I'm sorry, but I'm going to completely call you out on this video. The information is completely wrong and you're doing people a huge disservice by posting content like this. Every single LED must have a driver in order to work whether its internal or external. Period. LEDs actually use 5 volt DC in order to illuminate and it's the driver that handles the 12v payload from your transformer. Also, all of those lamps are pretty much the bottom of the barrel in quality and light output. Brilliance and FX make the best LEDs on the market hands down, why arent they mentioned? Also, most lamps have an IP rating of 61 to 65, I'm not sure which "engineer" is doing this testing, but these lamps would fail immediately.

@4:10 This is completely false. 12/2 is rated for 20 amps, so on a 12v halogen system, thats 12 - 20 watt lamps. Higher multi-tap transformers could allow you add more, especially on a 24v system utilizing a 30v tap. So many dark spots and weird shadows and the hot spots over the garage... Could have been better.

For those wondering if it should be a GFCI, the answer is not necessarily. If it's connected to a GFCI breaker or there is already a GFCI on the same circuit, you don't need another one- it's redundant at that point. If there is no GFCI anywhere on the circuit, then yes, a GFCI is a good idea.

Adam. My lawn guy ran over my end run and caused the wires to touch. That string shorted out. I found the problem fixed making sure wires were not touching. The run came back on but shut off after an out 15 seconds. All other runs on transformer are working. Any advice ? Thanks Joanne

Can I install my transformer on my siding?

Hey AK lighting, I just finished running a single run of 200' 10/2 wire. I stopped at the end of the roll because I assumed it would be too much drop. I have 96W of LEDs on the wire, and am pulling 11.36V at the end of the line. I was thinking I should hop on the 14V tap instead of the 12V, but I'm worried now I either don't know how to measure my voltage or maybe I was over estimating the drop I would experience. Think I'm okay as is and my measurements are within reason? Or am I completely measuring my voltage wrong? Thanks :)

The most important point was not mentioned here. Do you want to put lighting to show off your house to neigbors and attract attention to your property or do you just want to be able to stroll around your garden without falling over. I opted for the latter and most of my lights are low on the ground with sensors to ground movement and only one mounted higher up to illuminate steps up to my front door.

The transformer needs to be plugged into a GFCI Outlet, not just any outlet like you said in this video.

2*k*i*l devide by (12v*3%) This math gives you the required wire size in kcmil. 2*12.9*amps*length 12.9 is for copper. If it was aluminum it would be 21.2

Got to admit, this was confusing. Point #1 says is a misconception that landscape lighting is hard. Point #5 also says it’s a misconception that a regular person can’t do it. Ok, so landscape lighting is easy. Got it. Then point #2 comes along. It’s a misconception that there’s not much to landscape lighting and you really can just throw up some Home Depot lights. Whoops. He goes on to say that landscape lighting is “an art and a design”. He uses the pillar example to show what an average Joe might do versus what some professional who knows how to light for textures would do. He then goes on to literally say, “…you have to know how to do it and get professional lighting so it can create that look.” So yeah, maybe Joe Average can throw up a dozen Home Depot solar powered path lights on both sides of their 10 foot long walkway and turn it into an airport runway, but no, without a significant amount of research and data, including specs on each fixture, the average homeowner is not going to think about putting 3 uplights around a post a few inches away so you can get the “three dimensional” and “texture” look. They’re not going to consider light pollution or light trespass. They’re not going to know about the long shrouds that downlights will have so you don’t see the actual bulb when you put it high up in a tree. They’re not going to think about lighting a larger tree with 3 or 4 uplights. They’re sure as hell not going to think about load and voltage drop. I live in a pretty typical residential area where 95% of the homeowners have done their own landscape lighting. They get their lights at Home Depot. Most are solar, but some are actual wired, low voltage. They love to light both sides of the short walkways from the driveway to the front door. They put a light every 2-3 feet. They buy a box of 20 lights, and by god, they put all 20 in the front flower bed. So, yeah, landscape lighting is not difficult to do. It is, however, difficult to do correctly. I guess I just made a commercial for professional landscape lighting companies, but an amateur can do it. You just have to do your homework first. And I’ve pulled a few all-nighters…….

Self soldering heat shrink connectors - even better.

14 gauge is perfectly fine for the vast majority of modern led projects leaving you with room for expansion on longer runs (who’s still working with halogen?). I just wired my parents yard, two zones, 55w on the first, 25w on the second - the 200w transformer is no where near its limit. Project came out great.
