letting me know. I really hope that your pain free time does continue to get longer and longer! I have known yoga to do incredible things, so I am very positive it will. I have worked one to one with a couple of different scoliosis suffers and it has helped them hugely. You might like to try anything where you can comfortably lengthen the spine (possibly down dog) and strengthen and lengthen the side body. I have another channel: Run Better with Yoga, with some other videos that might be useful (even if you don't run!) Thank you, Helen

My nerves in my legs became very stiff and a severe feeling of weird nerve sensation, i needed to stop my thighs hamstrings and the back of legs became cramped so, I stopped. What should i do it a cramp stops me? Do you have any experience of this happening with anyone?

Just try a little at a time. Don’t stay for too long if you’re getting uncomfortable cramping. See if that sensation lessens with time! Consult with a physio also :)

Hi.iam suffering from severe lower back pain radiating down to left leg.pain in pyriform region and SI joint region.i have L4_L5&L5_S1 disc bulg with bilateral nerve compression with narrowing of canal and angular fissure.i always feel stiffness at my back region.not able to bend Even slight.my life is affected a lot.now a day's severe pain and burning sensation in left leg.please mam help me.iam bit obese also I am not able to do even mild stretches

Hi, i m suffering from piriformis syndrome. I cant stand for more than 3 minutes. And as I sit, pain goes...its almost one month..very painful. Will these exercise help me..And how many days it will take to recover? Please reply

Shalini Bhatt hi I hope you’re doing ok. These exercises may help you, I obviously can’t say for sure but they have helped many others. You should see a physiotherapist if you haven’t already if the pain is still that severe. Only practice the poses if not painful.
