So, long story. My grandma passed away in november, she left me like 50% of everything she had. My mom only got like 3%. With this, i inherited a house, & i’m the only one on the life insurance policy, sh-t like that.
well my mom is calling me selfish. i turn 18 in less then a week & i told her i will not let her & my siblings move into the house with me, & let her have the master bedroom etc. she got upset saying i don’t need an entire house to myself, i’m selfish, etc,
but she didn’t raise me, my grandma did. she’s never been there for me & she’s always treated me like sh-t, she’s been in and out of jail my entire life for d-ugs, & she abused me the 3 months i lived with her, & i don’t want that toxicity in my life lol.
Story 1:
AITA for not giving my mom part of my inheritance?
Story 2:
AITA for refusing to provide more than my obligation threshold to my parents?
Story 3:
AITA for not returning a family heirloom?
Story 4:
AITA for potentially damaging my brothers relationship with his sons over college tuition?

Listening to these stories about families pressuring inheritors makes me want to update my own final wishes. I might include a clause to protect my beneficiaries, stating they cannot gift any part of their inheritance to certain individuals. Have you ever thought about how you would structure your final wishes to protect your loved ones from similar pressures or disputes?

I love how the op just casually mentioned that they are 17 and engaged and literally no one in the comments even brought that up. I hope she protects herself against her boyfriend just in case he starts to feel entitled to her money and if they do get married, she gets that prenup.

As long as someone believes "forever" "never" and "always" can occur in a relationship they aren't mature enough for a lifetime commitment, imo. Not that you will ever convince them because their love is Forever, they would Never hurt each other and will Always find a way to make it work.

With the third story you're not in the wrong I get the feeling that your mother-in-law only feels comfortable with passing it down to the firstborn girls in the family not the first born child and the fact that your late wife may God Rest her soul gave it to your son who is her first born and your first born it makes perfect sense. My advice to you is simple tell your mother-in-law that your wife her daughter gave the ring to your son her son before she passed away and that's how it's going to stay if you constantly bring it up more and more then maybe you shouldn't see your grandson for a while and I will go no contact until you drop it. Problem solved plain and simple. If she can't handle that then maybe she doesn't see you as family to begin with or your son neither

Yeah my uncle helped me get a job and the rest of my family had a fit but I was the only person who went to his house and even spoke with him. He knew who cared for him and who did not. Christmas he gave cash to all of the kids. I was never allowed to open my cards in front of the other kids. His wife always had my card and she would give it to me and tell me not to open it in front of the other kids. They spoiled me but I took care of their yard and babysitting with my cousins their kids. I was like their big brother and we are still like brothers 45 years later.

Hearing theses stories about family pressuring people who inherit-makes me want to revise my own final wishes. With the last story, if I was op I would beg the brother to let me pay the kids tuition by saying “you supported me when I came out, one of the biggest and most terrifying choices I’ve even had to make in my life. Let me pay you back by supporting your kids so that there’s one less thing for you and your wife to worry about. I won’t give them so much that they can go party, but so that school and books are paid for. Please. It’s my one way to repay you for always being my brother.”. I don’t know if it would work, but at least that way it’s not a charity case but repaying his brother for something that can’t be easily converted into money.

OP wouldnt do it you can see from the tone of his post that he clearly has some unresolved issues with his brother. He intentionally undermines him in front of his adolescent children and displays clear disregard towards him and his decisions and it wasnt the first time either. He forcefully inserts himself into his nephews upbringing and throws a fit when meet with resistance. I would think that he probably lacks sense of purpose and is trying to fill the void. Following his logic next thing he should do is send his brothers wife on a vacation spa and give her some erotic lingerie to spice up their bedroom in hopes of maybe a new another nephew !

It seems to me that your mom wants the house to make yourself feel good and have a sense of stability and security. When in reality she never gave you that in your own childhood let alone physically mentally and emotionally abused you. My advice tell your mom to either cease and desist her demands be grateful for getting only 3% and not nothing at all and use that 3% to take care of your siblings and better herself or call the police and file a criminal restraining order and potentially call CPS to make sure they are out of your Mother's Hands. In addition I will also tell your family members who want your mom to come back into your life that either you stop doing that or I will cut you off as well. It's better for you to protect yourself than it is to an able somebody else who's been talking to you your entire life. Other than that you're not in the wrong

@@jascrandom9855 Not really. If CPS is involved the parents may have to take court ordered parenting classes but that's AFTER they're involved. CPS is overworked and the triage they must use puts priority on the really bad situations (as they should) . If there was another branch or something that could handle the smaller stuff it would be beneficial to everyone. Ex: "My ex isn't feeding my child well, they only get drive-thru food all week when they have the kids" Kid is not getting good nutrition, even though they're not being starved. It's not a CPS issue, but it is something that should be addressed.

Dad in the story sending "money home" sounds like my dad, he spent years sending large amounts of money without bothering to run any of the businesses/projects properly and hold ppl accountable so most of the money was stolen and used by greedy family members. I eventually went into working in finance and remember at 16 when I was learning the basics trying to point out why his approach wasn't working and he pretty much just said "that's just not how business works in...." so I gave up. My dad passed now a while back and I told my older half siblings at the time (from him not my mom) that they're welcome to them all. I'm not pouring more money down the drain and I honesty don't want to try to get them run properly, because I don't work by the "its family its ok" attitude, I want to know where every penny is going as that's the level of detail I go into with my day job and I'm not my Dad Also was an ego thing to as his other family managed to make things work he didn't, and also my mum was the one raising 4 of us here whilst he was dreaming of over there. OP not TA, her and the brother should only send the money directly to the mom of he's still sending it abroad to "look good" to his rich friends

I think heirlooms really depends on tradition. Like, in this case, fuck MIL. This tradition is old as hell and he's following it to a T. But like the story where the guy inherited a picture from his dead wife, which she got from her grandma (no other person had owned it), I also agree that the family is an asshole for wanting it back. There's no traditional rules set in place. It was his wife's, now it is his. If my grandma gives me one of her busted teapots and I die, I expect that teapot to still be with my husband, because she gave it to me.

I know I’m going to sound like an asshole, but honestly on the last story, he knows his brother is jealous about the money thing. The kids went crying to rich uncle basically knowing they would probably get a handout but better yet, they’re getting their entire tuition paid off. Is it nice having school paid off completely and starting life debt free? Yes. It doesn’t mean you have to butt in on your their family difficulties. Now you’ve made a strain between you and your brother, your brother will feel even less because brother paid for my children’s things, plus it wouldn’t surprise me if the nephews will keep looking at you as a cash cow. They need to learn the hardship of life. That includes debt.

Story 1 - OP NTA - You are NOT responsible for your mother and her children. She made her choices in life and has to live with them. Your grandma knew this and that's why she made sure that you had enough to give you a start in life. As for you being 17 (almost 18) and engaged... well honey at your age, everything seems like a fairy tale and the"we lived happily ever after" kind of mindset. When the time comes for you to get married, which I hope it is way AFTER you finish college in the future, I suggest that you get a PRENUP and DO NOT put your significant other's name on the Deed of the house. That is YOUR home left to you by your grandma and if God forbid you relationship with your SO doesn't work out you will lose nothing. Be smart with what you have and think with your HEAD instead of your HEART before making any financial decisions. Don't fall for the "if you really love me" followed by the "you don't trust me" BS. IF your boyfriend really loves you he will have no problem signing the prenup.

@@TheThreeFantastic so "your daddy is scared of his pride so you have to endure immense debt and struggles so your daddy feels better about not being able to provide you something most people can never afford to give their kids"? His brother should be extremely happy and grateful he has an opportunity for his kids to be given such a wonderful opportunity. I'd resent and never forgive my family if I had an opportunity like this and it was ruined because one of them had such a bloated ego they'd rather me struggle and suffer than have the most opportunities in life. I would never help them with any of my successes because they not only didn't help me achieve them, they stood in the way to feel better about not being able to be the one to give me the opportunity. By this logic if the whole family was wealthy the father should refuse to accept any inheritance or help because he didn't earn it himself and so forth. What's the difference whether he was the one to do it or not? What sort of pathetic failure would pull its own children down to its level out of jealousy and ego, and a weak and failed ego at that!?!? I hope the kids know the truth and get the money anyways!

This may be the situation where you might want to talk to him privately about everything that you wanted to do for your nephew's but because of his pride you couldn't do and now that they're getting ready to become adults you can do it whether your brother likes it or not. So you might want to prepare yourself for your brother to either go no contact with you or to pretty much say you can help but not completely control...... in addition I was also recommend that your brother go speak to a therapist because clearly this is going to damage his relationship with his sons if he goes too far

I say Nta rather than Nah considering while I understand the brothers annoyance that he wasn't able to pay more for their college he chose to let that get to his brain and take it out on the op when he should be taking it out on himself. Had I been in the brothers shoes I would've swallowed my pride and had a private talk with the op to thank them for helping my kids but that it sucks that I couldn't do that myself rather than just shit on the op because of my ego.

The last story is pretty sad, you'd expect parents to sacrifice themselves for their kids, but these would much rather be prideful than have their kids happy, which is pretty messed up, I feel like the kids should try to talk to the uncle behind their parents back and then just lie when the uncle takes them to disneyworld or other places, kids would be happy, parents would have their pride and the uncle would be happy that he's a good uncle

I am sorry but if the uncle pays for all their education those kids will think their parents are useless and also if the parents stop the uncle from paying, the kids will also hate their parents. To me, it sounds like the parents are not bad people and are not treating their children bad, they are just struggling financially, I know the uncle is trying to help, but he destroying the relationships, with his brother. It's also obvious the dad is jealous of the uncle, but I also think that the uncle is jealous of the brother's life.

Burh what?? It's a family ring let him wear it. His mom just passed away and the ring is one of the only things he has of her and you want op to take away? Really it's not about the money it's about the sentimental part of it. Also what do you mean until he comes of age? You really think that a person can't wear a ring until there 18+ or something really? Maybe op can make sure he puts it in a safe place when he's not wearing it but op shouldn't take it away and hide behind some age wall.

The kids going to college is not the issue. OP doesn't have and should NEVER have a say in how his brother is raising his kids. They are NOT OP's kids. OP is totally the A-hole, not even for what he says or wants to do but it is what he isn't saying. From reading his story and comments I would say OP is the jealous one of his brother's family because being gay means a harder path to parenthood and he is missing out. By his own admission, OP has tried to shove his money down his brother's family's throat for years offering a PS5, trip to Disney, paying off all their college, etc. It sure seems as if OP is trying to insert himself into his brother's life and family by showing up his brother using his money. If OP is serious about just wanting to pay for their college then he should have talked to his brother FIRST and offered just to donate that money into their college account like an anonymous donation. Most telling is when he said after the kids turn 18 he is just going to pay off their college anyway no matter what his brother says about it. It's like he is trying to buy his brother's kids.
