Well, you could always procastinate identity stuff, "I am too busy, I transition later". 😅

That makes a lot sense. I focused a lot on my job for my identity.

When you have a problem like dysphoria where no satisfaction is seemingly available or even seemingly possible, you focus on other things or it can drive you crazy. Of course you have to distract yourself. Of course you have to pretend it will go away. Run, run, but it is always there. Facing it, finding your personal solution is the only way to peace. Or, you can keep distracting and feeling bad about yourself.

I told my therapist that the biggest place in my life where I felt belonging was in my job. When I changed jobs (settled down, got less ambition with a baby and family life) I had time to reflect on gender. Thank you for this great video!

It explains a lot ... That's why despite I having a lot of dysphoria, I'm quite stable let's say, because I had done my homework with all my others identity sides (well, about carrer I'm quite confused yet) I discovered myself after solving a carrer issue, maybe that mind breath for the first time in years made me perceived something really wrong about my gender. So in 2019 I had suffer an general identity crisys... All mainly because an shitty job, at least what triggered it. My dog died in December/2019, and after that everything became changing. I never really saw by this ample contextual angle

I can relate a lot to you! I experienced opportunity to explore my gender identity after I was forced to leave a job I hated. I also lost my family cat who got killed around this time and both these things gave me opportunity to explore myself and face head-on my dysphoria

@@its-natalieeee OMG so similar... I fell so sorry for your little cat... It's like that thing about coping right? When we lose something that helped us cope with the dysphoria and mainly when we lose something that was or old understanding of what was making us feeling so sick (and then perceiving that wasn't that). Can I ask you when did you discovered yourself as a transfolk? Me: 2020 on pandemics (14 of April - yes my new birthday lol).

Like me being a Metalhead and a writer from a early age fulfilled part of my identity, and definitely overshadowed everything else. Especially my being into metal music (ie being a metalhead.)

Oh my, career became very fulfilling for a period in my life. I made it to 58 years old before transitioning.

Yes, yes, yes! This helps me so much. When I got laid off and changed my career focus the gender dam broke. I am now in transition and am happier than ever. Another thing I find is your career can change, but your basic gender identity is pretty constant even though it may be repressed. As trans people we are bound to confront it one way or another sooner or later.

Dr Z -- I agree, it is important to fulfil your dysphoria needs and do something to correct this.

The analogy you used actually made me pretty sad. When I opened up that box of pizza it’s just crumbs and grease stains. Transitory sensory pleasures distracted/carried me through many decades, so at least admitting to myself I was trans let me have a peek inside my ‘life’ and face the reality, painful though it may be. As always Dr.Z you’re words of love and encouragement soothe the soul, thank you!😊 ❤

Exactly bang on. I also find it to be something of a barrier to transition, because of the risks to the successful parts of the identity. With gender being relevant to aspects of a second career I have been developing, it made the gender issues jump right up front. I wonder why I chose that second career ;)

Sounds very familiar, I feel called out. In my case it's not my job, but my creative endeavours. Performing, songwriting, etc. I pull most of my confidence from there. I am scared to start HRT, because that would definitely influence my voice, which is my most valued aspect. Music has always helped me deal with dysphoria.

As a musician, I identify with this. Any idea how you going to resolve it?
@IssyVoca
@IssyVoca Жыл бұрын
@@0532phillipjoy No definite plans yet. I'm working on the depressive part of my dysphoria, therapy helps in this regard. Building up my self worth is more difficult. Decluttering my life and surroundings is a good start. The more worth I can gain outside of music/creativity, the better I feel. I don't want to solely rely on it. Music should become something to enjoy, without being that necessity for survival. I feel most alive on stage and I want this to become more free and lighter, if that makes sense.

Explains why when health broke down, gender identity came to the fore.

For me it's the contrary... I have not yet confronted my dysphoria because of health issues that are always overshadowing and overriding my attempts at pursuing my true gender expression. I feel like tackling both issues would be too much to grasp, but doing nothing about it also makes me suffer...
