Phelous made a similar point in one of his Defenders of the realm videos. "The Scorpion backstory is horribly off as Scorpion is usually a pretty honorable character despite him looking evil. That's actually one of the reasons I always found Scorpion to be an interesting character because by all accounts you'd think he'd be a bad guy but he's really more of the antihero vigilante type." There was also a moment in Scorpion's Revenge when Johnny thought Scorpion was evil based on his looks.

And these are John Tobias characters that NetherRealm ruined he would have never made Sindel evil and a gold digger.

Netherrealm's takeover of the story is where nuance goes to die; Sindel's juxtaposition of looking sinister and being a devoted mother and protector of her realm and family was the point of why her character was so awesome!

What's unfortunate is the ruined subversion. The fact she looked evil but turned out good is a fun bait n' switch. The whole point of a subversion with a character design is it works on your preconceived notions of a character than actively challenges it in order to surprise you.

If anything, to save face, the PR lady should've said that the reason Sindel is evil is because the Shang Tsung of MK9's timeline was still a part of her. It wouldn't have been much but it would've better than what she and many other staff members said for justification of Sindel's unecessary heel turn.

As a Sindel main who always loved the character I'm so grateful for snake. From day one of the retcon he's been defending the real Sindel, and if she's good in Mk1 I think that at least 40% of the credit is all to him. Since I was a kid Sindel has been probably my favorite videogame character period, so is nice to see people who cares much for the character as I do.

It doesn’t just work for an evil person looking like a good person, a good person can look evil but still be good.

Does anyone making this argument realize how many characters there are, not just in MK but overall, that look evil but aren't and vice versa? OG Bioware games, Kotor 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, Hitman, Fire Emblem, The Witcher, Naughty Dog games (the good ones) and so on. Talar in Witcher 1 screams "shady asshole" but he isn't at all, while Atton from Kotor 2... well I don't want to spoil, but let's say he's not at all what you might expect from a guy like him. Which is great, it made the revelations about them that much more effective, while making Twindel look evil and being evil makes her more generic than anything. And I do not understand why anyone would be for making the franchise and characters they're a fan of less interesting.

The thing is it doesn't work story wise. The only way it works is that Sindel MUST be still brainwashed. She simply believes she killed Jerrod as a way of making her brainwashing convincing but everything is still as we always knew it and it has not been contradicted. After all we are talking about magic and nonsense here. Even if you take mostly MK11. Her entire 'fake' relationship with Kitana where she is that 'caring benevolent mother' wouldn't work if she wasn't actually like that as far as Kitana was concerned. If she were actually evil the whole time and putting on an act for Kitana and Jerrod while pining for a stronger husband then how was she killed? Originally she committed suicide so that she could protect Earthrealm from Edenia's fate but if she was evil all along it doesn't work. Shao Kahn originally needed her revived and brainwashed as a way around the ward and this still holds true in the remake and original timeline, just Quan Chi does it in the new one, Shang Tsung originally. Further Sindel's original look/moveset in MK3 was done that way because she believed she was the 'evil queen'. Once she knew otherwise, maybe certain things about it stuck like her preference in style or whatever and if you have powers like that are you really going to not use them because people might think you are evil when you are one of the most benevolent characters out there? Sindel was the characterization of 'Don't judge a book by its cover' and Netherrealm are like "nah we be shallow".

Get yourself a man who understands and loves you like Snake loves Sindel.

For an M rated game, presumably MADE with an adult player base in mind, that reasoning for Sindel being written to match her "evil" appearance is childish, grade school. I hated the retcon with a burning passion. I am glad that they went with good Sindel in MK1.

While I think accusing Brownback of personally changing the lore is stupid they definitely deserved the criticism for their comment as that was a monumentally bad take, & showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the character.
