I find that some people with a strong desire to be in middle management tend to be controlling and manipulative (and yuck). This isn't so much the case for upper management though. I've been an engineer for almost 20 years and almost all of my managers have been, lets just say, not the type of people I'd sit and have a beer with.

I don't need the flex and happy to leave that to the blind ones. Management doesn't give you any power, more work and very little pay for the added stress. I don't want obligations for overtime, absences or staff that quit. I'm more than happy to remain a technical specialist.

Interviews can be a stressful aspect of job hunting due to their varied nature, with some being more traditional question-and-answer formats while others are situational or conversational. I recall experiencing an interview that focused on situational scenarios rather than technical questions, despite it being for a technical role. I dedicated a week to preparation for the interview, only to receive no response from the hiring manager and HR after the interview. This lack of feedback has left me wondering about what I might have done differently.

Wisdom is doing things with minimal work yet yielding greater results . So in my experience working it’s who you know and not really what you know . Even if I didn’t know anyone in a field I’m going for I would pare an associates degree with a certificate mostly so I can stay up to date with any changes in my field of interest combined with internships . Yes this may come with a little down side at first if you don’t know anyone but at some stage with experience you will climb to the top . With just a CDLs I was offered a job making one-thousand a year . This new generation doesn’t won’t to put the time in just throw money at the problem .

I am trying to break in to the I.T. field and I will be going to school, either for 2 year associates degree or a certification. I have minimal, lower level data center experience (mainly hardware related). Would Network Engineer be a good choice? I am not really good at math and the thought of writing code seems beyond me. Not to minimize Network whatsoever. Thanks for making these videos.

This is probably what I would say during an interview for this, or something similar to these concepts. I did this from memory, so hopefully the way it works in my head is the same as what you can Google. If the explanation seems short, it is because the question seemed self explanatory making it difficult to answer. Hope this helps! What is a VRF? A VRF or Virtual Routing and Forwarding is a concept similar to VLANs on a switch, but for a router. It allows a router to have multiple routing tables for traffic segmentation. This is mainly used for service providers in multi-tenant environments. It allows you to assign duplicate IP networks on the same router since the traffic is separate. A real world application of this is is for management traffic separation from your data traffic. It can also be used in a merger of companies who have an immediate need to join networks, but don't want duplicate IP conflicts in the environments. What is an Ether-Channel? An ether-channel or port-channel (the vendor neutral version of ether-channel) is a link aggregation technology that allows for multiple physical links to function as a single logical link. This can be used on layers 2 and 3 of the OSI model. It performs equal cost load balancing on the links which increases the bandwidth of data that can go across a link. It has three modes. For Cisco products they are: on, desirable, and auto. For non-Cisco products they are: on, active, and passive. What is HSRP? HSRP is a Cisco proprietary gateway redundancy protocol, that allows multiple gateways within the same subnet. This is made possible by both gateways sharing the same virtual IP that all hosts use as their gateway address. The behavior of HSRP is active-passive with one router being on standby in the event that the primary is down. In the event that the router goes down there is an ARP sent out by the secondary, which lets the hosts know where to route. Other alternatives to HSRP are VRRP which is not Cisco proprietary, and GLBP which is Cisco proprietary. Dynamic Route VS Static Route A static route is the simplest form of path selection outside of a directly connected route. It is a manual process that allows you advertise a route into your routing table. You would enter the subnet or host that you would want to reach along with the next hop. The downside of using static routes is that it isn't scalable and you would have to manually add each route for each hop, and would have to account for the return traffic as well. It is mainly used for a default route (usually to the internet) or explicitly sending traffic in a different direction without having to alter your routing processes. A dynamic route or dynamic routing protocol is an automated form of routing which uses databases to maintain a map of the network. This is achieved by routers joining a multicast group opting to be part of a route sharing process that constantly updates routing changes to neighbors. It is scalable and provides less administrative overhead. What is a VM? A VM is a virtual machine. Virtual machines are emulation of an operating system (as well as the hardware). They allow you to create multiple machines on a single piece of hardware and share resources. It has the benefit of properly managing resources along with being able to backup data more efficiently (and saving a machine state). In addition to the added cost benefit of not having to purchase more hardware. VMs are run on hypervisors which is the software that allows for the emulation of the OS. There are two types of hypervisors: Type 1 which runs directly on the hardware, and Type 2 which runs on top of an already running OS. What is IPSEC VPN? IPSEC or IP Security is a protocol used to create Virtual Private Network tunnels between endpoints. It is used to encapsulate and encrypt data in transit or just encrypts the payload. This tunnel is created using a number of methods such as: ISAKMP which initiates an IPSEC connection. IKE Phase 1 which securely exchanges the keys. IKE Phase 2 which uses the keys from the previous exchange to build the tunnel. Authentication can be set on the tunnels using either a Pre-Shared Key or using Digital Certificates (which is more secure). The main use case is to create secured traffic over the internet. It is an alternative to using a leased line due to it being more cost effective since direct internet access is much cheaper. What is vPC? In terms of Cisco networking a vPC is a virtual port-channel (not to be confused with Virtual Private Cloud). vPCs allow you to port-channel a downstream device (like a server or another switch), to two separate upstream devices. This is a feature on the NX-OS platform. Essentially, this tricks the downstream devices into thinking that it is connected via port-channel to the same upstream device. This feature provides redundancy to your distribution and core layers depending on the network architecture using peer links between the two upstream devices. The peer link uses a keep alive heartbeat to know whether a device in the pair is down. This peer link also shares MAC tables between them so that the cutover is seamless in the event of a peer going down. A similar feature on the Catalyst line is VSS, but the advantage of vPC is that there are two control planes involved in the architecture. What is load balancing? Load balancing is a method of distributing requests between multiple nodes with a single point of entry in a weighted or round robin manner. These nodes are clustered behind a load balancer and will handle each request allowing for the requested service to be queried as if there is one device. This isn't limited to just hardware devices, but can also be implemented in virtual environments to create high availability for applications. Layer 2 VS Layer 3 Switch A layer 2 switch is used to forward frames within a local network, while a layer 3 (or multi-layer) switch has the processing not only to forward frames but to also route packets. While a layer 3 switch cannot replace a router in terms of robust features, it can be used for basic routing via Switch Virtual Interface (SVI) and static routing. Catalyst VS Nexus Switches Catalyst switches are typically used for the access layer for client access to a network, so the main focus is for supporting end users. These switches are commonly found in a stacked configuration to support a high volume of users. Nexus switches are used in data centers which supports critical and high availability applications. Nexus switches are normally found in the distribution and core layers of a network and are made to handle extremely high volumes of traffic. Explain DORA DORA is the four step process that a DHCP client and server uses to facilitate the request and assignment of and IP address. The D stands of discover, O stands for offer, R is for request, A is for acknowledgement. Discover is initiated by the client which sends out a broadcast message to any listening DHCP server. Once the broadcast is received by the server, and offer is sent to the client device letting it know what available IP it is able to claim. If the offer is received by the client, it sends a request to the server. And finally once the server receives the request it sends and acknowledgement to the client that it has created a binding for it.

I always prefer to have DHCP on a server, it reduces the amount of documentation for IP address management (IPAM). The only time I have a device that does the routing perform assignments are usually if there is a branch environment that doesn't have a server and I need to do reservations for things like printers. I'm annoyed at work because the previous engineer moved away from using the server to go around our server team not giving him access (it wasn't like he made DHCP pools all the time). I've been working on Palo Alto for over a year now, and I'd say the weirdest thing that I've had to learn on it has been URL filtering and category filtering. The order of operations involved with how the firewall processes it annoys me. Other than that, I love the product and would definitely prefer it over Cisco's firewalls.

This is such a realistic view of getting a foundation before attempting to get into something. I think the oversaturation of influencers telling people to, "Do this in these simple steps and get a high paying tech job." is the reason for the market being the way that it is. You have people getting discouraged because they have some skills, but no concentration (or experience) in anything and still expecting to beat the competition. Kind of reminds me of the bike fall meme, but there is also someone putting another stick in the other wheel.
