Great review! Would like to see the thermals when both machines are under load. Thermal issues can throttle cpu performance (especially when ran over a longer period of time) and that can explain the performance difference too! A lot of laptop reviewers don’t discuss that aspect, but it really has an impact on what type of experience users get when using these devices. Hope you can add that into your review!
@MashITTech

Thank you mate. If you look in the description we have a link to each individual review, I went more in depth on thermals in each review. As an example I ran cinebench r20 4 times in a row to show thermals and how the laptop starts to throttle. The T14 handles load like a champ but the xps does start to throttle (but the T14 is a much bigger chassis)

One other item that has become known is the machines will tune themselves over time based on the work done on them. So, if you compare two identical machines that have has a different workload you may get different results on the same benchmark. These are vendor choices when the processors are ordered from Intel that can make machines with the same specs perform differently with the Tiger Lake chips. It may be several percentage points.

Nice review although the comparison was between slightly different types of laptops. One a big business laptop and the other a small sleek thin one. The Intel one looks really snappy with all the applications opening really fast which is very impressive. Cinebench score is not so nice but I think this segment of people don't use applications like cinebench so it should be okay, but 500$ extra is the real deal breaker. But I think that's partly due to the premium form factor. Are there any other options from Tiger lake with a more budget friendly laptop? A little more bulky but not as bulky as the ThinkPad?
@MashITTech
@MashITTech 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, good question, the reason I used the T14 is because it is the best ryzen option I can find and I wanted to test ryzen vs tiger lake. And well noticed, the tiger lake is very snappy and the 1500 single core geek bench score confirms that too, it feels really snappy in day to day use. There will definitely be cheaper tiger lake laptops and I will get some in but they have only just started shipping

I most definitely will! I am checking lenovo every couple of days for them to release it. If you got a good deal on the T14 then it is still an excellent laptop and benefits from having a micro sd card, ethernet port and good TDP for the T14. What an amazing review man! Enjoyed it a lot! You get every point in the review so well, it’s a 28 min vid but feels like a 5 min vid. In my opinion thinkpad t14 is a better option. The dell feels exactly like a macbook for windows and the thinkpad is like a workstation which is what I prefer getting a laptop. Just imagine a laptop with the premium details on the xps, like his screen quality and the 16:10 inside a thinkpad t14 chasis with the t14 keyboard and with the good termals that it gets in a heavy work load, using a ryzen plus a lot of connectors including thunderbolt (for me the thunderbolt is not a big deal but I mean just imagine the laptop), and also with a better optimititzation on the battery life (that it’s obvius that both models have already an awesome battery life, buy I mean imagine a little bit more), and just put a good optimized graphic card (adapted to a proper great cooler system) for all kind of big works that engineers or machine learning professional have to do and BOOM you can imagine my perfect laptop for productivity, maybe just add a little bit of premium material on the chasis and that for me is the perfect laptop for productivity tasks.

@jaspal singh It's been great. It's really quiet and I hardly ever notice the fan. The one time the fan was loud was when it installed some large updates at set up. Also the best panel available in Japan was a 300 nits touch panel, I was frustrated with no 400 nits option but it's been bright enough for me. Not sure why more people aren't drawn to the T14 over the T14s. The T14s with R7 has a growing reputation of thermal issues and being returned.

Glad you enjoyed it. In answer to your question, firstly you can always keep an eye on task manager (click performance tab, hover over cpu activity graph, right click then select “change graph to” logical processors) this will now show you which cores are being loaded. Now in general opening apps are single core so intel may feel slightly more snappy, anything that loads the system (video editing, cad, 3D design, gaming, compiling) will often use multiple cores and here ryzen gets the advantage. Hope this helps but let me know if this isn’t clear 👍

With general office work you will probably find the intel slightly more snappy (apps loading slightly quicker) but in all honesty unless you have the two machines side by side you won’t notice a difference both are really quick. One things that I've learned to appreciate with Lenovo is their overall reliability. This laptop is not only Mil STD 810g rated, I feel that Dell's have become rather buggy lately. The Dell XPS units we've got at my work as well as my partners Alienware frequently blue-screen, have issues with the GPU requiring reboots and other problems. Quite a few of the XPS machines also have charging issues. The Thinkpads I've used so far never had any troubles like these. My P53 hans't given me a single BSOD in months of usage and I rarely had to do a reboot because of issues.

@tomonabudget
@tomonabudget 3 жыл бұрын
@@MashITTech Agreed. The keyboards are one reason why I ignore consumer grade machines and Macs in particular (I can't stand that shallow input they have). I'm a software Engineer. While my laptop is mostly docked, when I do work on the go, it's so much nicer to have a keyboard that works. My only gripe with current Thinkpad keyboards is the layout around the Delete and Home buttons as this used to be better. A thing that I still highly appreciate is the spacing between F key groups on their better Laptops (my P53 for instance). Whenever a manufacturer puts them all together, It drives me nuts as I then start to mistype them as I use certain F keys frequently (F2 - rename and F5 - reload for the most part).

shame, I was hoping it was a dedicated 15w to cpu and maybe another 10w for GPU, it is going to be crippled otherwise! Maybe this is something Dell can tweak in a future BIOS then as the laptop is so quiet they could definitely increase fan speeds a bit (even if only on ULTRA performance mode)

@@MashITTech The only way to solve this is by removing power limits. You see, in synthetic iGPU benchmarks, Xe graphics are clearly better because they have much more power to work with, because the CPU isn't being used at all. But in gaming, CPU is also being utilized and there is much less power for iGPU. Trying doing this on 9310 2 in 1 because that one had higher power limits compared to 9310.

I bought the t14 R7 and so far love it - yes, the fans are on most of the time when doing work (but I blame Visual Studio for beeing bad :P), but they are quite and you can feel the heat blowing from the side, so you know they are doing something. For all those considering T14 - the touchpad sucks. And it sucks a lot - for starters, it's not smooth. I noticed that I can hear my finger moving on it. Also, it has weird palm rejection algorithm, which causes it to ignore super small movements - you are actually better of using the track point to move the cursor slightly the side. On top of that, you know how you can press the whole touchpad to click? You can do it only form half height down. When you finger is above half, you have to tap or use the button above. Does it bother me? Not at all, because I have all the ports I want to plug in a mouse. I also have Dell XPS 15 with Xeon on my desk, and oh boy, it's funny. In Dell the fans are like a vacuum cleaner, and they are blowing at the screen. Not to the side, not to the bottom - at the screen. And you can't even feel the heat going out! It is constantly at 95+ C, very hot to the touch on the chasis. But, the screen and touchpad are next level. Keyboard is meh, especially compared to ThinkPad. I would say, if your boss is paying, you can treat yourself with Dell with USB-C dongle with all the ports (350$ on top of the laptop) and a premium feeling. If you are buying a tool, that has to pay for itself and last, take T14. It's super lite, feels weirdly solid in hand especially with how lite it is. And you can run in on your phone charger under full load thanks to the Ryzen processors.

Good review. Ive gone Thinkpad all the way, after owning the XPS and surface pro 7and alot more in this range :) Although Realistically, the XPS should be compared to an X series Thinkpad, like an X13 AMD, X395, or more premium X1 Nano. with this comparison, it makes the Dell look so much more expensive than Thinkpads. This is not true. If you compare the XPS to a X1 Nano, the dell would seem cheaper. The Dell Comparison T14 is an Inspiron, not an XPS. your comparing apples to phone chargers :)

I think the issue with your gaming result might be due to the power limit for the intel cpu. It has been reported that the Xe GPU only beats Vega 8 when the power limit is 25W++. I notice that in your Dota 2 benchmark, the xps sits mostly at 15W. Also, the power of the R5 is not reported, thus I am not sure what power it is running at. It might be a great idea if you can download Ryzen Controller and fix the R5 power at the same 15W for comparison.
@MashITTech
@MashITTech 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think you are right, I was initially hoping that it was only showing cpu power but I think it’s package power! Let’s hope dell allow it to boost higher with a new BIOS as when using just cpu it sits at about 20w in cinebench
@quanlethienminh6002
@quanlethienminh6002 3 жыл бұрын
@@MashITTech Also, I noticed at the beginning of your total war benchmark, the intel CPU boosted to 30W++ and was able to outpace the R5 at these instances by 10-15%. However, consider that this is intel's top of the line vs AMD's 3rd tier (there is still the R7 in 4700u and R8 in 4800u which both scale much better at 25W++) and that intel is offering a hefty price mark-up and much worse multithread performance ... I do not think that Tiger Lake can be said to be a worthy opponent for Renoir. Rumor has it that AMD is going to release a refresh of Renoir next year with a 30% boost to graphic power, not to mention the brand new Cezanne, which will decimate the CPU performance side. I think that the only way intel wins is that somehow no company put the AMD CPUs in equivalently nice chasses :(

Also, tiny case, probably three times less volume that of T14. Even if cooling systems are equal (which I doubt) the T14 has more mass to pull the heat to. And to be realistic - if you want to play games on ultrabook you can always connect eGPU (even buy a used one for half of the price) to the TB3 port of an Intel-based laptop (may change in the future, when AMD-based laptops with Thunderbolt support arrive). Which will help with CPU performance as well. by providing more power to the CPU, because you won't be using iGPU. And even help with heat dissipation, greatly, because eGPU will generate heat outside of the laptop's case.

I did not hold onto this machine for more than half an hour before rejecting it and starting a return, despite the fact that this is my favorite laptop currently on the market. Why? Bad quality control. My charging light (The light below the trackpad that indicates charging) was crooked, but not loose, as if it was manufactured that way, and there was a scuff and tiny dent in the bottom left-hand corner of the lid. There was no damage to the shipping box and everything seemed to be packed very, very well. Another minor thing, the Intel stickers came more crooked than I have ever seen on a laptop, though personally I don't think that matters because I was intending to remove them anyway. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth. This just isn't the low level of QA I expect from a Windows laptop by Dell that costs MacBook Pro money. I am not exchanging. Honestly I had a similar experience with my XPS 9500. When I got it, right out of the box, it had battery issues, (like, 2 hours despite running on the igpu) trackpad issues, (despite them claiming to be fixed) performance issues, (mishandling of the igpu to dgpu, with the igpu not able to handle moving tabs around on the desktop) fan noise issues, (Loud fans because of roaring + weak igpu, maybe even coil whine) Very loud fans on constantly, despite nothing running, and just overall a bad device. I also got mine early, but about 6 days. It still had good performance on when I needed it, (it could run minecraft 4K 60fps with minimal stuttering, although I’d run it at 2K anyways) but overall, it was really rough. I don’t want to push anyone away, as I’m sure this is a lemon, but man, what a huge disappointment. After sending it back, I’m buying the 9310 and upgrading my old PC. You're really comparing that which isn't comparable. The Dell XPS 13 is a computer for those who wants the slimmest computer experience. Its volume is way less than the ThinkPad, therefore the cooling is much worse, therefore the sustained performance will be lesser. And again, no purchaser of the Dell XPS in his right mind is here to game. The ThinkPad is a low cost thinkpad, eg crap screen, 16:9 instead of 16:10/4:3, aka arguably far worse for working. IMO the Asus Zephyrus G14 is better than this ThinkPad in almost all ways. However, I do agree with you in hoping brands will bring more and more high end Ryzen laptops, since Intel is not competitive anymore in the more CPU oriented workloads.

The right side of the device, near the fan exhaust, gets pretty warm when under load while charging, more than the 3500U. However for daily operation it stays cool and the fan rarely activates at all. It's really incredible the horsepower they managed to squeeze in a 13" thin and light. Haha that’s ok, I am still new to this so learning on the go, any feedback is taken on board. The games I used I chose because I thought they would play well on both machines (ie esports titles) I didn’t think about the fact the my may be cpu heavy. Next time I will try and pick a better spread

Intel is releasing 8 core tiger lake. I find people not recognizing how significant the single core performance of tiger lake is humorous. It outperforms the 10900k in single core. When they release a 8 core 16 thread part @45 Watts it will beat a 9900k and probably a 10700k in a laptop with 1/2 the power usage. They could literally release 65watt parts that could be desktop parts. These are fantastic chips.

Yes, I did mention the single core score on the geek bench cpu benchmark. 1500 is more than my iMac's 10th gen 8 core cpu. It certainly makes the laptop feel snappy and opening apps is really quick. As I mentioned when comparing the review, the intel is definitely better for general use whereas the Ryzen is better of you are constantly loading all the cores.

Let's not get too hyped. Your 8 core 16 thread parts are going to be Comet Lake (desktop) chips. Yields are not very good on 10nm for Intel to get those kinds of SKUs to mobile just yet. All the while, AMD has already answered to Tiger Lake's performance. Tiger Lake itself is a response to the ryzen 5000 series (really good IPC [single core, if you will] chips). 5000 mobile will be available either this month or next which will slaughter current Tiger Lake offerings (benchmarks already available). Tiger lake is good, don't get me wrong, but it is not revolutionary by any means.

You've titled this video with emphasis on the Intel vs. AMD processors, but then you spend quite a bit of time doing a more complete comparison between the two machine which are not in the same class. It's a mismatch. Thinkpad T-Series models are not price or performance equivalent of Dell XPS models. The T-Series is made with business productivity application in mind; it's the -X Series- X1 Series Thinkpads are comparable to "Premium" laptops from other manufacturers. An overall comparison of machines in the same class would have been between the Dell laptop and an X1 Carbon. You make some vague reference to the fact that the machines are different, but there's a reason why at least one of your commenters writes that "Thinkpads" are -- categorically -- "Dinosaurs"; because that's the impression you're making with your comparison between a "Premium" offering and a business laptop that's the equivalent of a Dell Inspiron, not an XPS model.

You make a good point but the reason I selected this laptop is I feel it is one of the most premium ryzen thin and light laptops. If they made an x1 carbon ryzen edition I would have definitely used that. My hope is that companies will realise the success of the ryzen processors from this generation and make more premium ryzen laptops next gen. maybe I should have spent less time comparing the actual laptops but I felt it was the state of the market and would be of interest

@@MashITTech I totally get why it had to be a T-14 for sake of the processor comparison. From the perspective of a Thinkpad owner, it's been interesting to see how often comparisons between various Thinkpads and other laptops are not like-for-like for one reason or another. Even when the machines are the same class, it'll be something like comparing last generation X1-Extreme with (Intel 9th gen CPU) vs. current generation XPS 15 (with 10th gen CPU). People are confused by Thinkpads because they're a discreet product line that runs parallel to Lenovo's various other laptop lines. With entry-level Thinkpads, workstation Thinkpads, "Premium utrabook" Thinkpads , all of which all have the same basic look but which have equivalents to machines from 4 or 5 Dell or HP product lines, it's not all that easy to know what Thinkpad is a good match against something from another brand. I hope you'll decide to do an overall comparison between the XPS 13 and the upcoming Thinkpad X1 Nano.

Definitely, I am checking Lenovo regularly for a U.K. release! I am really considering actually keeping it for myself if it as good as it looks (although I will miss the legacy ports)

I mean the XPS 9310 is better in every single way to the Thinkpad T14 except in the internals department. I've used both the Thinkpad X13 (very similar to the T14) and an XPS 9300 and the Dell is hands down a much better and nicer looking laptop, as you pointed out even the battery life and display is better too!

Yes I certainly agree with you. The only thing for me is the ports! I really miss not having usb 3. I know I need to embrace the future but it seems to be taking too long for companies to move peripherals over to the c connector!

@@MashITTech Yeah the lack of ports are annoying, but I feel that the ultra-portability of the XPS 13 means you're more likely to use it on the go and on battery power and without any accessories. The ThinkPad on the other hand being heavier is more naturally suited to being on a desk than using it more like a tablet, especially as it's got more workstation oriented hardware :)
