Great vid, I ski'd the Tuck, with a friend of mine, got to be more than 30 years ago, then did a couple of days hiking. I've done a lot of solo scrambling, all over, Rockies, Alps, just like this vid. The one thing I always wear when scambling, especially on any scree slope, is a pair of leather gloves, the gloves allow you to instinctivley correct a fall/slip with limited damage. It's rather alarming how quickly your body shuts down, when you do something to your hands, and you quickly loose blood. Just sayin.

Fantastic little video of the most amazing hike in the east after the Knife Edge on Katahdin. I grew up in NH and have hiked all over NE. Done at least 20 ascents of Huntington's Ravine; just a spectacular climb. Videography is solid. Thank you for sharing.

Great video. I did this last year and your video does a excellent job at showing the part above the slab, which most videos don't. Thank you for the footage, it is a wonderful hike if you have the right mindset for it.

Great video. Very genuine work. You should be proud of yourself to do that hike solo. Thanks for sharing. We were N.H. natives and spent a lot of time camping and light hiking in the Whites. I only attempted Mt. Washington once but started too late in the day to do the full hike. Always wanted to get back to it but can only enjoy other peoples' hikes on UT thanks to hikers like you!

ok, if you want to write a long story, you have to do it here and not on the comment section of those quickie video. so here is my boring story, but it's ok because I'm 75 and i like to ramble on. so in 1968 i was working at the Spalding Inn, a very nice expensive that had great food in Whitefield, New Hampshire. a friend from PA drove his old car up to visit. we drove his 1956 Chrysler which he named Clara Bell. (that was the name of something on the old old Howdy Doody show) and it was a great trip of this amazing mountain. middle of summer and it was a HOT summer but it was quite chilly at the top. so we drove the car down but it was dangerous because old cars didn't have disk brakes, but drum brakes and when they get hot, you have NO BRAKES. you have to pull over and just wait till they cool. Ok that is my first experience with Mt Washington. would love to go back. 7 years ago, i was cleaning the Veterans Administration and an older doctor said that her 95 year old father RAN up mt Washington, yes when he was 95!! he has just done it!!!!! Anyway, that is the story. thanks for being nice

Wow.. I did that one back on 2006 and it was for sure a challenge.. and slower going than most trails without a doubt.. that warning sign wasn't there but they did try and discourage decending via Huntington in the AMC guidebook. I've only gone down that way one time when I was in my early 20's and daring..weather was great at least I was smart enough to consult the summit weather desk.. and in my 40's smarter and only go up that route LoL. Down after via Tuck's like you did is a lot smarter.. glad you had a nice hike and moreso a safe one ! I can't say much cause' I do tend to hike alone b/c of liking to go midweeks days but having a hiking buddy is also a good idea esp on more challenging ones.
@AmandaDouin

Awesome! Good to hear your descent ended well and you made it down unscathed! I am trying to imagine how that would feel to climb in some of those sections with my body towards the rock, searching for the next good foot placement.. it seems like it would be a much longer going down than going up.. 😅 Thank you for your kind words!!

Mandah - Here’s a trick I used when I tramped in SoCal, and also AZ ( before moving to NH ) and is applicable in any hot region. I always had a green checked - Keffiyeh - head scarf. I’ve gone tramping in 120 degree heat, and felt fine, as long as I slowed my pace and kept it wet. Take the scarf and soak it either before or during the hike. Wrap it round your neck, and with the other end, drape it over your head and place your hat on top. As you move and or the wind blows, it will become quite cold. It’s why I tramped with a cotton tee-shirt in summer in the San Gab’ and Bernidinos in SoCal. My shirt would be heavy with sweat, but if you stopped for a break, took the pack off - the shirt would feel super cold within in a minute or so - enough so, that if it touched your back, I would gasp at the chill. This is a great heat “trick” - but obviously only applicable in hot climates. Care needs to be taken - an ex-tramping partner of mine, always made the tramp into an exercise, and I was always telling her to slow down in the heat. Long story short we ended up with her in the shade of a Bush, my Keffiyeh soaked in water and wrapped around her head and neck. It took 20mins for her to feel ok; she never made the mistake again. Go slow in heat…
@AmandaDouin
@AmandaDouin Күн бұрын
Thank you so much for the insight and instruction around technique, super appreciated!! 120 degrees heat, oh my goodness that is hot! I have researched materials and their moisture retention differences, and have heard that cotton can be a plus in heat I just haven’t tried it. Since the climate changes so drastically at the summits I’ll def try out at least the scarf trick! The cotton t shirt will be saved for when I’m hiking in the heat of the day somewhere in the dessert. Thanks again for the thoughtful response!! 💗💗💗

Nicely Done Congratulations Watching the video brought back many memories of having climbed Huntington's four times and by bad judgement went down once. Great Huntington Ravine hike, Nice you posted it. I remember coming to rocks the size of a small house at the beginning of the ravine and I remember that last bit of scrambling over that flat rock, you brought it all back. I did a solo Loop Hike back in the 1990's, up Huntington Ravine, crossed the Alpine Garden trail (some flowers blooming by the little stream, it was late May/early June or so.) down The Raymond path...I took a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey on the Raymond Path--lol...it was all downhill to my tent site. Fun Adventurous times... 5 STARS! --Van
