I share your love for this book and it’s DEFINITELY my best read of 2024 so far. We just returned from a trip to Alaska, and read the book in preparation for the trip. It really enriched my understanding of the geography and history of this amazing place. I listened on audio but followed up with the purchase of a hardback book so that I can reread it and annotate and study the maps. The only other Michener I have read was Chesapeake-- it was good, too, but Alaska outshines it IMHO.

You will like Remarkably bright creatures is my prediction. Ek on one hundred years- if you like it tell me why. I tried even buddy reading it and we both didn’t really follow or get it- even with the cliff notes- I dnf half way. I am open to it being explained to me as the magical realism in that one is just over this girls head 🤣 a book club is maybe the way to go. I loved Book Lovers! I did like The Winners but not as much as I was hoping. Probably more than most people though. I think reading just Beartown by itself is likely the way to go.

Yay! You read A Suitable Boy all the way through! One of my top ten faves of my life. I love your reads this month (although I guess I'm not a western girl either lol). Thanks for all of your book videos! It keeps me excited to read even when my motivation is low. I just finished Sociopath by Patric Gagne on audio and it was really good-- read by the author. It's a memoir. There is one disturbing animal cruelty scene that almost made me stop though. For lighter reading, I'm reading Liane Moriarty's The Hypnotist's Love Story. I usually read heavy reads, so this is way different. Can't wait until your next video!

I 100% agree with your review. This was my first KH book (read for a book club), and I didn't care for it at all. The writing was repetitive and had a lot of tell vs show. It was so man-centered for a book that was supposed to be about women. The characters were flat and needed to be fleshed out more. I disliked Frankie as a protagonist. I absolutely hated the Insta-love romances. I'll stop there, though I could go on. This book could have been so much more, but it missed the mark for me. I did not enjoy my reading experience, and I don't plan to read another book by her.

I liked the book a lot and recommend it all around so I was curious to see why you didnt like it. The review is fascinating to watch because I just feel we were focused on completely different aspects of the story. For me the whole time was the focus on Frankie‘s psyche and how her mind dealt with trauma, romance, healing, disenchantment, family relationships, friend relationships, sense of identity and motivation to keep going… The things you mentioned - yeah they are there - but for me those are completely overshadowed by the amazing story of the human mind and how life can transform it. From that perspective, the emotional impact and character development (albeit for only one single character) were phenomenal for me. So thats why I personally liked the book :) But youre right, thats why literature is so great - we get to discuss over it and noones opinion is right or wrong.
