I like the idea of making it small and in pieces so it can be bolted together. On the small lathes no need for a giant diameter steady rest when the spindle bore is only 3/4" .

Hi RP, Very nice job on the mods you did there. Do you manufacture those handles with the steel balls and locking mechanism so i can order those? I just bought the same model 2550. If you do pls provide a link of your site? thank you!

I wonder if facing a workpiece that causes intermittent cutting such as this would benefit by facing from the center outward rather than that shown. That should minimize hammering on the cutting tool.

Jewelers working in platinum are instructed to (in the book I read) to avoid acetylene as a fuel, as it is too carbon-rich. Propane was approved.

Thank you for helping to easily solve my alignment issue. I have a Ring Fu RF30, same color as your Jet, and I’m not ready to try the stabilization solution. This is easy and might be all I ever need to do for my hobby needs. Something funny is that I have an Atlas 618 as well and my mill sits to the left of it too.

Best ADVICE DONT use a DRILLING DESIGNED MACHINE to be Used as a MILLING DESIGNED MACHINE !! VERY BAD Idea !! a Drill Press is NOT designed to use Lateral SIDE THRUST , its NOT Rigid enough , Bearing are NOT LARGE ENOUGH it Cannot HOLD an END mill RIGID enough and you will GET HURT !! Stay SAFE use your Brain and USE Machine Tools AS they are "DESIGNED" to be Used

Hey, that's good info. I'm right there with my setup. I mig everything. The torch is such a powerful tool for cutting metal and it saves so much time. This allows for projects to get done right and in time and to do this without spending 600yrs grinding shit. The biggest plus is accessibility without the draconian account requirements requiring 9000 dollars per fill up and remember acetylene is special, so don't lay it down because the honey-comb structure inside of the tank must stay upright or the acetylene will lift and separate, and you will die. This all happens before your wallet gets baptized to serve the penalty fees imposed by the unhooded corporate unwelder gods. Seriously though thats straight common cents in a land thats a bit challenging to say the least. I'm filling up tomorrow and getting correct tips which I didn't know until seeing your helpful post, thanks I appreciate it.

This is the first time someone with real sense used a drill press that didn’t have a Morse taper and used a press that would work. There are plenty of older machines out there to do this. It doesn’t take much to get these to work. You also need a machine that has a quill lock that tightens the quill directly like a craftsman 150 or an older Atlas. Great job and thanks for not wasting time on stupid stuff!!!

I think you're procedure is good except the use of the "hardstop" because there is no assurance that you won't bump the hardstop with enough force to move it a few thou and the indicator will still read zero. It would be better to just use the indicator zero without the hardstop.

This video answered a question I had about LP regulators. I bought a Victor Propane regulator with a CGA 510LP connector and I wasn't sure if it work with the OPD valves on the propane tanks. The regulator will arrive tomorrow, hopefully it will screw into my propane tank. Thanks for the video.

My pops was a welder/mechanic and I was just going through some of his stuff I inherited a few years back and noticed that this bernzomatic torch was labeled oxygen and.. PROPANE? I thought I guess if you add oxygen to any gas it’s gonna make it hotter right? So I had to look it up. Very cool thanks I remember his torch cart in the garage and just assumed it was always acetylene.

Good job, i have an old 1950s industrial Walker Turner that im going to do the same thing. The only problem is that the spindle is way too long. And it has about 3 thousand runout. It used to have 6 thousand runout untll i bent it back. whatever i decide to do it has to be reversible back to original. However, I do like your spindle mod. That is a weak point in many conversions .

I ended up putting this back together as a drill press and now has a new home. It made for easier setups than a lathe attachment, but yea, the long spindle, lack of tooling options, limited to very light cuts are all downsides. This was mainly an educational project, and for that, it was a big step forward for me.

This is the first video I've seen with this method and how I have verified the head on mine for years. I've looked at all other modifications that have been machined, bolted, and welded on, and there is still deflection with the final product/end result. Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation, use a dial indicator with a magnetic base... just verify your quill is true to the table.. the four bolts holding the column to the base can be shimmed.

This press has worked like a charm for my projects kzfaq.infoUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!
