What a brave and intelligent shop boy! He was young and poor, but he had the courage to investigate and report his employers. When you are poor and report your social "superiors" to the authorities, there is always the risk that you will not be believed and that you will experience retaliation to keep you silent. He risked everything.

You have accurate insight. Only lets be honest...During time in history, the authorities for certain wouldn't have believed lower class accusations against a higher class. It's completely possible that the police would've even threatened him with false statement charges on top of the retaliation. Had it not been for the neighbor also inquiring this is probably what would've happened..."if a gentleman also corroborates, it must be true!" Was the mentality there... "Don't give people so much credit as to loan them the benefit of the doubt" -me

Sounds like Marie was 1 of those ppl, who are very easily influenced by the ppl around her. Just consider, how easily she came to wish to stay in the convent and become a nun, and just as quickly she adapted to life as a shopkeeper and then a model prisoner. No doubt, without the influence of her mother and the lover, she wouldve lived a happy and unremarkable life. Exactly the kind of person, where every1 would exclaim, that they would NEVER have thought her capable of it, coz without the influence she wouldnt have been. Basically, she was a pilot fish, whose nature and direction was determined by the person or persons, she was imprinted on.

Just as now, girl’s need a healthy relationship with their father. Without that emotional supportive background, girls and young women are more likely to fall for the first charmer that comes into their life. Marie’s Father apparently loved her as he so wished to seee her before he died. But Marie had been sent away at an early age and before then, her Father worked long hours with little time for his offspring. Marie’s Mother thought Marie was in the way and was happy to send the child away. In the convent, Marie was at least attended to and was made to believe that she at least had the love of God. Going back home at age 16 with hormones raging and beauty the only attribute she was aware of, she was easy pickings for any man with even minimal charm. Marie didn’t stand a chance.

From devout convent girl to murder... this account was fascinating. I wonder what became of young Marie's life after she was released, and also what happened to her mother's estate? Her death at the hands of those she loved would have been doubly painful. Her manner of death with the faces of her child and the man she once ardently loved was the double betrayal. She made her peace with God and determined to live a better life. Only for it to be savagely snatched from her. Please keep well and thank you again for all your efforts. Kudos to the "shop boy" whose curiosity and inquisitiveness led to these 2 murderers being apprehended - so often people are told to mind their own business. What did Leon possess that made a beautiful young woman and her mother fall for him like that? Also, mom didn't learn from the first theft, and still left money lying all over. Lust, greed, money, jealousy - perfect storm for murder!

The mother should have known from the moment that she brought her young beautiful daughter back home, that there would obviously be some attraction between her young lover and daughter. He must have been good at manipulating this older woman for as long as he. Too bad she realized what was going on to late and it cost her her life. She couldn't bare the thought of the inheritance landing in the hands of the sisterhood, so it was greed that led her to her demise.

This case left me feeling ambivalent. I don't believe Marie would've murdered her mother if it hadn't been for Leon's involvement, it sounded more as if she got caught up in it, in the moment. On the other hand, she did participate. But... I also wonder how young/old Marie was when she was sent off to live in that far away convent? Either way, considering her father's health wasn't good, and her mother wasn't motherly, I presume they didn't visit often. Then, she was made to move back home when she was 15, quickly became preyed upon by Leon, a man who she at that time didn't know was her mother's lover. And when Marie did find out about that relationship, Leon presumably told her xx lies, alienating her even further away from her mother... However, she did participate in killing her mother. As said, I'm ambivalent. One moment I think she deserved her sentencing, the next moment I think her sentencing was a bit harsh.

Fun fact: France beheaded its last criminal in 1979…a few months after Star Wars was released in theaters. A website used to ask the trick question: “Which happened came first…the last use of the guillotine as an execution device in France or the release of Star Wars? Most folks ( who don’t listen to this channel ) will wrongly assume the hullo time was retired after the revolution

That’s what I thought. I can’t imagine a progressive country like France using the guillotine for the death penalty. I’m shocked!

This story was unexpected; sad that a good girl like Marie was going to stay in a Convent for life but turned out to be accessory to a grisly murder: her own mother. In 1877 they had the "shop boy" very smart kid...today we have CCTV everywhere. Madame Boyer made bad choices cost her her life. Be well BC and Faithful listeners. Elizabeth C.
