I do this doing laps at the dog park. Walk turning in a circle. Walk forwards for 15-20 yards, then turn right and walk sideways, turn right again and walk backwards, right again and walk sideways facing the other direction and back to the front. I then repeat turning left. Sometimes I mix it up. Was surprised to see how much of a workout this is for my legs and all I am doing is walking. 😊

600 vs 250 would require significant faster walking and massive extra weight. So not really comparable. 20% extra weight compared to body weight means extra 20% extra calories burned. Still a nice time optimisation

I have been wearing an ankle compression sock, topically applying naproxen gel and taking pain relievers religiously for YEARS (I have an os trigonum on left heel). I switched to barefoot shoes 2 years ago which helped tremendously with running, workouts and all over body issues. It recently occurred to me that what if I was walking wrong my entire life? As women we’re taught heel to toe for heels and to exaggerate spine movement- which may be fine for a dinner out dressed up, but not 24/7. About 2-3 weeks ago I found your videos which are the ONLY ones reflecting this mid foot strike approach over a heel strike. I spent about two hours practicing on a treadmill at first. My ankle has actually stopped swelling and needing constant pain relievers, and I barely have to pop anti inflammatory pain pills now! Also my QL muscles don’t lock up after runs or long walks which is definitely life changing. I can’t believe how something so simple can have such a profound quality of life difference. Don’t stop preaching about this!

So, I’m currently training to build muscle, I work overnight & I walk a few hours then sit a few more hours…will the walking reduce my gains? I’m eating almost 3000 calories a day or close to it😭😮‍💨

How fascinating! I was not aware of the problems athletes have or the effects of athletic shoes like that! I assumed (prejudicially, it seems), that "deforming footwear" was limited to women's fashion, where being hobbled is a kind of Veblen good (conspicuous waste, perhaps? Conspicuous leisure, definitely.) I truly though sneakers for athletes were designed for good foot mechanics!

I know you made mention of this in your video, but yes there is a difference between walking and running in humans. Humans walk with plantigrade locomotion - with the heel striking the ground ever so slightly first. Apes walk and move with the same mechanics. We are part of that family (great apes). The important thing is to not over emphasize the heel strike when walking barefoot, or with too long of a stride. Modern shoes allow us to lengthen stride and slam the heel down - not good. When running, forces are much higher and we leave the ground entirely. This cannot be absorbed by the heel directly and necessitates the form you are demonstrating. It takes 53% more energy to walk in the manner you are describing. The reason for that is if we land heel first slightly we can more effectively roll the foot toward the front which takes advantage of kinetic "spring" energy in our tendons resulting in additional efficiency. Running has higher forces so even with lower efficiency it is the best technique to absorb the shock with what you are showing. Even then, if you look at the ultra modern footware (which I am not a fan of), with enough cushion you see efficiency go up doing these massive heel strikes in marathon runners. Its pretty brutal but demonstrates the physics.

I am a runner. I tried to improve my running technique and discovered (through videos) That I have a hip impingement (which is evident on x-rays), but I could see the problem in my shoe ware. Some heel ware. I was landing on my heel. Then I saw it while running on a treadmill in front of a mirror. So I tried to correct it so I could run faster. I did and by marking the bottom of my shoes, I was able to track my improvement. I still have a hip impingement, but I walk and run correctly. Only improvement to my life that I noticed is that I don´t wear out my shoes so fast.

I've always walked on the outside of my foot and now, in my 70s, I have serious ankle problems because I tend to cockle outwards on my ankle when I walk on uneven ground. It throws my weight onto the outside of my ankle. Over the years the tendons have become damaged so that now I can't walk more than 15 minutes without experiencing ankle swelling and pain. Recently I started walking using my big toe and the whole of the ball of my foot and this has actually helped me to stop injuring my ankle but the damage is done. It may be, that walking on the outside of your foot is not for everybody.

The information you share in this video needs to go viral. This is no less serious than eating a proper diet over processed junk food. I live and work in the Philippines where many people have healthy feet from not wearing closed shoes like most wear in America. However, many people don't like the look of their toes open and spread out, preferring the look of closed toes like many in the west. 🫤

🎯 Key points for quick navigation: 00:20 *🦶 The traditional heel strike in modern walking may not align with our evolutionary past due to terrain and natural hazards.* 01:56 *🏃‍♂️ Modern heel-to-toe walking can lead to muscle imbalances and reduced joint mobility, affecting overall body movement.* 03:33 *🚶‍♂️ Heel striking disrupts forward momentum and can cause issues like Achilles tendon instability.* 05:57 *🦵 Walking with a heel strike doesn't optimize natural reflexes and can hinder balance and injury response.* 10:12 *🧠 Engaging proper walking techniques can optimize reflexes and evolutionary biomechanics for better mobility.* 11:06 *🦶 Utilizing the windlass mechanism by pointing the big toe enhances shock absorption and propulsion during walking.*

❤️👍 deep thanks for sharing your insight. I was athletic as a kid and LOVED running (in bare feet!!). Now I'm 51, overweight, get sore feet, etc etc. I have sketchers I wear most days. Sometimes I love their cushioning and other days it feels like it isn't helping, esp thru my posture. I've watched a couple of your videos and sure I'll be paying attention (to where my foot is landing) when walking. Have subscribed and hope to learn more. Much gratitude! 🙏

One of the worst fitness tool ever. I am a high level cali athlete, but i cant do any pull up with these beacuse those straps are literally cutting off the skin between my fingers, and the grip is unstable and unconfortable as hell. (No, my grip strenght is decent) so... Maybe its useable for some lighter weight and other gym stuff but overall i really dont recommened to anyone to buy. :(
