11:57 The Titan combines the design lessons of the Intrepid, Luna, and Crossfield (The Titan-Class was introduced after the re-discovery of Yard 39, which saw the Klingon War era designs updated for the 25th Century, and the declassification of the USS Discovery due to J'Ula and her Mycelial Weapon.)

That blue sensor pod is perhaps a bit of a gimmick, but it is tied to the ship's gameplay mechanic. Science Destroyers in STO are hybrid ships. By default they are a science vessel, the Titan has it's pod lit blue in this mode. These ships can enter a tactical mode which brings more offensive and defensive systems online while taking some of the science systems offline. The pod in the Titan turns red in this mode.

@STOEmma
@STOEmma 3 жыл бұрын
@@sardonicspartan9343 No, I don't think it does, but personally I like it. The good thing about STO though is that if you don't like that sensor pod, you can swap it out with the Luna's sensor pod or one of the other sensor pods that family of ships have. They all have had the game mechanic of changing light colors depending on the mode added to them, and they're much more subtle than the Titan's sensor pod light.

Impulse is not a thrust based drive. The impulse we see is merely exhaust of subatomic particles generated by the drive. Impulse grabs on to the fabric of space and pulls the ship around. It is linked to the inertial damping system which works in a similar way internal to the ship.

I love the translucent pod. It looks like a combination between an arboretum and an observatory--maybe its both, along with having some sort of specialized sensor equipment that needs that kind of material. I don't mind the glowy sensor pod. It is probably modular and can be swapped out for a weapons pod, tractor beam array (for salvage operations), Storage/supply lander, or other specialized equipment (like the Oberth, Nebula, and Miranda). I don't mind the glowy bits either. Even the TOS enterprise had a glowy sensor array on the underside of the saucer. This just looks like a bigger and more advanced version of that. I also would like to have those nacelles articulate down for entering warp. That would enhance the design. Otherwise I like it a lot.

It's like if the Discovery existed in an alternate reality as an Admiral-rank classified vessel and was mixed with the Intrepid, especially from the front. The thick nacelle pylons, deflector dish, straight-line orientation of the nacelles and pylons, and styling of the nacelles are very Discover/Crossfield-like, but it also loses some of what made the Luna-class Titan an elegant vessel. I'm not sure what the overhead "pod" is supposed to be, because the front looks like either a deflector dish or uniquely designed weapon

I'm sure I'm in the minority... but I've never really liked the Luna Class design - I'm not fond of the lumpy primary hull (the pontoons), the "runway" leading to the shuttlebay seems a bit odd, the curvy pylons have always looked a bit odd to my eye, and the Nav-deflector looked too weedy. This STO Titan Class pleases me a lot more. If Eaglemoss ever do a model of this, I will make a couple of changes... I'd give it a different pod, and I'd angle the nacelles downwards on the pylons (at a diagonal angle), but keep the pylons as they are... horizontal.

I'm not going to defend the designation, but STO kind of established its own language of designations. - Science Vessels being less armed ships with stronger shields that mostly gain the upper hand with energy draining, creating spatial anomalies or supporting other vessels. Most STO players just sum it up to "space magic" - Escorts are paper tigers such as the defiant whom are light, nimble and generally overgunned - Cruisers are the big durable bruisers in space conflicts, and pack some support functionalities for their fleets Destroyers, as STO puts it, are cousins to escorts that pack about the same amount of firepower but are slightly less nimble in favor of durability. The 'Science Destroyers' came to exist 5+ years back when the storyline had the factions in STO gain access to a Dyson Sphere. Researching them had them do experiments where they reverse engineered the tech of the creators of the Dyson Sphere into new ships; henceforth called "Dyson Science Destroyers". They were like the 'Destroyers' the game had previously established, but had a mode switching feature where in tactical mode their deployed more weapons and had access to more offensive capabilities - and in Science mode, they rerouted powers to secondary deflectors and had access to better combat-oriented science capabilities. It was personally a type of ship I enjoyed to fly. A bit of a jack-of-all-trades-and-master-of-none; but the mode switching allowed me to tailor performance to the kind of gameplay I wanted. The Luna-class was previously designated a Reconnaissance Science Vessel. The Titan-class, though, is not a refit but a wholly new ship type inspired from the Luna. In STO's take on it, I figure that in order to make it special at the point we are, they wanted to give it a gimmick to make it stand out from other science ships, and they opted to make it a Science Destroyer. I was personally very happy with that choice. The original Dyson Science Destroyers visually transformed to show more cannons and compact more for combat, or unfurl its pieces more to reveal their secondary deflector. Samuel is correct to call the glowy blue dome on the Titan-class a gimmick: the default science mode shows as blue, and when in tactical mode, it turns red; but otherwise no change in the geometry.

I like it overall. IMHO the top of the pod should be dark gray or black instead of blue. I wish the nacelles angled down so they were more like the Luna class (and less like Discovery/Crossfield). I think "theoretically" if that cut-out was a large openable wall that a ship could dip its nose through an atmosphere curtain and evacuate or egress hundreds of people very quickly that would be a cool use for it - likewise if that was the main cargo input zone (a bit like the underside rear on the Excelsior class is) I'd be up for that too. As for the thing on the top It could be large long range sensor - as it's similar to a planetary sensor dome. But it could also be lots of other things - such as a particle synthesis device or a sensor for detecting cloaked ships. I like both versions mind one being 24th century and the other being 25th century in feel.

The Luna-class in STO originally launched under the category "Reconnaissance Science Vessel". It was a tactically leaning science vessel - could do the 'space magic' Startrek Online associates with science abilities (Tyken's Rifts, gravity wells, tachyon beams, etc...). Science vessels typically get stronger science-oriented powers, more power boosts to auxiliary systems, good shields... but a fairly small weapon loadout. We saw the Luna-class on launchday, but it's spent about 10 years not being remastered and updated. Lower Decks was the excuse for it. However, by then, we choices for science ships had expanded and I supposed Cryptic Studios needed some way of making it stand out from the crowd. Around STO's fourth anniversary, they'd unveiled a new type of ship that was reverse engineered from Dyson Sphere tech that came to be called as "Dyson Science Destroyers". They took the basic qualities of destroyers - which was a favorable weapon loadout along with some nimbleness and toughness, and mixed it in with the equipment slots of a science vessel. They also included a mode switching gimmick where you could be in science mode and have power in your secondary deflector; or go tactical and bring online extra weapons. It wasn't the best at both jobs, but the versatility of being able to tweak your desired playstyle/capabilities was fun (for me, anyways). When the 2410 version of the "Luna" was to come out, it'd been a long time since an updated "Science Destroyer" had been made widely available... so I figure the Titan-class was it. So, yup, it's an hybrid Science vessel / Destroyer, and "Science Destroyer" was how they chose to put it.

Science Destroyer is more a videogame parlance thing. Quoting from the Startrek Online wiki: Science Destroyers are a type of starship. A combination of Science Vessel and Destroyer, they possess the attributes of both: like standard Destroyers, they have seven weapon slots are always able to utilize Dual Cannons, though as Science Vessels they tend to have more Science consoles than Tactical ones. They possess three device slots, as is standard for both types of ship. Additionally, these vessels come with the ability to function in two different modes that offer the capabilities of each albeit only one at a time. In Science Mode, they have all the abilities of a Science Vessel, able to utilize built-in Sensor Analysis and Subsystem Targeting, as well as a Secondary Deflector slot, while having access to +15 Auxiliary Power and higher Shield Capacity. This is the default mode, and gives access to a Commander Science Bridge Officer ability. In Tactical Mode, the Science Vessel abilities are replaced with Tactical-focused ones: the ship is able to utilize its Experimental Weapon slot, while having access to +15 Weapons Power and higher maneuverability in the form of Flight Speed, Turn Rate and Inertia Rating. In this mode, the ship has access to a Commander Tactical Bridge Officer ability.

I don't like how the impulse engines are angled! & the fact that 1 single engine array should be more than enough to drive the ship! But, you have 2 engine arrays! Sure you could make it 1 bigger engine array (4 instead of the standard 3, for starships), & make the ship that much better & faster in sub-light speeds! & give the ship more room for personal & cargo!

Sam takes these fake starships and trying to rationalize how they work too seriously (and in multiple episodes, ends up smugly insulting various official designers whom he doesn't know personally). The first and most important aspect of design of all fictional spaceships, including bloody Star Trek, is to *MAKE IT LOOK COOL*. They make up everything about how they think it might work later, and the shows' writers are totally free to contradict whatever tech consultants said in service of entertainment.

"it looks like a Discovery variant" well, that's because it _is._ they took the basic shape of the Disco and found that the Luna class closely matches the dimensions, so they give us something that has visual cues of both. since it has a clear Disco heritage, this means this ship belongs in the Prime timeline, not in the Roddenberry timeline the original USS Titan is a part of.

Or the concept artist simply wanted to inspire himself of a bird in a dive, and the rest is just a resemblance. twitter.com/sandman979/status/1329305599721361408 Some of the best shapes are in nature. If it happens to look like a 'better take on Discovery', so much the better.

@@zoberraz don't let the artist's tweet dismiss your intuition, Fred. the ship _is_ a Titan mask over a Glenn iteration Crossfield frame, but this design of the Titan class still has a strong visual relation to the Luna class, so what they did was pretty clever and i have to give them credit for that. almost balances the 'work' they did on the Gagarin class, where they took a Walker class, stripped off some of the ventral body and just flipped it over. i wanted to love that ship, honestly, but i cannot ever 'unsee' it being upside down. meh, personal hang-up.

The STO version looks older, blockier, less refined to me. You're right, it does look like it's been turned into Discovery. That would explain why I dislike it.

Science Destroyer? Is that supposed to be a parody of the Battlehilton?
@zoberraz
@zoberraz 3 жыл бұрын
Nope. It's a two word summation of game developpers trying to explain "It's an hybrid between a science vessel and a destroyer". Besides, in Startrek Online, it's common to have three variants of a same ship designation, each variant having equipment slot priorities tied to a certain profession. For example "Tactical cruiser", "Science Cruiser" and "Operations Cruiser" are designations tied to the Odyssey-class (STO flagship, which Trekyard covered in a video). So, in STO, seeing "Science Destroyer" is a pretty easy way of understanding that "oh, it's a destroyer, but it equips lots of science gear". Not that your reaction is uncommon.
