Heat wrapping the intake pipe to the exhaust will pre-heat the air, it’ll work the same way a carbureted car uses the exhaust to heat the intake air in cold weather. Very important however, make sure your fresh air intake is far away from your exhaust. A foot or two isn’t enough, the residual CO2 from the exhaust can easily get sucked into the intake and can slowly poison you. If you can wrap two foot of tubing that’ll be plenty to pre-heat the incoming air and give yourself at least 3 feet of gap between the ends of the intake and exhaust pipes.
@NathanielHatley4 жыл бұрын
To my understanding that intake is only being used for the combustion of the diesel fuel, the unit is sealed. The air for the van is just blown past the exterior of the unit and heated that way.
@JosephOlson-ld2td4 жыл бұрын
Wrong, that is combustion intake and exhaust > heat exchanger recirculated cabin air > best recovery is concentric, like water heaters use
@jannepo4 жыл бұрын
At -30C below there is almost no humidity in the air, therefore the frost problem you encountered is caused by the exhaust being too close the intake. Exhaust contains water. When you burn 1 liter of kerosene, you create 1,1 liters of water or 1800 liters of water vapour. Plenty enough to create a freezing problem to intake if there is no wind.
@rob00brown4 жыл бұрын
Cold air is more dense and contains more O2 for combustion.

One thing to keep in mind if you are going to try pre-heating the intake air, these units require a certain amount of cooling, or else they will run too hot and lead to a shortened life, so sucking in hot air is not necessarily a good thing. This is also why the literature recommends keeping all tubing as short as possible with minimal bends, if the airflow is restricted (either inside air or out) they will run hot (but often not enough to trip the safety) and lead to an earlier failure. There are a lot of videos online of people trying to scavenge waste heat using all sorts of methods, but few take into account the affect that has on the heater's own cooling needs.
