What bottom bracket did you use? The original?

I got a Shimano un 300 square taper bb. The same specs as the original - which I cannot recall, I think it was a 73mm width but measure the shell you can get both 68mm and 73mm. You will also need to know the overall width of the square taper - I think mine was 113mm. -but again read it off your bb or measure the old one they come in anything from 108mm to 122mm. The un300 bb is the better of the two square taper options. They are not very expensive. The cranks were square taper.

The tyres are 26x2.1. The wheels are the originals they had a Shimano 7 speed hub which I removed and put an 8/9/10 hub on. I removed one of the spacers on the other side of the axle to make it all fit as the 7 speed hub is 5mm shorter then the 8 speed.

@JohnPilling25
@JohnPilling25 2 ай бұрын
Go for it - it was very straight forward to do. Just go microShift advent X for the rear derailleur, trigger shifter and cassette. If you have a square taper bb then you can get cranks with 104bcd 4 arms relatively cheap - if the bb is shot then change to Shimano hollow tech II and get a new external bb and cranks with 4 arm 104bcd - that will be the most expensive bit - 104bcd chainrings cover all the way from 30T tonway beyond 50T in 2 T increments and are cheap and easy to get. I've used Deckas brand and they work very well and haven't worn out - I'm currently trying to destroy them in the Pyrenees. Brakes - while rim v-brakes will work with decent pads - koolstop - discs are better - the cheapest Shimano brake set will do you just fine. - anything else is gravy

Hi my friend, I myself have bought a 2006 Specialized XC Pro, someone has repainted it, and it was done beautifully except for the fact that the paint has chipped off where the shocks are mounted and the frame moves inward. Do you know of any way to fix this, even if only crudely? I would hate for more paint to chip off.

I'm away cycling in the Pyrenees for a couple of months. I'll look it up when I get back, but I think the travel and shock length were almost identical to the original shock which is no longer made - I think 2" of travel - can't remember the length off the top of my head, 7.5" eye to eye I think. The original shock I believe was 7.25" eye to eye and 2.25" travel. Glad you liked the build.

Beautiful build, should cut the steerer tube down, there is going to be alot of leverage on that head tube, and head tube bearings, from side to side motion during pedaling, specially when standing up pedaling. Also grease should be used on suspension pivot points to prevent corrosion( sealed bearing or not ) water, and grime will work it's way in, lock tight( blue ) on suspension bolts, brake mounting bolts to prevent bolts from loosening up during trail riding over rough surfaces. Just a few tips I learned over the 25 years of riding, and wrenching on my own bikes. Beautiful bike, well done, love the color, and parts spec.

What brand of bottom bracket facing/chasing tool is that?

Lifeline pro. I got it from chain reaction cycles online about a year ago. They were having a massive sale. The tool works very well. After chasing the threads in old frames the new bottom brackets just thread in easily. It is not for cutting new threads.

Hi, I’m just working out how to convert my 2012 cross into gravel 😊 I was just looking at the folks you brought. From axle to crown is 398mm, the suspension folk is 510mm. I noticed in another comment you recommended not to drop to much otherwise you’ll be facing down wards! How does 112mm difference feel to you? I can’t get the folks you recommend in uk 🇬🇧 Found some others but the come in 425mm, 445 or 475 Just not sure which ones to go with! Thanks
@JohnPilling25
@JohnPilling25 7 ай бұрын
I just measured mine - the carbon forks are 420mm axle to the crown race. - the suspension forks are 470mm - but compress an additional 20mm when sitting on the bike with my hands on the bars in a riding position - so 450mm when moving. I found the frame itself too small for me so the seat post was raised and I had a huge stack of spacers on the steerer post to get a comfortable position - in the end I gave up as too much pressure on my wrists and hands as I was too much facing down as you said. I ended up putting suspension forks from a Kona dew fs hybrid on as the original forks on the Crosstrail were completely rusted out/seized and added a cyc e-bike motor so my wife could use it for shopping. (Check my later video for details). I will be posting an overview of my Kona gravel conversion soon - that's where the Soma forks ended up. I too have noticed that some parts just aren't available in the UK. I live at my family's home in the Isle of Man for about 4 to 5 months a year. Fortunately I have friends in France where I stay for a month or so as I travel back and forth UK to US and get stuff from Germany delivered to their address. It's silly but the German and Dutch shops will only deliver within the EU -😡 another Brexit Benefit 👎🏻. I'd try and work out what riding position you want - put a 26" wheel in the suspension fork and check that position as it will lower the front end by 25mm

Hi Are they the original wheels? Id like to convert mine to 9 speed
@JohnPilling25
@JohnPilling25 8 ай бұрын
Yes they re the original wheels. If yours is an 8 speed you can just put a 9 or 10 speed cassette on. You'll need a new shifter or a friction shifter. Just make sure that the derailleur will go under the biggest ring on the cassette otherwise you'll need a derailleur extender that lowers the mounting point of the derailleur so that the chain will go under the lowest gear. If it's a 7 speed cassette you will need to remove the spline and replace it with an 8/9/10 speed one.
