The church began baptizing babies because St. Augustine taught that unbaptized babies who die go to a special place reserved for them in Hell. Later, St. Thomas Aquinas taught that unbaptized babies don't go to Hell but to Limbo, which is nice but it's not heaven. Pope Benedict XVI realized the absurdity of it all and proclaimed that Limbo is nonsense. As a result, Catholics don't have to worry about their dead children: they're in Heaven!

Thanks for your presentation on Catholic study bibles. I used the Jerusalem Bible since the mid 70's. I also own an NAB study bible, NIV study bible, Oxford Annotated Bible (with Apocrypha), Ignatius Study Bible (New Testament), and recently purchased the Word on Fire Bible - Gospels. I agree with you on the NAB and NIV study bibles. I found the Jerusalem Study Bible notes more faithful and to the point than the Ignatius Study Bible. I was disappointed the the Ignatius Study Bible. It seemed to be trying to address in the notes some argument that I wasn't privy to, sometimes mentioning all these views that aren't traditional before eventually (sometimes) getting to a more traditional viewpoint. The editor seems to like finding "moral" interpretations (along the lines of Origen), that aren't apparent in the text. I found it confusing that the cross-references were both at the bottom of the text and embedded in the notes. The concordance was a pleasant surprise. I prefer to look for the literal, historical, and "typical" interpretations from the early fathers. I guess it depends what you are looking for in a study bible. I bought my wife a Great Adventure Bible because she wanted to understand the timelines found in the Bible. I also bought my daughter a Didache Bible; it works well for her. I bought the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture, 2 volumes on the Gospel of Matthew because I was looking for commentaries written by the Fathers. I was surprised that the commentaries they collected on the Lord's prayer excluded my 2 favorite commentaries by the Fathers: Peter Chrysologus (the most elegant) and Cyril of Jerusalem (concise but complete). I guess ultimately it is good to have multiple references to get a more complete understanding of the scriptures.

You should post more of these types of classes on KZfaq. They will teach more people and they are a blessing.

Please do publish content on the Holy Fathers' opinions on scripture. Those opinions would be of greater worth than the notes found in my NAB bible, which are, often enough, worse than useless.

These videos speak to the depths of my soul. The only think that could make them better is if they were released on VHS and I could have watched them 25 years ago.

Have you read the New Oxford Annotated Bible with apocrypha: revised standard version? If so, what are your thoughts and are there any reasons why you would or would not recommend it? From watching reviews on the New Oxford, I don't think I would pay much attention to the notes in this bible. I am mainly interested in the deuterocanonical/apocrypha books that Catholic bibles do not have and any other informative information it may contain. May God bless and allow you to keep up the good work.

If I didn't know better, I would think this was satire. The way you acknowledge the critical hypotheses, then just dismiss them off of hand... Like around the 48:00 mark, when you are commenting about 'how stupid would that religion be, that God can't even keep the forgeries out of his own holy book'... But how stupid is your own personal religion that your god can't keep these "lies" (according to you) from being spread, even by people who are clergy of that religion? Your lack of self-awareness is actually staggering.

You missed reviewing the Navarre BIble: New Testament 2008 edition. Also, since your video, two important one volume Catholic commentaries have emerged: The Paulist Biblical Commentary and the Jerome Biblical Commentary for the 21st Century. That would be great if you review them. Thanks!

My heart is warmed every time a Catholic gives honor to the LXX. Catholics and Orthodox both share a common heritage of using the LXX in the first 3 centuries of Christianity.

Emmaus Academic have published an English translation of the gloss of Genesis, entitled: "Biblia cum Glossa Ordinaria - Genesis, The Great Medieval Commentary." The translator is Samuel J Klumpenhouwer. He has a blog were he has announced that Matthew and Exodus are forthcoming. The page design follows that of the medieval manuscripts. It is wonderful.

The only problem with the conclsuon here is, just becasue the early church fathers taught infant baptsim deosn't logiclaly neccistate that it's correct. Keep in mind as early as the New Testment church there were already problems and false teachings creeping into the church. They were battleling the Judiesers and the Gnostics. At one point even Peter had to be rebuked by Paul.

I wish you were around when I was young, being forced to answer rhetorical questions in a CCD workbook by a voulenteer. My experience was that they likely didn’t know what was going on nor care enough to do anything but force us all through the motions, and accomplish that weeks box check. If we could have had an honest realist like you, who actually cared enough to read scripture beyond what was in the teachers guide and enthusiastically explain it to us, boy oh boy what a blessing that would have been. There is still this one thing which rubs me the wrong way in your whole excellent, valuable, useful review here. The first good English translation of the entire bible happened way before the KVJ and it was not the heresy-infected translation by the renegade vow-breaking Tyndale. In 1582 the entire English New Testament was published in Rheims in hermeneutic continuity with the Deposit; this was followed by the Old Testament in Reims in 1609 and 1610. Johnny-Come-Later was the KJV, published in 1611--and scholars think they used the new DR bible in the making of their protestantized agenda-ridden KJV translation. And "the Rheims New Testament came to exercise a significant influence on the development of 17th-century English" (so says wikipedia). For a Catholic scholar to scorn the DR descended from the early church in favor of anything Protestant is... misguided if one's first concern is the written part of Revelation as discerned and taught by its only authorized and empowered Teacher. I hope this is a contribution from one faithful and informed Catholic to another. Blessings.

You say St. Thomas More disliked Tyndale's translation "because of its viewpoint, which was protestant." You praise the Tyndale translation for some felicitous renderings. But in fact Tyndale falsified his translation in the interest of certain heresies. Tyndale always substituted the word “congregation” for ” Church” and “ordinance” for “tradition” because of the Catholic teachings attached to these words. He also translated “Little children, keep yourselves from images”; instead of using the accurate rendering” idols, and this false rendering is also due to his Protestant agenda. Against his vows of obedience he produced his false translation to facilitate the terrible revolution of protestantism. And I don't see any nod from you to the many many ancient vernacular English translations of parts of the Bible pre-existing the printing press. There is no English bible "tradition" before Tyndale? Regardless, this is a GREAT overview of English bibles since the printing press, and I Hate the NAB. Now I think I'll buy a ESVCatholic Edition, Thanks so much. God bless you and your work for Him.
