As one of the top community managers at WeWork, Ugo Mbawuike had a front-row seat to the rise and demise of the co-working tech unicorn that was supposed to transform the corporate office as we know it. From the love bombing of perks and community to the future faking of Adam’s grand vision and the gaslighting of the company’s subsequent financial problems, we look at Ugo’s experience through a narcissistic framework to recognize the red flags of an employer.

Narcissism in the workplace is such an important topic. One of the worst experiences I had in the workplace involved a fitness wear company in Emeryville, California, owned and operated by women that sold itself as a pro-woman company. I was one of many employees there that were verbally abused, scapegoated, and soon fired. But I was ready to quit anyway. The right hand woman of the owner cornered me and literally screamed at me in front of my coworkers. I was terrified. I am convinced that the owner was a malignant narcissist and the atmosphere there was very controlling and demeaning, with very low pay. As one employee said, they convince you to let your guard down(love bombing) then they attack you. Just toxic.

Me to. One manager at my work comes in and acts positive and I can't tell she's not happy she looks depressed. A lot of jobs I've been at have been bs. Sometimes it was me sometimes others and I used to do the charismatic thing but now I don't do it.

I never considered narcissism in the work place. Looking back, those work places and bosses affected me in a negative way. Very eye opening. Ugo is a wonderful guest. Dr. Ramani, thank you for addressing this. I always thought it was me not fitting in.

Ugo has such an incredibly beautiful soul!!! It's also very interesting to see work through a narcissistic lens and clarifying when looking back at some of the worst jobs I've ever had. It's been mentioned by many guests on this program that institutions can be narcissistic relations too and I was clear when hearing it from people who've left cults but this interview finally gave me insight on how it plays out in workplace environments. Thank you for that and I hope you'll explore more of this, as I absolutely share Dr. Ramani's concerns about our society being awash in narcissism, rewarding it constantly. I'd agree with both of you here, noting the lack of community (or unfamiliarity with it) in the US being a big part of this cultural problem too.

I'm thinking that if possible, it would be super interesting and very enlightening to hear from somebody who had worked in the bio-tech fraud scheme, Theranos. I heard about it years ago but now that Dr. Ramani has helped me see things like this through a narcissistic lens, I'm looking back on that story and seeing the cultish nature of that business, the enablers they were surrounded by and so much more.

My job is so bad I ended up 5150 and now of course management is trying to make things better. I'm over it. I just laugh when I hear another person quit. I just go to work and keep my head down from now on like most of my co workers are doing. I feel bad for a lot of them. The good thing is that I have some good co workers that I hang out with every once in a while where we go out and don't talk about work if we do it's all positive stuff. It's nice to be able to go out and not talk about the toxicity at work. My supervisor knows things need to change but she's been quiet also. Not much anyone can do though but the place has made me more toxic also and I never used to be this way so I've had to change my behavior. If theirs changed behavior then great but I don't think that company is going to change any time soon. And when you said once the aliens bring you in for dinner...yah no thank you lol

Just don't walk into the arms of a narcissists period. There is no other way. Wait until the idea come to a good genuine person. Narcissists aren't the only ones with ideas. Back the ordinary not the extraordinary

IMO - Unfortunately, people tend to flock to narcissists particularly in the business, and entertainment world. Those selfish individuals become the CEOs and celebrities. So, in our society it is extremely difficult to avoid them currently. Greed, flashy style, and outrageous behavior win the day particularly with the media.

If narcissists would lease their ideas to pragmatic ppl who are great at the day to day. A company would succeed. Bc narcissists could step aside and just be passive. Any business negotiation should require the narcissist to stand aside.

Sounds like the narcisst sees behaviour in the World or an idea that gleams like the sun and its good ,but its thought up by shy people , they take a collection that is gonna trend, but they are malecious intentionally. Like a black pillar with beautiful notes covering it rising .

I have been around the block enough to learn what my responsibility is when things go wrong at home, work and during my free time too. Like that one day while waking home from the laundromat with my shopping cart after my washing machine broke down after picking up a 5 dollar bill off the ground and then a half block later on the way home having to walk past a slum landlord who at the time was often in the news while he and 2 of his buddies were staring at me. While practicing fiscal responsibility by not buying a car right away. I can cope with that while having to go around the block. However what if I had to live in a workplace 24/7 and 365 days a week? I want to work in nursing homes helping people like that. However I have to get healthy first when it comes to things like manners during screen time there too. Instead of bringing a headache to work while expecting everyone else to cope with how irritable I am acting with one. I think I am there after 4 years recovery from a roll over car accident after going through a lot of other things too. Number one thing I will do there is to keep the details of my own trauma history to myself. Because well for one thing I refuse to get paid for being on a team being run like a family in which everyone there is expecting unconditional love from one another or worse - Where some sort of pie in the sky is being promised there too.

This was a great podcast, I had heard a lot about the innner workings of WeWork. Our company even rented space there for a while. "CIS white male"? Come on, stop labelling people with these silly designations. Everything you said was rational and totally made sense....until you found a "group", namely "CIS" male as you call them, and decided to start grouping people and making sweeping comments about them.. Now if that is not a personal blind spot, I don't knoiw what is.
