I've thought about building a similar design but with the HiVi B4N woofer for deeper bass. Low crossover point with this tweeter at the baffle step and with a baffle step of around 4db to put on stands. Thanks for this build! It's nice to hear the tweeter in action. The Tectonic tweeter is flat at about 79-80db on the Tectonic website response plot and yours looks like it's up around 84 or better though?

I rolled the Tectonic BMR off around 1500Hz which I think helped raise the sensitivity up a few db. The main issue is to watch your wattage to them. They're rated only to 20 watt peaks.

I apologize, but 86dB is not a "high sensitivity". That's a cleaning sponge but not a high sens driver -) You need to push 16W where a real high sens driver will be satisfied with 1W

Measurements are not 1 watt at 1 meter, just at 1 meter. I did not have the equipment to set 1 watt. Just trying to get the frequency curve better. The real sensitivity is probably higher because of my amp settings. A little volume equated to loud SPL's.

I know this is an older video,,but i had a question, after you finish the osb can you still feel the roughness of the grain.
@DonnieMulligan2 ай бұрын
Yes definitely. I did spray several coats of clear lacquer to help seal them but you can still feel the OSB texture. I did another pair for my brother. Sanded the OSB down to a 120 grit. Got a much smoother finish. I think if you sand them well and use several coats of polyurethane you can get them smoothed out pretty well. Mitered corners were tricky. They are very delicate and flakey until you glue them up. Good Luck!

@@DonnieMulligan thank you for the quick reply. Ever since I worked at home Depot in the lumber department, I've always liked to look of OSB, but never liked working with it because it did splinter and chip so much. Maybe I'll try a project with them in the future.

@@dakken74 With mitered corners you don't have to deal with showing the end grain. The corners look great with this material and nearly disappear. You could also use the underside of OSB, at least on my 4 x 4 sheets, it has a different texture. Smaller wood chip with dark brown bark like pieces mixed in. Gives a slightly different look.

A little follow up to answer some questions. I am using these in a 2.1 channel system with a small sub and they blend quite well. The Tectonic BMR tweeter is surprisingly good in this setup. The wide dispersion pattern and thin baffles makes these small books shelfs sound larger than they are. The only issue with the tweeter is its low sensitivity(80db) and power handling (10watts rms). I think this imbalance in sensitivity between the drivers(5db) is why I did not need a baffle step circuit in this design. Just be careful how much signal and wattage you send through this tweeter.
@OscarHernandez-ym4hxАй бұрын
Do you think 15 watt could damage BMR ?
@DonnieMulliganАй бұрын
@OscarHernandez-ym4hx It's max output is rated at 20 watts so it should be fine. If you cross it over high enough, like 1500Hz+, it should function like any other tweeter in its' price range.

I could only do an In-room response with R.E.W. since my test equipment is anchored to a desktop. Knowing that most in room measurements below 200Hz are problematic, I only did a few nearfield measurements at 12 inches from the top port. Pretty flat response from 42Hz-95Hz with nice roll offs on both ends. 95Hz was a little higher than the modeled 80Hz. I must be a little lean on cubic volume in the rear chamber.

@@DonnieMulligan As both vents are the same size, another way to accurately measure the response would be to close-mike each vent (less than 2cm) and just add the response in REW. As somebody that's been working in the audio industry for over 25 years (granted car audio industry). I'm very skeptical of this open baffle speaker setup. My skepticism was actually made greater by the fact that an "audio demo" was created to add to a KZfaq video, to listen to through whatever one is watching and listening to KZfaq on. I mean call me crazy, but even if I'm listening to this on the highest end headphones one could purchase it's still not going to pick up the nuance of a high-end audio system that someone played on and recorded, then converted and uploaded in the format of a KZfaq video, then played on whatever media device I was using. If I'm missing something, please let me know, I'm always willing to learn about something I haven't considered. I'm sure your speakers sound wonderful, and there's always great pride taken in designing and building something yourself. But we seem to be ignoring the degradation of audio quality from the playing recording, formatting, uploading, and streaming, and payback stream, process that goes on from your listening area, to my headphones. Like a whole lot of degradation. Unless I'm misinformed or have missed something.

You are 100% correct. One should not put a lot of focus or weight on youtube music demos(Any of them). Especially when dealing with open-baffle speakers where room interaction is a big part of the appeal. I just include the demos to give you a small taste of what they sound like in my space, nothing more. And for a $120 I got some decent results for my first attempt at open baffle speakers. As I stated in the video, they do need major EQ and a subwoofer. I have since tweaked them some more, but I think to take them to the next level will require an upgraded driver and a additional mid-bass woofer on the baffle. Maybe for another day.
