When people say that diesels all look the same. Tell them that Today, yes, they do look the same, but in the past, there were many different types, including Cowl units. Cowl Units & Cab Units, to me personally, are my favorite type of Diesel Locomotive. They have that complete uniformity all throughout, and they don’t have those Huge Radiators on those Thin little bodies, no, it’s all the same width throughout, and I love em for it. Also, when people say that Cowl Units look great with passenger trains, tell those same guys that they look good with freight as well. Although, like all locomotives, they have their upsides and their downsides, and the downside for Cowl Units is that you can’t see directly to the Rear of the Locomotive itself. A price has to be paid when it comes to looking good I suppose, in the world of different types of diesel locomotives.

Even brand new (like the ones I have) they will probably have cracked gears. Also, grease in gear towers may be shot.

Thanks for sharing this. I thought (through everything I have seen online), that you must use a 3 wire stay alive with ESU decoders. However, your video proves that the LaisDcc 2 wire works fine. Do you have any comments regarding the suggested requirement for a 3 wire say alive?

Canadian National better Keep their Cowl Units in service. They look better then the Utilitarian Freight Diesels with their GEVO styled Wide Cab noses and the narrow and thin body with Huge, Ugly, and Bloated radiators in the rear.

Don’t you need to wire the leds with additional LEDs? The EE in me says not to wire LEDs in parallel with a resistor

I figured is formula out just I don't know how to set up an entire spreadsheet like he did but I think you don't need to spreadsheet and just a piece of paper and a calculator. Basically its top speed desired divided by models actual top speed (50/55=90.9%), take that result and divide it by 255 (90.9% or .909/255=231.8) so you'd set it at CV5 max at 232. I hope that helps. Unfortunately the drop box link is dead but this should help you within reason.

I own a pair of later run versions with factory ESU V5 installed. The contact pads for the ditch lights were replaced with a JST plug which is honestly a pain in the ass with; would’ve been perfectly fine with the contact pads so the shell can separate easily with no effort

Absolutely correct about the Bachman non sound decoders. Bachman engines do have the ability to run pretty well, but they insist on putting those deplorable decoders in them. At least, they have the 8 pin plug, in them, & the DCC ready ones, also, which makes it easy to swap out. The balance issue, on the drivers, happens quite a lot, with steamers.I bought a Bachman 2-8-0, while back & a 4-8-2 mountain, & have put decent non sound decoders, in them, & they run beautifully, at slow speed. The decoder choice makes all the difference. Sorry for the late responce. I have seen this vid long ago, & thankyou. Cheers Michael NZ

How is it that a Chinese gevo has a 6000 HP Generator that works but the Gevos in the USA don’t?
@NitroFury
@NitroFury Жыл бұрын
Cause the ES59ACi/HXN5 Locomotives are powered by a GEVO-16 Prime Mover that can put out maximum power output of 6250 Horsepower, while the ones here in the US are power by a GEVO-12 Prime Mover that has a maximum power output of 4500 Horsepower.

4400hp is sufficient for most NA railroads especially on heavier coal trains that tend to use distributed power setup.

The same installation procedure should also apply to locomotives using the same chassis that some other Athearn models use (SD80MAC, SD70ACU, SD9043MAC). Models with deck mount ditch lights will have LEDs in the housing while those with pilot mounts will have the LEDs on a light board on the chassis, making 2 90-degree turns via light pipes but tend to be very dim because of the 20K ohm resistors on the stock 21MTC board
