Can ANYTHING make Spam taste better?? That's the question I've tried to answer for you today folks, with 3 bizarre Spam recipes which use fried Spam in the hopes of making it palatable!
If you want to laugh at me and Stuart Ashen trying more Spam, check out our Spam Fiesta Peach Cups video here: • Barry & @ashens Try Re...
And for more Barry Tries: • Barry Tries Playlist
My Patreons in the PVC have actually seen me try fried spam before, so if you want to be among them, check out the link here: / mrbarrylewis
Spam Fries Ingredients
1 tin of Spam
60g (0.5 cup) flour
60g (0.5 cup) panko breadcrumbs
2 eggs
Spam Fries Recipe
Surely you can’t go wrong with what’s basically a crispy, fried fritter?
Start by heating up the oil in your fryer.
While that warms up, get your breading station set up. Whisk up the eggs in one bowl, then measure out the panko breadcrumbs and flour into separate bowls or plates.
Slice your Spam into chunky slices then chop each one into three to create your “fries”. Then prepare to dunk! My top tip here is to keep one hand dry and one hand wet so you don’t end up in a sticky soggy mess! Cover one Spam fry in flour first, then dip in the egg, then shaking off any egg-cess, coat it in the panko breadcrumbs. Set it aside while you do the rest, and don’t forget the system!
Fry for around 3 to 4 minutes until they’re a gorgeous crunchy golden brown. The heat and crunch disguise that odd gelatinous cat food sort of texture, and if you dip it in ketchup, it covers up the flavour too - I don’t hate it!
Spam Sushi (Spam Musubi) Ingredients
1 tin of Spam
800g (4 cups) cooked sushi rice
2 tsp soy sauce
2 tbsp sugar
60ml (0.25 cup) water
Spam Sushi (Spam Musubi) Recipe
First up wash your rice until the water is clear, but don’t get obsessed with it! Stick it in a covered pan with water on the hob and bring it to a simmer for about 10 minutes.
This step is optional, but while that’s cooking, mix up a little bit of sugar, salt and rice vinegar to season. If you’ve never flavoured your sushi rice before, this is game changing! Fold this through your rice when it’s cooked.
Slice your Spam into credit card sized pieces. Dissolve the sugar into the soy sauce then mix in the water.
Fry the Spam in a hot pan with oil for around 3 minutes on each side, and sprinkle each side of the Spam with a little sugar as it’s cooking to help it caramelise. Pour in the soy mixture and allow it to simmer with the Spam until it’s absorbed nearly all the liquid.
Cut your nori (sheets of seaweed) into strips so it will wrap around the Spam. Here’s another top tip! Wet your fingers then grab a clump of the rice and mould it together to match the shape of the Spam, then lay it on top. Time to wrap it! I placed the Spam and rice in the middle of the nori strip then fold it over, dampening the seal (bayaya) with wet fingers to keep it in place.
The taste of this was pretty nice with a sugary salty punch, but the texture was still a bit too wet compost for me in the Spam. Altogether though, not too bad!
Spam Hawaiian Burger Ingredients
1 tin of Spam
4 slices of tinned pineapple
1 red onion
Burger sauce
Lettuce
Brioche buns
Spam Hawaiian Burger Recipe
Now who knew that the Spam website has an absolute bounty of recipes?? This is one of them, so here it is if you want to try it!
Slice your Spam into thick, fat slices for this one - it’s a burger after all!
Heat up the pan and toast the bun first. While it’s toasting, roughly chop up the red onion and pineapple slices.
When the pan is free, chuck in the red onion, pineapple chunks and one of your chunky pieces of Spam. Let it caramelise then remove from the pan to build your burger.
I used burger sauce here and whacked a big dollop on, followed by the lettuce, the Spam burger “patty”, onions and pineapple chunks. This looks amazing and tastes remarkable - luckily the texture and flavour of the Spam is gone, apart from the saltiness!

The best Spam recipe is a Hawaiian one making a Spam fried rice & it has pineapple in it. It’s on the Spam website, though I brown the Spam (diced like pork in traditional fried rice, not big chunks) a bit more & brown the rice more as well, I up the amount of onions, replace the peas with large shreds or matchsticks of carrot & baby corn & finish it w/a bit of toasted sesame oil. Spam has always been nasty, but it used to be better (more hammier) than it is now. The trick with frying just plain Spam is thin slices.

Since texture is a sticking point I recommend crisping it up and putting it with something else like that musubi, fried rice, or soups. If you're ever back in the US, the SPAM museum is about an hour and a half from the MSP airport (Minnesota).

To easier make the "sushi spam" (also known as spam musubi) you can take the spam tin, line it with cling film and use that to pack the rice in, lay the spam on top, then pack it down and pull it out using the cling film. Make sure to cut the spam crosswise instead of top to bottom so it has the oval shape/rounded corners. The rice takes the shape of the spam and the spam tin and makes less of a mess on your countertop. You use the spam to push down the rice in the tin and form the shape as well as have something to wrap it up in for a bento or lunch box. You can even place it in the refrigerator until you eat to help it firm up more and to keep it firm.

Budae jjigae is a really good meal with spam and could be a video in itself since it's an east meets west kinds of dish. It was made in South Korea in '50s after the Korean War when many were given American rations including things like pork & beans, ham, hot dogs, spam, American processed sliced cheese and other western related food. The dish literally translates as to "Army base stew" and used those items as well as traditional Korean ones to make a hearty spicy Korean stew. Can't recommend it enough.

Its always funny to me when people get weirded or skeeved out by Spam... but then those same people will eat a hot dog or bologna, lol. Spam is pretty much like canned ham and has around 6 ingredients, meat and seasonings. If its a texture thing, I kinda get it but again... hot dogs or bologna, haha. Cheers, glad you liked the masubi.

An underrated ingredient for sure, especially as a pantry item that lasts for years, is fully cooked and (if you're in a situation where you must) ready to eat as-is, and can be used to make actually delicious things with a little bit of know-how.

Fun fact: Although debated as to where Spam Sushi was created, Musubi (what we call Spam Sushi) both are an American dish created after WW2. Musubi specifically, which Barry made a version of, was created in Hawaii during WW2 as another way to use all that Spam. I like Spam lightly fried in butter and that's the only way I've ever had it. I don't know how I'd like Spam Musubi.

The Spam "sushi" is actually Spam Musubi, and it's a pretty typical cheap food in Hawaii. Kinda like how a sausage roll would be for the UK or a gas station hot dog in the rest of the US. Basically Hawaii had a lot of Japanese immigrants (Many were survivors of the internment camps) and not a lot of money after WWII. So the people there needed a cheap, easy to make food. Spam was that food. And it combined with Japanese cuisine to make Spam Musubi.

When you open a can of spam, either remove both ends, or at least pierce a hole in the end you don't remove. When you're removing the spam from then can, this lets air in behind the product (I hesitate to call it 'meat'), and you don't form a vacuum behind it keeping it in the can.

I think something a lot of people seem to not understand is spawn isn't like old school hot dogs or American Bologna where you never know what might be in there, its 6 ingredients, the main being pork shoulder and ham meat. Its meant to be cooked and once cooled you can make it taste so good with just a few extra bits and bobs. It also isn't seasoned, except with to much salt, cooking it can cook out some of the salt, and add some other spices because there is none in there.

(Though it was through no fault on Barry, just me getting triggered by the time thing) Now if you'll excuse me, but I have to go and daydream about all the wonderful things on my bucket list that I will probably never get around to doing!

Spam reminds me of my chilhood when american goods were just becoming more common in groceries. I like to slice it really thin & then fry on a pan or using an air fryer without oil until crispy. Then serve in a sandwich, on noodles or with garlic rice with a sunny side up fried egg.

The Wolf Pits' candied Spam crack is crazy good. Diced spam fried up then coated in brown sugar. The sweet and salt is addictive.

I think this goes for a lot of food, but spam is something that can be genuinely delicious if it's prepared right. I mean, hardly anyone likes eating raw onion by itself but it is delicious in things, raw or cooked.
