This hits so close to home. I grew up in Alice and know people who knew this family, and I also know the family who owned the flying doctor planes. Was at Glen Helen last Christmas and had no idea of the tragic connection to the Bowman murders. I’m truly sorry that they came to harm - sadly, not the first and certainly not the last. Thank you for covering this. Those poor people. 😢 I hope that they did actually get it right!

Bailey's confession sounds completely different from the way the crime is supposed to have happened. But hey, being interrogated non-stop for days by people who want very badly for you to be the murderer might have that kind of side effect.

The Queensland police were famous for not being particularly ethical back in the day. While they were notably more corrupt by the 1980s (that would be why Detective Hanrahan's work was being questioned in the late 1980s), they were already known for extracting information by methods that wouldn't really be considered acceptable in a democracy. And, yes, Bailey's "confession" sounds like it was made up by someone who hadn't committed the crime and who hadn't read the autopsy reports particularly thoroughly.

@@resourcedragon to be fair, forensic science was not well established at that time. His family apparently couldn't provide a convincing alibi. There may have been other details of the murders that he was reluctant to share, for example it's possible his motivation was to rape the young girl and her mother. However, the possibility of police intimidating a suspect into a confession can't be ignored considering he was apparently aware his wife was also undergoing intense interrogation.

what are the chances he was there, spoke to them, had similar car, trailer, was armed, 'blacked out'? but didn't do it. Come on now, he's guilty as sin. Just because some author claims the detective lied doesn't make it so. There was never any serious alternative suspect
@annagettings4675
@annagettings4675 Жыл бұрын
@@blacklisted4885 No there wasn't any other serious alternative, and that's why they picked a totally random man who'd driven the same road. Because closing the case was more important than 'solving' the case. The confession details don't even match the forensic evidence! That road was long, lonely, ill lit, and had no residences, or gas stations for miles in any direction. Literally anyone could have done it! But it was a case that drew public attention, so had to be solved. So he 'solved' it, and became a great detective in the public eye at the same time. Innocent people are still imprisoned or killed to this day for the same lousy reasons.

I agree Jessica. And that length of interrogation wouldn't even be legal now. Partly because it can be used as a form of coercion. Hearing your wife sobbing having gone through days of it too, could easily cause a loving husband and father to sign a false confession. The descrepencies between the forensic evidence and the confession are so startling obvious too.

Thanks BC, this case is in my state south aus. I was posted to Alice Springs in 1997 for two years. I researched this case and found far too many inconsistent allegations. Which you covered in this narration. Sundown station still exists as ruins, it is notorious for the 1957 murders. Glen Helen station still exists as does the border town between NT and SA known as Kulgera. Detective Hallahan in my opinion was a crooked narcisstic cop. Who was deceitful multiple times. RAY Bailey was an innocent man. Great research great narration. Look forward to the next Brief Case.

Definitely something off about that confession. A woman and young girl would not run toward someone who just shot their male friend, accidentally or otherwise. And like they said, it didn't really match the scene, which also sounds like they were shot near the fire, not while running from it; shot in the back, etc. Seems like they got the wrong guy for sure imo.

Fun fact: In the U.S. unless you are actually being charged with and held for that crime you can just leave an interrogation. You don't actually have to sit there no matter what is said to you. The police also can't deny you water or the ability to go to the bathroom. So if it drags on for an hour or more you have right to say - "Am I being arrested for this? No? Buh-bye then."

Washing the seat means the killer didn't want to get blood on his clothes. Raymond Bailey was lying with his confession. Sounds like the Jury didn't really believe his defense, at all. 96 minutes to convict him, means that his attorney was not quite good enough with his attempts. Yes, it does sound like Hallahan, lied through his teeth. Wild case, BC.

I haven’t heard of this case but it’s cases like this that put an end to the death penalty here. It shouldn’t have been applied in this case, with it’s lack of witnesses and evidence that didn’t match his testimony. I don’t think judges could make that call, though. One you were convicted there was a compulsory sentence of death on murder one and only a royal pardon would save you. Very sad.

Good morning BC. I am so sorry Mrs Sally Bowman, Wendy and Thomas Wheland met death in a horrible way as did the 2 dogs. Why would someone kill them all for what? It proves crazy people walk amongst us daily. I have my doubts about Raymond Bailey; he had conflicting stories, he was grilled for hours, was worried about his wife too. The murder weapon was not found, no finger prints etc. The Jury found him guilty in just 96 minutes. Detective Hallahan wanted to pin the murder and get it over and done with. Bailey (I think) was at the wrong place at the wrong time. As for camping; for me? never in my life. Have a very good week BC and faithful listeners. Elizabeth C.

That 'confession' didn't sound right from the start. How could he have shot them in the back if they were running toward him? The wrong type of gun. The wrong type of car. That poor man. I hate those police officers who behaved (and sadly there are still some serving today) that way. 'Solving' the case to bring themselves fame and promotion. The death/life imprisonment of the innocent, and consequences to their families, and the families of the deceased meaning absolutely nothing to them. The fact that there was/is a murderous person at liberty to act again, does nothing to convince them that the truth is more important. These policemen seem more like sociopathic criminals themselves, than those who took an oath to serve and protect, and uphold the law. It was one of the greatest days in the British legal system when the death penalty was abolished! Great work Brief Case.

I grew up in Adelaide, and spent the best part of 30 years working in Central Australia, but when I left to go there in the late 60's, My mother didn't want me to go, citing the Sundown murders to show how dangerous the place was. This of course was before the "Family " murders, the Truro murders, the Snowtown "Bodies in the barrels" murders, the Hells Angels vs Rebels bikies shootout and all the rest of the solved and unsolved murders in Adelaide which thankfully have not affected me !

I always wonder about the people left behind. What happened to Bailey's wife and son? What happened to Peter and Marion Bowman? They are also victims in this crime.

Depending on how old each of the four remaining people (who have to live with the guilt); were at the time of the crime during the 50's in Australia, I'd have to hazard a guess the adults are either dead or very old and the kid is now senior citizen perhaps?

I'd be curious as to Bailey's mental competency and whether his I.Q.was ever tested. His confession sounds like that of a child whose misbehavior has been uncovered and is confronted. He at first denies it, realizes that won't work, so he acknowledges his involvement but keeps changing his story, trying to come up with some scenario that will mitigate his guilt. He flips the story from it being an accident to self defense to being intentional; brings in additional suspects to blame; reverts back to the accident story; and so on. No particular motive was found out so the killings appear to be random. Like that of a low functioning intellect who was startled, or angered causing him to kill without thinking and then was unable to construct a satisfactory cover story. As sparsely populated as the area was, just being there and having contact with the victims is almost damning by itself.

The detective lied and Bailey was interrogated for days. None of it is valid, it can't be used to make inferences. It's not valid
@resourcedragon
@resourcedragon Жыл бұрын
@@no_peace: The "confession" appears to have been coerced but I'm with you on the question of Bailey's IQ and general mental competence. If his IQ were low or he had some other mental issues he would be exactly the sort of person who could be made to make a false confession.

@puwussssyyyy6653
@puwussssyyyy6653 Жыл бұрын
I also wonder if his IQ had been tested. That said... Doesn't at all seem like it was a valid confession to begin with. He was trying to come up with a scenario that would please the detectives and get them to stop questioning him. His car didn't even match the suspected car, it just happened to be black. If he was in such dire financial straights as described, he would have taken the jewelry at the least if he didn't want to look for the money. Why would he throw away the $25 he took from Thomas? Was there any evidence that Thomas even had that $25 to begin with? Why bother trying to hide the bodies? Why hit them in the head multiple times before shooting them? Why was his unregistered rifle never tested against the "evidence"? They had him for days, were pressuring him for answers and feeding him bits of information on the crime. He used that information to try and piece together some semblance of a story. That story would be corrected and more information given, meaning the story was effectively fleshed out by detectives. It was a big case and they had pressure to close it. None of the confession lines up nor do the circumstances that led to it.
@rmooreg
@rmooreg Жыл бұрын
@puwussssyyyy Exactly right. A classic example of interrogators leading the suspect down the path towards a legit sounding confession, tossing him bits of information that he is otherwise ignorant of. He is thinking that they are helping him and will be lenient if he cooperates. They know that his below average intelligence makes him vulnerable to this sort of manipulation, guilt or innocence not withstanding. It is a completely underhanded tactic.

I know they're supposed to keep the evidence indefinitely but frankly, the police lose (and also "lose") a lot of evidence. Whether or not there would be any usable DNA evidence around is another question. And there is also the question of whether or not DNA would answer any questions. Unless you could find DNA that didn't belong either to the victims or to Bailey, DNA isn't going to tell you a lot.

It's Unfortunate We May Never Know Who Murdered Those People.. And Even More Unfortunate There Were People In Law Enforcement Who DIDN'T Care Who Committed The Crime -- Just As Long Someone Paid For It! Justice CLEARLY Was Not Served On Behalf Of The Victims, Because.. If Bailey Was Truly Guilty, His "Confession" Would've Been Consistent With The FACTS. Where Lies Can't Prove One's Innocence.. The Truth Always Do.

I agree, Rebecca. This is a triple tragedy - three people murdered, a possibly innocent man unjustly convicted and hanged, and the true killer(s) never brought to justice.

Five dead innocent lives, that confession didn’t sound plausible at all, the way it was written/explained. And the autopsy backed it up as not happening the way it was alleged to have happened. No, not right at all. Thank you BC for telling their stories. I never heard of this one either and I live in Tasmania.

What a tragedy. When you mentioned the family staying at the motel in Alice Springs, I knew exactly which one you meant. We stayed there in January 1975 when my family was vacationing in Australia and New Zealand. It’s creepy to know that 17 years before we were there, a family that would end up murdered had also been there. I bet their girls were about the same age as my sister and I. It’s even more tragic that the man who paid the ultimate price for the murders was probably innocent because of a corrupt police detective.
