Turkey to Bristol: Day 2. The Thunderbird vs THE APOCALYPSE in Greece.
I know, what did I expect? Planning an almost 3000 mile motorbike ride going north through Europe in November was a bit of a gamble. What I didn't expect was some of the worst rain and storm weather I have ever seen, it was quite apocalyptic. The heavens opened and everything came at me. You've got to dig deep and keep going when it gets like this - solo riding is just like that, it's down to you and your resolve. I must admit I did wonder why the heck I was doing this a couple of times (especially when the bike got flooded and stalled at the top of a mountain) - and it was only day 2!
By the end of the day, after over 600km, I felt like I'd accomplished something and that felt good. The hot shower was pretty nice too!

It's amazing how fast you learn stuff on road trips. I like to see a photo of day one vs the last day of a trip, go from a newbie to vetteran in a few days. Well done for doing it on an older bike. People think that if their bike isn't on finance it'll blow up.

It really is a steep learning curve. Looking forward to putting together a video all about the things I've learned along the way. I think the myth around "touring" bikes is really just that, a myth, Most bikes will make it around the world a couple of times for sure. The Thunderbird will go forever, it's a tank.

@@thebristolthunderbird for sure. I have done Norwich to Barcelona and back 2 up on a naked VFR so it's doable. I have a 1999 transalp now and it's a bit softer on my lower back.

Hi ,so glad to see your okay . I'd already seen the forecast for the area you will be riding , and when your bike stopped in that downpour I kept thinking water may have got into your sidestand switch auto cut out for motor when it's down,mine does it when washed! . So glad you got it going ❤ thunderbird and lightning love my thunderbird just as you do yours take care .kmd

It was completely mad. I'll check the sidestand switch thing, might be a way of protecting it, or disabling it? Thunderbird and Lightning, haha, I like that.

What a nightmare! I was willing you to turn off the lights and indicators when you were trying to start her under the bridge. You must have been utterly knackered by the time you arrived at the port.

I was done for, and that hotel room was the greatest place on earth when I arrived there. Very wet and windy 600km.

Oh come on, don´t be a sissy cos of a few raindrops (just kidding 🙂) - on my trip to Scotland in June this year I had perfect weather thru half of Europe. But the day I left my hotel in Folkestone torrential rain and high winds have been my travel companions to the very last day in Scotland / England. So I know exactly how you must have felt after this ride. However, that´s what riding a motorcycle is (also) about and you´ve accomplished something - you´ve stepped out of your comfort zone and made it - RESPECT! Stay safe and hope to see much more footage soon. PS: I´m a Triumph guy myself 🙂

Haha, thanks mate! Yea, you feel like you've entered the big boy leagues when you have ridden through the storms. Like you say, it's all part of it and it tells a great story. It's so funny how riding a motorbike can go from 'living the dream' to a complete nightmare in a few minutes. Can't keep me off the thing though. Love it. Stay safe my friend.

Thanks mate. Yea, it was one of those moments where you see yourself stuck on a mountain for a while with no solution. It always works out though, somehow.

One man and his pure will to succeed..., this was probably the southern end of storm Babet, or was it Ciaran, so be glad you were not in it's middle. When having trouble starting your bike, always select neutral gear and make sure you have everything electrical turned off eg; lights, USB devises and so on, then all the batterie power is utilated for starting, and prevents it from prematurly dying, giving you a longer shot at getting it going.

It was one of those moments when you feel like it's all about to go very wrong. Couldn't quite believe when it started again, even though it was on 2 cylinders and hopping like a rabbit! Yea, blue skies please.
