Today, we're breaking diet culture!
-- A quick note as to why I wanted to make this video --
"You eat carbs and dairy??" My friend said this to me once with a tone of utter shock and horror as she watched me eat a bowl of mac n cheese. "How are you so lean?" she asked. I was at a loss for words. I didn't quite know how to explain that entirely eliminating any food groups is entirely unnecessary to achieve any sort of aesthetic goals. On top of that, carbs are actually helpful in reaching aesthetic goals because they make your workouts more effective. By the time I started explain that, she had practically stopped listening. Everything I was saying was flying in the face of the diet culture dogma that she had been internalizing for so long. So to her, I sounded crazy.
This is just one example of a time that my lack of adherence to diet culture has been questioned. People are repeatedly flabbergasted that you can be lean and still eat pizza, donuts, ice cream, carbs, dairy, fried foods, bread, etc.
But the TRUTH is that you CAN eat these things and still reach your aesthetic goals.
Diet culture has lied to you to sell you products and pills. Fear is an effective marketing tactic. If you can create a fear, you create an industry. Make carbs scary and you can suddenly sell millions of dollars of carb blocking pills, keto bars, and protein pasta.
And companies have been leveraging this for years to drive a profit.
I wanted to make this video to share my perspective on food and how I personally have found balance outside of all of the diet dogma. I wanted to use this as an opportunity to talk through how I have explored my own relationship with food, challenged conventional views, and found a place that makes me feel balanced and healthy. How I can eat to feel strong, and energetic, and vibrant. How I can feel good.
Did I have to eat only fear foods for a day to do this? No. But I also wanted to challenge myself to make sure I actually wouldn't feel guilty or scared of eating this way. I've never eaten this way before and I wasn't entirely sure how I would feel about it. I wanted to prove to myself that I actually am free of all of the fear and guilt around food.
And as it turns out, I felt no guilt or shame or fear eating this way. The only negatives to this was that my stomach was angry at me for about four days. I felt vaguely nauseous and had some stomach cramping for a while. (Which obviously is NOT ideal but that is a conversation for another day). So all in all, I won't be doing this again anytime soon but I hope it opens up some good discussion and helps some of you let go of some of the fear and shame and guilt you hold around food ❤️

It's so funny. Tracking actually helped me let go of some of my fear foods. I used to limit breads and bagels when I started my fitness journey (back in 2010/2011). I realized that ok a bagel has a lot of carbs, but so does oatmeal and a lot of other foods I was consuming. Now, nothing is off limits and I base my diet on how food makes me feel.

Yes! This is why I always say tracking can be a great tool that can HELP some people with their relationship with food. Anti-diet culture loves to hate on tracking macros but it can be so freeing for some people to finally understand what is actually in the food they're eating!

Same. I used to be deathly afraid of avocados, nuts, and peanut butter thinking that they're so high-calorie that they'll make me fat. When I started actually measuring and tracking them though, I realized they could totally fit into a healthy diet if I ate a reasonable portion and now I've actually been able to lose weight while eating those foods every day!

This truly is a fantastic video, there’s so much good advice here. “The reason you feel like you could eat endless chocolate cake, is because you tell yourself you can never have chocolate cake.” “When you don’t have these intense desires for these foods, caused by restriction, you can find the balance that actually make you feel good.” “Don’t wear hunger as a badge of honor”. Thanks so much! Maybe you could chop up some of these great phrases into KZfaq shorts? I love long videos but I feel you could reach way more people with your powerful “oneliners”. All the best!

Hi Marissa I just loved this video as I do all of your videos. It is so lovely to see a content creator (and i guess a fitness influencer ) do so much consistent good . Im a PT and nutrition coach myself and I regularly have directed many of my clients to your videos. I think the most instrumental point you make here is about CHOICE. I work with so many women who have deep routed fear and mistrust in food and before our work together they don't realise that although urges to purge feel inevitable we can take steps to diffuse that and our thoughts are what drive our choices and our actions. I just love your work here on youtube and I will continue to enjoy your channel and your explorations. With much love from Cee Fee here in the UK x

I love your videos and love the science you bring to your informational videos. I have followed others and have just been in a "diet" mentality as I follow along. I have been able to change my way of thinking through your videos. I dont crave foods like before. And the other day I woke up craving a coke, or so I thought. Have way through it, I still wasn't satisfied, then I decided to chug a big glass of water. I felt satisfied after that. For many years I would wake up wanting a soda that my mind went straight to thinking thats what I needed but my body was just asking for water. I realized I have some very bad habits that need to be addressed because they are more mentally than physical need. I keep watching you for knowledge because motivation does come and go and I can't rely on that. Thank you again for your videos. ❤️ You are doing amazing!

3 years of you helping me along my journey to detain all the diet culture in my brain, and becoming a healthier me! Great video timing as I go into my first bulk (with some nerves)! I have used diet cycles and taken breaks over this time, but this is the first time I’ve been in a headspace for surplus. Jan-Apr down 2% body fat and up 1lbs in muscle mass, but I think a surplus will be key to adding muscle fast (as my training, progressive overload, protein intake, sleep etc have been on point). I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of food more than I am afraid of losing control with food. I’m a chef, I love food, I wouldn’t have a profession if people didn’t love food and tested it solely as fuel. I just know that if I have that one little slip in control or that one bad day, one bite of that brownie will turn into me inhaling the whole container. It sucks.

I have a question… I plan on tracking my macros/ calories to figure out my maintenance calories. But I am a housekeeper for an estate and the chef prepares out lunches every work day. Active recovery and hydration 3 day yield 20 lbs up I'm shure mostly water weight but I'd estimate I'll have gained 3 to five lbs of muscle by the end of the active recovery week then rinse repeat but change up.

I came really late to this video although I am a sub and I am a little bit insecure about posting a message because the way I use your content is to be informed about how the body works with data and use that information in my own health journey (although I am not on a "fit" body type) and ease my mind around labels a lot of food have and habits. Its been now 2 years now that I improve a lot my relationship with my own body (I regularly do exercise 2-3 days a week, I try to include vegetables in my daily food, try to mix recommended options for junk food, etc..) and I am not even close on the expectation I have for my body however I can see the changes in ways I was not expecting (my legs are getting a shape I was not used to, my back and arms are starting to shrink). However this VERY TINY changes I am recognizing now is a 2 years journey (with weight fluctuating) but I look back and I can now really say I am finding my sustainable routine to keep this as a lifestyle and even though I can have periods of time in which I miss excersie or balanced food its way more easier to go back on track. I look up to you in the way of sustain a very healthy lifestyle with an excelent body type in a very conscious way, I am not sure if I can ever go there but I am really positive motivated by your content and a very unique and realistic way to find your own way of healthy lifestyle. Thank you very much for your work and effort on that

I'm almost under 200 pounds and I want to hit that 160-180 range. But I really messed up my diet at first. Does anybody know if she has a video about how to get into Reverse Dieting the right way, from losing over a hundred pounds within a year? I’ve noticed for me that is more of a bored eating or stress eating. If I’m going through that state, I plan with designated times to eat based with meal planning for my macros. If I do that for a week or so, I conquer the mental block. This works for me because I get that way when my brain is struggling with something else. I need small “wins” of control that reset my snacking to purposeful instead of escape.

@@MissFitAndNerdy I've worked through the cause (PTSD) and can eat most people under the table. LOL Getting in to strength training was essential in early recovery for me as I wanted to be strong more than I wanted to control my diet. So I turned the need for "control" (you're not in control) into a love for lifting heavy stuff.

I am not fearful of any foods and thoroughly enjoy my meals, rarely eat out because my own homemade meals are just more enjoyable. However, in the last 4 months I feel I have gained so much fat on my body and I don't think it is a coincidence that I started drinking wine again around the same time it began. So I cut the wine again for a week and didn't notice much of a change in my body. I realize it's not a quick fix or anything but my body holds water easily and when I cut alcohol it usually is very noticeable within just a couple of days. I wish I could tell someone what my full day of eating looks like and them analyze it and tell me where I am going wrong! or what is it that is keeping this weight on me! I know I need to be in a deficit but on a normal day I probably only consume 1500-1800 calories tops. WAh!!!!!!

Any tips on how to help waste mentality? I have 2 toddlers and I’ll eat all my food but then feel like I need to finish the food that my kids don’t eat so it doesn’t go to waste.

I have a 2 and 4 year old so I totally understand. I actually make a little less and have some healthy back up food should they ask for more eg. A fruit plate or yogurt for ‘dessert’. Also if you don’t already, get a compost bin so all food scraps don’t go to waste, but actually help the environment. I’m in Australia and our compost actually gets picked up by the weekly bin collection. So that definitely helps

Imo it's still a waste of food if your body didn't need the food but you ate it anyway. Once the food is already bought/prepped, it's not like putting the food in your stomach vs the trash makes any impact on the world whatsoever. I'd recommend saving the food for leftovers or start composting!

Can I do a reverse diet without lifting heavy? I would love to but at the moment I don't have access to the equipment needed to do so. I've been tracking my calories and turna out my maintenance calories are around 1550, and going down from there doesn't seem like a good or healthy idea.

I'm assuming that you want to gain some muscle weight. If so, 8 to 12 reps is generally best for this. There are a lot of body weight exercises that can stress the body. You can also try something that sprints and then working your legs. If you want to work your chest and triceps, push ups can work wonders. The further your hands are apart the more chest focused it is. Narrower hits the triceps more. Single legged squats and deadlifts are also very good. Pull ups are great for the back and most playgrounds have pullup bars if you don't have anything at home.

I'm not afraid of foods but I don't crave junk food either I haven't eaten junk food in 20 years because if it doesn't serve any purpose in my body I won't see it as food but what I was afraid of was eating lots of calories so maybe I didn't have a fear of food but I had a fear of calories but now I'm overcoming that fear, well I guess if I have to choose one food I can say I'm afraid of it would have to be fish because I don't know how to cook fish, if I can just boil fish and water that would be perfectly awesome and easy that's how I eat liver I just take the liver drop it in boiling water and cook it for 20 minutes, if I can cook fish the same way then I can overcome my fear of fish 😁😄

The reason why I am saying this is because any fear food challenge is incomplete without delicious Indian food such as aloo paratha with full fat makhan and a glass of lassi for breakfast, makki di roti with sarson ka saag for lunch and rajma chawal for dinner. I will take you along with me to India. This will be the real fear food challenge!!
