Each of the major Lakes except one has a name containing one of either: "mere" or "water" both indicate 'lake' in various languages: Old Norse/Cumbric or Old English/Anglo-French. (Only Lake Bassenthwaite has 'Lake' specifically in its name.) There is no reason to add 'lake' or 'water' or 'mere' to the actual names of any of them: So it isn't "LAKE Windermere" it's just Windermere; it isn't "LAKE Grasmere" it's just Grasmere and it isn't "LAKE Rydal Water" it's just Rydal Water. Similarly, there are no such places as Lake Buttermere, Buttermere Water, Lake Coniston, Lake Crummock Water, Lake Wastwater, etc.

It isn't "Grasmere Lake" or "Grasmere Water" or "Lake Grasmere" it's simply "Grasmere". Incidentally, Rydal Water used to be called "Routhmere" (which is translated to "The Lake on the Rothay") - The Rothay is the river that connects Grasmere & Rydal Water - You know: that little stream you saw off to your right as you walked from Rydal Water to Grasmere!)

If you get deep into Rydal Cave, (in the late afternoon when the sun has passed overhead and the direct sunlight is beyond the cave opening,) with a camera that can handle low light, the roof of the cave is such a myriad of colours, that you can't really appreciate in it's entirety with the naked eye, but if you photograph the roof above you, you'll be amazed when you look at the pictures later.
@DaveBartlett

I've always considered Rydal Water as the best lake for a paddle, Buttermere as the best lake for a swim, Ullswater as the best lake for canoeing, and Windermere as the best lake to spend the day on my motor cruiser, (should any wealthy and generous benefactor ever think of buying me one, that is!)

Surely your best route from White Cross Bay to Bowness-on-Windermere would have been to walk down through Troutbeck Bridge toward Windermere, turning right at the roundabout (where the road from Kirkstone Pass ends,) onto Rayrigg Road, and continue down to Fallbarrow Park and from there into Bowness Town/Bowness Bay. The advantage with that route is that it has pedestrian pavements for almost the whole route, and there are hardly any roads that you'll need to cross! (certainly not the busy A591.) ...Fallbarrow park is nowhere near 10-15 minute walking from Bowness-on-Windermere. From the Fallbarrow Park gates, if you'd have veered off from the main road and gone down the RIGHT hand side of the Rayrigg Road car park, it would have lead you downhill through lanes and back streets that would have seen you at Bowness pier in less than 5 minutes. ...Also, you could have got your bus back to Whitecross Bay much quicker: the 599 open top service now runs as far as Braithwaite Fold car park on Glebe Road, so you could have caught your bus back from there, (about 1/4 mile from The Marina Village!)

An example of selfish mooring on Commissioners Cut, as the second boat moored alongside yours, thus blocking the rest of the moorings. Norwich is a fine city, very interesting, lots of pubs! I remember that hot weather.
@twomenandaboat8681
@twomenandaboat8681 Ай бұрын
Hi Ratman, agreed, as mentioned in a previous comment, we did advise about their mooring blocking the cut. Unfortunately, we were not in a position to police this further. We found it interesting that a BA Ranger passed and also saw this without any further action. In our opinion, we don't think this was done deliberately to cause inconvenience to others, but you are right; not good Broads etiquette!

Thanks for your comment; sadly, we do not seem to have any control over the adverts that sometimes run before our videos start or even in the middle. Neither of us are very tech-savvy, so do not get why some videos have adverts and others don't. If it's any consolation, we often feel the same as you, especially when watching other KZfaq channels. Sometimes a 'skip' button appears whereby you can skip the adverts in question.

Hi Graham! Many thanks for your comment and kind words, we hope you have a cracking time in July (fingers crossed for some nice weather). We have been to Loddon on numerous occasions (but this was before we started making videos). We do have a couple of videos on our channel where we cruise up the Chet towards Loddon and moored at Pye's Mill for the evening. So please make sure you check out our: May 2023 Day 1 and Day 2 videos for some nice footage of cruising up The Chet. In the future, I'm sure we will get some footage of a nice walk that we like to do around Loddon. We agree, it's a lovely spot. Unfortunately, we few years ago, we didn't have a great experience when we moored at the Staithe (ourselves and another boat decided to leave the moorings early due to some anti-social behaviour), so now we do prefer to stay at Pye's Mill, which is a little further out and more peaceful. Take care!

Brundall Fen moorings…there’s a wooden walkway that leads through the fen up to a railway crossing. The path from there takes you up to Brundall High Street, coming out beside the church, not that far from The Ram pub (turn left). There are two Coop stores, one just beyond The Ram, the other in the opposite direction. There’s also a pizza takeaway not far from The Ram and a newish Indian restaurant just beyond the Coop that’s in the other direction. (Seems odd to have two Coops but I gather one is an East of England one, the other presumably a national one.) Also, you mentioned Langley Dyke. You can now moor there, but it’s managed by the landowner not the BA. I think (not been there, just read about it) it’s something like £10 for the first night and that you can book a mooring online in advance.

Thanks for letting us know exactly where the path at Church Fen leads, it's something that we were always curious about. It's also nice to know that it does lead up to The Ram, as we pass that pub on our way to pick the boat up. Sounds like it's also a nice place to moor up to stock up on a few bits. Take care

@twomenandaboat8681
@twomenandaboat8681 3 ай бұрын
Hi Alasdair, thanks for your comment. Unsurprisingly, we were anticipating a comment related to this, even before we posted this episode. As you can see, when we arrived back from our walk around Norwich, we were the only ones moored at Commissioner's Cut. At around dusk, a second boat moored opposite us, blocking the Cut, as you can see in the video. We did kindly advise them that they should moor further down the cut to avoid blocking the entrance (as per Broads etiquette). However, as you can understand, we have no control over what others decide to do. Surprisingly, if you look at the video at the 34:14 mark, you will actually see a BA Ranger passing, who saw this but didn't act. We felt rather uncomfortable ourselves with the whole situation, but there was little more that we could do, other than advise! However, in our personal opinion, we do not think this was a deliberate attempt by them to block the cut. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Never knew of the walk from Reedham to the Ferry Inn - normally have just taken the boat along! What different weather you had - at an Arthur Ransome Society event in Dundee on 6th May and it was fog bound all day. I took a party on a guided walk over the Tay Road Bridge to Fife and back and visibility was only around 50 metres at times.

Hi Alasdair, thanks for your comment. We only discovered the walk from Reedham to the Ferry Inn by chance! It's certainly a nice little walk but you're right, the weather did change dramatically when we got back. It must be quite an epic trek down from Scotland to The Broads! We've just come back from Edinburgh ourselves - which is a beautiful City. Take care and hope you enjoy the videos
